  Arthur felt pride as his group sprang into action. They didn’t miss a beat, and he watched Samson run full speed into the group of goblins at the front. It was frightening to watch because as soon as he hit the two in the front, for lack of a better description, they exploded. Limbs went flying as if they were hit by a steel battering ram. That new armor was paying dividends already. Samson quickly resorted to slashing with his sword and bashing with his shield. Arthur took aim, activated Aim Shot, and hit one of the goblins in the eye, and it fell dead. He decided to ignore experience gains and could look them over later.

  Arthur decided now would be an excellent time to work on his dual wield fighting style. His bow fell to the ground, and he pulled out his sword and dagger. The sword stayed in his right hand, and he turned the dagger around, so it was facing downward in his left hand. That would be used for backhanded stabs and quick parries.

  He took off in a sprint toward the fight and saw five of the goblins peeling off toward the girls. Samson had managed to kill or maim the others but was facing both of the orcs, toe to toe.

  Arthur took off toward the group rushing the girls. Vana took one down quickly with an arrow, and Allendria dropped one with a lance of fire straight into its heart. Arthur came in with a hard overhand blow on the goblin at the edge, and the creature never saw him coming. The blade went straight through its head, and blood fountained up and out.

  Arthur quickly stepped around the dead goblin and drove the dagger in his off-hand directly into the next goblin’s rib cage. It squealed, and Arthur ripped the blade backward and out of the back of its ribs. The creature dropped, unmoving.

  Arthur turned to face the last one and saw it coming with an overhand blow of its own that was aimed right for his shoulder. Before the blade landed, an arrow and a lance of fire both slammed into its side at the same time, sending it to the ground unmoving. Arthur looked over and gave the girls a grateful glance.

  He took off toward Samson and saw the man holding his own against the orcs, but he couldn’t seem to land a solid hit on them. Arthur came in from the side and once again stabbed one of them with a dagger in the ribs. Arthur didn’t even see the backhand that followed and sent him stumbling.

  The orc had turned to strike at him when it was stunned, and it got an arrow in the chest for its trouble. Instead of falling, as Arthur expected, the beast roared and seemed to grow in size and muscle for a moment.

  Its eyes took on a reddish hue, and it swung at Arthur with fury. He had enough time to recover a little from the daze, so he stepped to the side and used his dagger to push the blade farther off balance. His sword came down and landed a grave blow to the Orc’s left leg.

  The skills were helpful and all, but he didn’t have time to deal with it. Arthur jumped backward as the orc swung its axe at him, and it received another arrow for its effort. The bolt went into its neck and was quickly followed by a lance of fire that burned into its face. The Orc fell and stopped moving.

  Arthur didn’t have time to wait and dashed for the last Orc that Samson was still holding off. Samson saw him coming directly behind the Orc, nodded to him, and then leaped backward. Arthur came in behind the orc and plunged the dagger and the sword directly through the Orc’s back. The sword punched all the way through and out of its chest. It slumped to the floor as blood started to leak from its mouth.

  Arthur did a quick check and saw everything was dead. Samson had been a nightmare on the field when it came to holding steady. He was sure there wasn’t anything that man couldn’t go toe to toe with. Arthur saw the last of the alerts roll in.

  That fight was a complete surprise, but it had worked out well. The group was rather impressive. Samson was earning every bit of that armor Arthur had thrown at him. He looked, and the man was still at 90% health even after all of that fighting and holding them both solo. He only had a few scrapes on him that were shallow and didn’t require attention.

  Arthur had only lost a bit of health from that one backhand, but it would return quickly as they traveled. He hadn’t noticed it at first, but he saw another small icon flashing as well. The image appeared as a curled up dragon in the corner of his vision. Pressing it showed him something that surprised him.

  That was good news. Arthur forgot Balair was able to level up. He talked to Vana and Allendria as they scoured the battlefield for useful items and the goblin’s and orc’s few serviceable pieces of armor and weapons to load on the cart. They told him Balair had swooped down and clawed at one of the orcs to distract it from Samson a couple of times, and the little dragon had also got its teeth into the skull of a goblin that Samson had as well. Arthur felt good knowing the little guy was useful.

  They made their way back and on the trip spooked up a pack of boar. Arthur was able to take down two while Vana managed to knock down three. Allendria even got off a shot of fire and took down one. All in all, it was a rather productive trip.

  He even got lucky and one of the Boar furs was bumped up to good quality. Once they had finished, they loaded the carcasses onto the cart, and he and Allendria took them out to get rid of them. Arthur let Allendria do the honors of burning the corpses, and they made their way back to the inn.

  They loaded up all the ore and took it over to Rowan. He was impressed with what they had found, and they quickly stashed the copper and silver away.

  Allendria and Arthur had their evening bath and their evening dinner, and they turned in for the night.

  On the fifth day, Arthur went back to his stonework. With his new enhancements, he got all of the walls done and two of the three remaining gatehouses. There was only had one gatehouse left, and it was the one on the western side of the village opposite where they expected the attack. He left himself time in the day because he wanted to catch up on some work in the forge.

  He used the two points from Fire Magic and put both into Familiar Growth. He thought Balair should receive a reward for his performance the day before. The little dragon looked up at him when he selected the points and nodded to him. He then curled up and went back to sleep.

  For his 5 stat points, he put one into Agility, 2 into Wisdom, and 2 into Endurance. His last couple of fights had been brutal, and one hit had done significant damage. He felt the dire need for better health. It would also help when he finished the leather pieces he had been working on. That was part of his goal for the last part of the day. He needed to enchant them all so he could finish them.

  Arthur made his way to the blacksmith. He seemed to work better there. This was an excellent time to focus on the leather armor that needed to be finished. He went about getting the leather items enchanted. He put enchantments for Agility and durability on the vest and pants, durability, and speed on the boots, durability, and accuracy on the gloves, and durability and constitution on the cowl. He also made the metal stud bands for the leather to help increase the defense.

  Arthur was happy with the armor. It would give him and the girls all at least a bit of protection. It also had a few stats built-in, so it made it better. He decided to go ahead and put all 4 points in Eye of Rarity for his leatherworking. He then decided to pull up his new skill tree for Arcane Smithing.

  There was no question about it. Arthur may not have steel yet, but he wanted the knowledge for it. He used that point and checked again.

  Arthur decided to take Will of the Many for his second point. He wanted it because he was going to be making arrowheads. He then pulled up his new Enchanting talents.
