I worked steadily and quickly. Then, the sounds stopped and it grew eerily quiet, except for the shouting of the warriors. A warrior ran in and said, "The rebels have retreated! We have retaken the base. Be prepared we are bringing in the injured!"

We sighed a collective sigh of relief. I continued working feeling grateful that we had not been blown to bits and that the base held up under the attack. What the hell did they want anyway?

Moments later, Ren came into the building and I was so relieved when I saw him. I ran straight to him and threw my arms around him.

"You're alive! I was so scared!" I shouted at him.

He grabbed me by the shoulders and looked me in the eyes with anger and said, "Why did you not follow my orders? You put yourself in danger. I could not live if something happened to you! You should be down in a bunker," he said with such passion. His words made me feel good that he did in fact really care about me. Perhaps he even loved me. I was about to kiss him when I said, "I know, I know. I am very sorry. But my place is here. I had to help. I could not go and hide when so many need my help and I have the skills."

He smiled at me and said, "I know. When I saw you running across the base in this flimsy dress I thought you were the most courageous female I had ever seen, or the dumbest."

We both laughed a little and then he kissed me deeply. Then out of nowhere, he collapsed. I was in complete shock and it was then that I noticed that the blood on his arm was his own.

"The General is down! Please help me get him up!" I shouted. Within seconds there were many around me picking him up and putting him on a bed. I quickly looked him over. I had to save him. I could not lose him. Not now that he was so close to being safe. I looked at his arm and realized that there was an artery that had been cut open. It was causing a substantial amount of blood loss, but it was not gushing out therefore it went unnoticed. But who knew for how long he had been bleeding from this. It could've been within minutes of him leaving my side in which case it would have been a big blood loss.

"I need blood! Get ready for a transfusion!" I said as I let the holographic projection examine his blood type and tell me the match. This had to work. This had to work. I could not lose him. I did not want to be alone on this planet without him. He meant everything to me now. I would save his life dammit.

  Chapter 12

  GENERAL RENDOR MOSCURN

I watched as the rebels retreated. "Finock! We must cover that hole in the fence now! Gather the builders and rig something for now. Something that would disable a speeder from coming through again!" I shouted. He nodded in agreement and was on his way to carry out my orders. I went inside the supply warehouse with a blaster in my hands aimed in the dark maze of supplies. There were many wounded inside from both sides.

"Rebels! Lay down your weapons and you will be given treatment for your injuries! You will be taken prisoner, but you will be an alive prisoner!" I shouted into the darkness. The sound of screeching became loud as blasters were slid across the floor at our feet. My guards picked them up and we began to secure the warehouse.

"Should we take the rebel injured into the reconstruction building?” I was asked.

"No, there are too many of them. We must keep them separated. Secure the mess hall and lay them on the tables. We will have a team there to attend to them. But make sure it is well guarded. I want at least thirty to forty warriors in there and I want all the rebels stripped searched for any devices or hidden weapons." He nodded at me and carried out my orders. I left the supply warehouse and made sure that there was a sound system in place for getting the injured off of the ground and to the place they needed to be. After I was sure that my plans were being carried out in a timely and clear manner, I ran over to the reconstruction building to see Lavender. I only hoped that Lavender had made it. As I jogged over there I searched the blue dirt to see if she was laying injured on the ground somewhere. I was thankful that I did not see her lying in a pool of her blood along the way. I would not be able to handle such a sight.

As I entered the reconstructionist building, the full amount of chaos hit me. There were so many injured and critically in danger. I immediately saw Lavender in her element. She was quickly attending to the injured with skill. She was right to have come here, though I would rather that she was safe underground. I ran over to her glad to put my hands on her once more. We rambled on together apologies and me giving a stern disappointment and her not following my orders. I was going to tell her that I loved her and that I wanted to be with her always when everything went black.

When I finally awoke I did not know how long it had been. I looked around to see that Lavender was asleep in a chair at my side.

"Lavender. Lavender…" I said louder. She woke up and smiled.

"Oh Ren! I am so glad you are awake! I was so worried," she said as she wrapped her arms around my neck and laid on my chest. Then she began to sob.

"It is all right," I said as I pushed my hand into her hair. I could tell that she was worried and exhausted and I wanted to give her some reassurance.

"I feel fine. I am going to be fine. How many hours was I out? What happened?"

"Hours? You have been out for two days. We were very worried that you were not going to make it. You lost a lot of blood. I am very angry with you. You had a slash to your artery in your arm and slowly leaked out a lot of blood over an hour or so throughout the battle. You could have died. How dare you do that to me!" she sobbed out the words. I was shocked that she said I was out for two days. The General in me quickly sat up and said, "Two days! There is much to be done! What of the fence? What about the injured?" I said suddenly feeling the pressure of my responsibilities.

"Lie down. It has all been taken care of. The fence has been repaired. The injured rebels have been mended and are imprisoned. Your orders were carried out clearly and systematically. You must rest."

I lied down feeling some relief. I looked at her and her soulful eyes and knew that she had repaired me. "Thank you. Thank you for reconstructing my body."

"You are welcome. I did not have a choice. You see I cannot live without you. Therefore I had to mend you."

"I am glad you feel that way. I love you. I am in love with you. I cannot live without you either. I apologize for all that I put you through. I was a foolish ass that thought I was doing the right thing. I come from a long lineage of Kalazaron and it has been my destiny to continue that. Yet here I was almost in death and I would have missed out on enjoying my time with you now for some far off future that may or may not happen. I do not want to live that way. I want to live in the now, with you. Do you accept my apology? Will you be with me? Will you be mine?"

I looked at her and she cried harder but she said nothing. Would she continue to deny me? She had said that she loved me, and I believed her. But that did not mean that she would agree to be with me, not after what I had put her through. Perhaps she thought that I should follow the Kalazaron way and couple with a Kalazaron female.

"Lavender? Say something," I said to her as I put my hand on her chin and lifted her face to mine.

"Yes. I accept your apology. I want to try this. I want to be with you in whichever way the Kalazaron allows us to be. Let's not live for the future, let us live for now. Any moment the rebels could return and steal away our last moments. Let those moments be moments of joy together."

I smiled at her in agreement. She leaned in and kissed me. I kissed her back. It was deep and passionate as though we were sealing a deal with a kiss. I was never happier than in that moment.

  Chapter 13

  DR. LAVENDER PROST

I was beyond happy when General Rendor Moscurn woke up. After we had completed the blood transfusion, it seemed that we might be too late. He remained unconscious and in a coma for two days. My heart broke. I could not live without him. I sat at his bedside and never moved. I held his hand in mine and whispered sweet nothings in his ear. I knew that he heard me because he would squeeze my hand every time I did it and it gave me ho
pe.

When he finally awoke he made me extremely happy, not just because he was alive and well but because he told me he loved me. I loved him too.

It had been a week since he woke up and the base was back to normal. The fence had been mended permanently and in new condition. New systems were put into place to patrol the fence so that explosives could not be planted ever again. Ren spent a lot of time questioning the rebel prisoners and getting lots of intel. He seemed to be very proud of it and seemed to help in making the base of Belvenreed a safer outpost.

"Let us go for a ride," he said to me one afternoon.

"So soon? Is it safe for us," I said to him.

"If you are going to live with me you must learn to indulge in a little danger now and then, he smirked.

I laughed and crawled into the speeder with him. Soon we were shooting across the grounds to a familiar place, the pond where we swam and made love that one night under the two full moons.

"What are we doing here? Going for a swim?" I asked him.

"Yes, of course. I have thought of nothing else since last time we were here. I would bring you here every day if I could." As he spoke I stripped my clothes off and ran into the water. He laughed and then joined me.

"I actually brought you here in celebration," he said to me.

"To celebrate what?" I asked him.

"I have asked the Master for his blessing and permission to be with you. To actually be with you as a couple, and he has agreed. He is very impressed with your work here. He thinks you being the partner of the General can only make it a stronger base."

"Really?! Is this true?" I shouted in joy.

"It is true. My love is official for you. We will be recognized as a couple just as I would be with a Kalazaron female."

"That is great news!" I said as I jumped on him and kissed him. That kiss turned into a deeper and more intense kiss. Then we made love in the water just as we had done before. It was a perfect way to begin our new life together as a real team on the base and in the bedroom.

Months later, he held true to his word. I was no longer fearful that this alien Kalazaron warrior General was going to break my heart by some mean trick. Now I knew that it had all been due to his torment on the inside of what he was supposed to be doing and what he wanted to do. I could understand that. Now, as a Kalazaron Captive, I was the happiest woman I had ever been. It was very strange, but I did not feel like a slave. I was merely referring the capturing of my defiant heart by a Kalazaron. He truly was my equal and I spent a lot of time with him working on our reconstructionists breakthroughs. We even visited the city of Konthos off and on and I gradually felt more and more like a Kalazaron.

I hoped that one day I would be able to see earth again, but until that day came I was very happy to be with General Rendor Moscurn, or as I called him, Ren.

  Chapter 1

  SILVER BROOKS

  It was now or never!

“You can do this, Silver. You can leave this godforsaken rock and go to Earth, just as you always dreamed. Just crawl along the floor quietly, and by all means, don’t get caught,” I whispered to myself as I stared at my reflection in the shiny, stainless steel wall. I was on all fours, trying to crawl to freedom, or so I thought at the time; how could I have known what would really happen?

I studied my reflection, trying to talk courage into myself. I looked as I always did, with my red hair in knots around my face. Everyone had knotted hair because of the necessary water rationing and lack of proper soaps like they had on Earth—or so I heard.

Dirt: that seemed to be everywhere in this place. It was on my face and arms that looked like ash and soot. My green eyes pierced through the dirt on my pale skin that was speckled with freckles. My brown pants and sweater were made of wool and they were hand me downs, with patches sewn here and there. This was the standard look that everyone on this mining planet wore. I only hoped that it was good for space travel. I supposed it would have to do.

I peeked around the corner inside the launch room and waited until the crewmen had their backs turned to me. As soon as they did, I scurried quietly on all fours, hiding behind various boxes and items as I made my way to the cargo ship from Earth. This particular ship came every three years on a regular cycle. It was a bride ship that brought women from Earth to be wives to the miners that were stationed here. This is how my mother had made it to this planet over twenty years ago, and how I had planned to leave, or escape.

The ship had been here for a month after bringing twenty new brides and eight new miners. Now it was scheduled to leave for Earth in less than two hours with a large load of silver. My plan was to get on the ship and hide until it was too late for the ship to turn around and bring me back to the mining planet. They would have no choice but to take me to Earth. I would prefer to hide the entire time on the ship, but unless I could find a good hiding spot with food, water, and a toilet, I would have to come out eventually. For now, I was taking it one step at a time and I just needed to get on the ship and hide.

“What was that?” a male voice said. I froze at his words. I was well hidden behind a large table, but I thought I had been caught.

“That was the new weighing scale. It makes that noise after calculating the load,” the other man said. I sighed in relief and picked up my head slowly to see that the men were focused on the preparations for loading the silver as they continued to talk.

“This entire ship has been overhauled with new equipment. We had some trouble with it on the way here and the auto pilot veered off course a bit, but we corrected it in time.”

I continued crawling toward the cargo bay door that was opened, laying like a long ramp. They continued to talk about the mechanics and such as I slowly stood up and walked quietly up the ramp and into the ship. Once I was in, I still had to be cautious as I didn’t know who was on the ship already.

I quietly crossed the vast, cavernous space of the cargo bay and into the main quarters of the ship. I soon found a large closet to hide in and remained there, very nervous and very quiet. I didn’t let myself relax an ounce until I felt the engines of the ship come alive. Then the sensation of flying hit me, or at least that’s what I assumed it was. I had never felt anything like it before. I had always been on the ground.

I was born on the silver mining planet Merton Loy, one of many desolate and barren planets that Earth mined. This particular planet had large amounts of silver, and since it was this element that brought my parents together, they thought it was a good name for their one and only daughter: me. Growing up on the barren rock called Merton Loy, I always longed for escape, but as they say, be careful what you wish for.

I had desired to see and live on Earth as soon as I first heard about it when I was a child. This is when the first bride ship came in and then took the silver loads. That was when my mother first told me about where the ship came from. She told me about her time living on Earth and what it was like for her. She told me that her adventurous spirit made her want to see space and experience a different place. She was very happy living on this barren rock of Merton Loy as she saw it as different and unusual. For me, it was all that I had ever known and I longed to see Earth. I guess I inherited my adventurous spirit from my mother and father, as that is what brought them here in the first place. Now, they both had passed away and I was left on my own on Merton Loy.

Then it happened. The local government mandated me to marry. I did not want to. They said I could choose any miner that I wanted, but I had to do it within twelve months. That’s when I planned this escape. I could not marry someone that I did not love and I had not met any miner that I loved. Some of them were good friends and nice, but love it was not. I did not want to give in to a loveless marriage for the sake of keeping the miners happy. I wanted to see Earth. I wanted to experience space. I wanted so much
more. I soon fell asleep thinking about these thoughts as I crouched down on the floor in the closet.

When I awoke, I didn’t know if I had allowed enough time to make it impossible for the ship to turn around, but I was very thirsty and hungry. I quietly opened the door and looked around. No one was in the area. I made my way to the wall and looked out a small, round window; the blackness of space surrounded us. It was beautiful. After nearly bringing myself to tears, I finally pulled myself from the view and began to tiptoe around the ship.

I had never been on a ship before, so the layout was foreign to me. I walked down a long corridor not seeing anyone, and by luck, I peeked into the glass area of a door and saw the kitchen. I quietly entered and looked around. I wondered if it was sleeping hours on the ship because there was no sign that the kitchen had been used recently. I carefully drank water and ate a dehydrated meal of rice and vegetables. Then I thought, maybe I could stay hidden a while longer. I could take food and water with me right now. But first, I had to find the toilet. I walked out of the kitchen and down the hall, but all the doors were shut, and there were no glass windows like the kitchen had. This would be hard to find.
