"Take the sleeping bag; you deserve some comfort," she said and helped Jakobe out of the truck and onto the ground. She moved the first aid kit off the sleeping bag and put it in the four-wheeler, so he could put his head down.
Jakobe poked Sedi, who stirred but didn't open his eyes. "What?" Sedi whispered.
"Keep eyes on her," Jakobe said and let his head fall flat against the sleeping bag.

He squinted as the first light flashed across his face and he opened his eyes. Jakobe sat up straight, letting out a loud yawn. He blinked away his sleep until his vision cleared and twisted his back until it cracked. Jakobe couldn't remember the last time he felt so refreshed. He put his hands down on the other side of his body and went to twist his back the other way when he felt a damp piece of metal. He pulled his hand away and saw blood on his fingertips.
Buried in the ankle-high grass was a thin strip of metal with a blinking red light on it. Its body was covered in a thin layer of blood. The trail of blood went to where the four-wheeler was parked the night before. Jakobe shook Sedi until he woke up.
"You missed your watch last night," he said, still looking at the empty patch of grass.
"Oh shit, sorry about that. At least she didn't stab either of us in our sleep," he joked and stretched as he sat up. When he turned to look at Jakobe, his jaw slackened. "Did she—"
"Yup."
"And we're?"
"Yup."
"Shit."
"Shit."
