He gripped a handful of my hair, jerking my head back. “And how is he going to find out?”
“Because I’m an FBI agent cocksucker. Enjoy being ass raped when you go to prison. You’re going to have the whole bureau coming down on your head.”
He froze and I could just imagine the look on his face, but I used that moment of shock to act. As hard as I could, I reared my head back and hit him in the nose, the sound of it cracking making me cringe. I rolled to the side and away from him. Blood poured from his nose and his eyes were on fire as he got to his feet, stalking toward me.
I kept rolling away until a voice screamed my name from below. I gasped, thinking I had to have imagined it, but Blaine reacted to it as well. He was there. Jason was actually there.
“Aylee!”
“Jason!” I screamed back, desperate for him to hear me. “Jason, hurry!” His footsteps thundered up the stairs and he wasn’t alone. Blaine grabbed the knife off of the floor and charged toward me. “Jason, please!”
The door burst open just as Blaine ripped me off the floor and put the knife to my throat. Tears streamed down my cheeks when I finally got to see Jason, his gun drawn and pointing right at Blaine’s head. The second he got a good look at me, his eyes blazed.
“You found me,” I whispered, the knife cutting my skin as I spoke.
“I’ll always find you,” he promised, turning his murderous glare to Blaine. “Let her go,” he commanded.
Blaine chuckled and gripped me tighter. “Drop your gun and I will.”
What I thought would end up being a stand-off turned out to be the opposite. Without hesitation, Jason pulled the trigger and everything moved in fast forward. Blaine’s hold on my hair loosened and he fell to the floor, the knife grazing across my neck. My ears rang from the shot and I stood there stunned into silence as I looked down at Blaine’s still form, his head split open, gushing blood. More officers stormed into the room, and Jason picked me up in his protective arms, shielding me from view.
Ryan draped a blanket over me and Jason rushed me out of the room, the chief hot on his heels. “Blackwell’s still alive, but barely. An ambulance should be here soon.”
“Oh my God, Georgia,” I called out. Jason stopped and they both looked at me. “She’s dead. Blaine killed her. She was a part of this whole thing.”
Ryan’s mouth gaped open. “You can’t be serious?”
“She’s in the basement.” Ryan nodded and took off toward the basement, commanding some of the other officers to join him. “Please get me out of here,” I begged, clutching Jason’s shirt. He rushed me outside and the driveway was packed with police cars. The ambulances pulled in and he carried me toward them.
“You’re okay,” he whispered, holding me tight. “Thank fucking God you’re going to be okay.”
“Don’t let me go,” I cried. “Whatever you do, don’t ever let me go.”
“I don’t plan on it.”
I woke up to bright lights and the sound of beeping machines. Jason held my hand, but his head was down, breathing slow and deep. I didn’t want to wake him so I laid back and watched him. “I’m alive because of you,” I whispered, not thinking he could hear me.
He squeezed my hand and his head lifted, green eyes weary. “I was almost too late.”
A tear fell down my cheek. “But you weren’t. Did I pass out in the ambulance?”
He nodded. “You’ve been out for a few hours. You were dehydrated with a lump on your head the size of mine. Luckily, the two by four didn’t break my skull. I guess we both have hard heads.” Pausing, he released a heavy sigh, his body tense. “They ran some other tests as well to see if you were . . . violated.”
“I wasn’t,” I claimed truthfully. I was pretty sure I’d have known if I was. “I thought he was going to, but I wasn’t going to go down without a fight.”
“I know, but it scared the fuck out of me when they told me they were going to check for it. I didn’t want to imagine you going through that. From the looks of you, I just knew that fucker had raped you. His death should’ve been painful, but I couldn’t gamble with your life.”
A tear rolled down my cheek. “I thought I was never going to see you again.”
“So did he,” Ryan said, entering the room with a sad smile. “He was a crazed man once he awoke in the hospital. Couldn’t blame him though. I’d have been the same way if it was my wife.” Jason’s jaw clenched, his gaze focused on our entwined hands.
“I’m assuming you want my story?” I asked.
Nodding, he sat down in the chair to my other side. “Is it too soon, or do you need more time?”
“No, I can do this, but first, what’s the status on Drake? Is he alive?”
“For now. Don’t know how he’ll be when he finds out what happened. Out of all the people it could’ve been, I never thought it’d be his son.”
“And his wife,” I added. “She was the one who used the knife on the others. She was jealous of Drake sleeping with them. That’s when she started messing around with Blaine, who only ever wanted his dad’s position and power. Apparently, they came up with the whole blackmail scheme together. After the first murder, they thought it would be pinned on Drake, but it never happened. That’s why they continued to kill, in hopes it would lead to him.”
“And I bet Drake paid off the media to keep suspicion away from him. It would clearly ruin his image.”
I nodded. “I guess you can’t blame the guy considering he was innocent, but it still doesn’t change the fact that he could buy people’s silence. If he was actually the killer, he could’ve easily gotten away with murder.”
“Why do you think I got you two involved?” Ryan countered.
“Because we’re the best,” I said, hoping to brighten Jason up. I winked at him and he smirked.
“Is there anything else?”
I shook my head. “I think that’s it. I’m just glad it’s over. My only regret is that we couldn’t save any of the other girls.”
Ryan stood and walked around to Jason, placing his hand on his shoulder. “You did good, son, both of you,” he added, meeting my gaze. “Once everything’s settled, I’m sure you’ll be heading back home, correct?”
“I guess so,” Jason replied. “I have some people I want to say goodbye to and I’m sure Aylee does as well.” I did, but the thought of telling everyone goodbye made my chest ache.
Ryan held out his hand and Jason shook it. “Just make sure to stop by and see me before you go. I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate everything you’ve both done.”
“Thanks, chief. I think we’re going to need a vacation after this.”
“That’s an understatement,” I added with a laugh.
Ryan smiled at us both and backed away toward the door, leaving Jason and I alone. We stared at each other for the longest time, his fingers tracing softly up my arm and back down to my hand. Lifting my hand to his cheek, he closed his eyes. “I love you, Aylee. I was so afraid I’d never be able to say it to you ever again.” When he opened his eyes, a tear slid down his cheek. It was my undoing.
“I love you too. But there’s one thing I need to know.”
“Anything,” he murmured.
“How were you able to find me?”
Rubbing the back of his neck, a sheepish grin spread across his face. “Let’s just say it all started the night I snuck into your room.”
One Week Later
“He hasn’t said a word about you two staying together or making things work?” Diane asked incredulously.
I scooped a huge bite of her famous broccoli and cheese quiche into my mouth and rolled my eyes. “Nope, and tomorrow’s our last night in Vegas.”
“Why don’t you ask him then? You both love each other, so why not?”
“You know why I don’t.”
She snorted. “You don’t want to look needy. I swear, for a girl who runs head first into danger you sure do cower at the thought of love. Makes no sense.”
I sighed. “I just don’t want to hear him say he can’t do it, that it’d be too hard.”
“Do you think it will?”
“I know it won’t be easy living that far away from each other, but I’m willing to try.”
“That’s the first step, sweetheart. I’m sure he’s thought about all of this and is just waiting for the right time. You still have until tomorrow night. Just be patient.”
“The right time would’ve been days ago. He’s already booked his flight home.”
“Have you?”
I looked down at my food and sighed. “Not yet. I told him I did, but I kept hoping something would change. With him scheduling his flight it’s obvious he’s going home no matter what.”
“Where is he? I’m surprised you aren’t with him.”
“He’s saying goodbye to his fighter friends at the gym. We’ve been so busy this week at the station, we haven’t had time to see everyone. But I had to make sure I saw you before I left.”
Her eyes misted over and she smiled. “I appreciate that. Veronica wanted me to give you this,” she said, pulling out a long, black box from her purse. “It’s her way of saying thank you.”
I opened it up and gasped. Inside sat a beautiful diamond and sapphire bracelet. “Wow. I can’t even imagine how much this cost.”
She waved her hand dismissively. “Don’t worry about that. She can afford it now that her girls and boys are back to work. She even told me to tell you that if you ever needed any of the gentlemen services, you have a membership for life.”
Snickering, I pulled the bracelet out and clasped it around my wrist. “That’s an amazing offer. I wonder what Jason would say if I told him?”
“I’m sure he’d get pretty angry, but it might also light a fire under his ass. I’d give it a try,” she mentioned, smiling slyly.
I winked. “I think I will.”
“Before you go, we need to walk down to my shop. I have some things I want to give you.”
“Diane, you’ve already given me too much. I can’t possibly accept anymore.”
Gaze firm, she pursed her lips. “Do you remember what I told you the last time you were attempting to be difficult?”
I burst out in laughter. “Okay, fine, I’ll stop being a pain.”
When we got to her shop, she strolled right over to two large boxes sitting on the counter. “I had these flown in from New York.” She pulled out some clothes from inside and held them up. “I thought you could use them in Maine. These are from my winter line.” There were jackets, pants, long-sleeve blouses, and even a pair of winter boots with wool inside.
“I don’t know what to say,” I cried.
She packed the clothes back into the boxes and sealed them up. “You can say thank you and that you’ll call me every week. That should suffice as payment.”
Opening my arms, I wrapped them around her and squeezed. “Thank you for everything. I’m really going to miss you. But I promise to call every week.”
“Good. And then maybe sometime soon, when you’re not working, we can have a girls’ weekend somewhere.”
I pulled back and smiled. “I’d like that.”
Grabbing a pen and notepad from the desk, she handed it to me. “Write down your address so I can ship these boxes to you. I don’t want you having to worry about getting it all home.”
I wrote the address to the B&B and gave the notepad back to her. “Thanks. That’ll help out a lot.”
Knowing my time was drawing near, she hugged me again. “I’m going to miss you, Aylee.”
“I’ll miss you too. Okay . . . now I need to finish packing and spend what little time I have left with Jason.”
She wiped away her tears and smiled. “I know. Good luck with everything and be safe on your way home.”
I started for the door and waved. “I will. Talk to you soon.”
“You better.”
The Vegas heat hit me as soon as I opened the door. I wasn’t going to miss that at all, but if I had to deal with the heat to be with Jason, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Now all I needed to find out was if he felt the same. Love could only get you so far.
Instead of going back to the hotel straight away, I spent the last couple of hours taking pictures of the strip. I’d been around for weeks and hadn’t taken a single one. I didn’t even have one of me and Jason. My phone going dead was my cue to call it quits. It was only about a mile walk back to the hotel and I needed the time to myself to think. The ache in my chest grew worse knowing I only had one more day to be with him. And it hurt even more that he hadn’t said a word about us continuing our relationship.
When I opened the door to our room, my eyes went wide in shock. “Oh my God,” I breathed. The lingering sun shone through the tall glass windows, shining on a table set up with candles and two covered dishes. Jason stood by the window with a gin and tonic in his hand, gazing out at the city. “Jason this is beautiful.”
He turned his green gaze my way, his lips tilting up in a smirk. “I thought we could spend this night alone, just you and me.”
Throwing my purse on the counter, I strolled into his outstretched arms. He held me tight and I breathed him in. “I think it’s a great idea. Did you have fun with Tyler and Kyle?”
Kissing the top of my head, he let me go and helped me into my seat at the table. “I did. They asked about you. I told them you were doing much better.”
“I wish I could’ve said goodbye, but I needed to see Diane.” He sat down across from me and lifted the tops of our food. We both had Oscar-style filet mignon with mashed potatoes and asparagus. It smelled like heaven.
“I understand. Was she sad?”
My eyes burned. “A little, but I promised we’d talk every week. She’s shipping me a ton of winter clothes up to Maine.”
“That’s nice of her. Did she give you that bracelet too?” he asked, his gaze focusing on the glittering diamond bracelet.
I shook my head. “Ronnie, actually. It’s a thank you present.” I wanted to tell him about the other thing she offered, but I didn’t want to spoil the mood.
“She sent me something too,” he added, holding up his wrist. He had on a brand new watch that had to cost thousands.
I cleared my throat. “She didn’t happen to offer you anything else did she?”
His brows furrowed. “No, why?”
He was speaking the truth so I didn’t even bother elaborating. “No reason, I was just asking.” I took a few bites of my food and looked out the window. The light show was always so beautiful at night; it was the perfect backdrop for dinner.
“I thought you would’ve been back earlier. What all did you and Diane do today?”
“We ate lunch at her restaurant and then we went back to her shop. For the past couple of hours, I walked down the strip and took pictures. Then I realized I don’t have any of us. We need to take some together before we leave.” A sly smile spread across his lips. “Why do you look like that?”
He shrugged. “No reason. We can take as many pictures as you want.” We finished eating and then he waltzed up to the stereo, turning on the music. It was a slow, sensual beat with no lyrics. He held his hand out and bowed his head. “Will you dance with me?”
“Of course,” I agreed, taking his hand. He twirled me around and put one arm around my waist and clasped his other hand with mine. We swayed to the music, keeping our eyes only on each other. “Will you miss Vegas?”
Smiling, he bit his lip. “I’ll miss playing poker. But, at least now I have enough money to buy the land I want. I love living in the city, but I’ve always wanted land to build a cabin. The North Carolina mountains are amazing.”
“I bet they’re beautiful.”
As soon as the song ended, Jason fetched his phone. “Smile, firecracker.” He held me close and took a couple of pictures with us together. I then held up mine so I could have my own.
“Thanks. I just wanted to have some memories to take back with me to Maine.”
His hands splayed across my back and he leaned in to kiss me. “And I’m hoping to give you plenty more tonight.”
My body melted against his as he held me tight, tasting me, touching me. I opened myself up to him and let him take control. I yearned to hear him say that we’d be together, but I had a feeling it wasn’t going to happen. A tear slid down my cheek, but Jason didn’t seem to notice.
He hoisted me in his arms and carried me to the bedroom, lying me gently on the bed. There were lit candles around the room and it only added fuel to the heartache. “I want to make love to you, Aylee,” he murmured in my ear.
“Yes,” I breathed, swiping the tears from my eyes. He lifted his head to stare down at me, but the tears were gone. I didn’t want him to see the evidence of my pain.
The next thing I knew, I was naked on the bed with him on top, kissing me deeply. His lips trailed down my neck to my breasts where he closed his lips around me, sucking greedily. He pulled my nipple between his teeth and I arched off the bed, groaning in pleasure.
“I love hearing you scream for me,” he growled, sliding his fingers inside. I gasped and rocked my hips against his hand. “Fuck, I love how wet you are.” Pulling his fingers out, he stuck them in his mouth and groaned. Pressing his cock against my opening, he teased me.
I wrapped my legs around his waist and tried to take him myself, but he chuckled, circling his hips to tease me more. “Please,” I begged, “I need to feel you inside me.”
Smile fading, his hands came up to my face and held me in place so I had no choice but to look at him. Then, I cried out as he slammed into me in one hard thrust. He moved slowly at first, my breaths coming out in rapid pants. My whole body trembled under his touch and I wanted more. Our bodies moved together perfectly as if we were always meant to be together. It all felt right, but yet seemed so difficult.
Rocking his hips against mine, that delicious ache between my legs grew stronger and stronger. My body clenched around him so hard I could feel him pulsate inside me. “Jason,” I cried out, digging my nails in his back. He picked up his pace, grunting as our bodies slapped together. Everything inside me exploded as he kept going, until I felt him release his warmth deep within.
