About This Book
Meeka Brown has been having a tough life. After a robbery gone wrong took the life of her husband, she was left alone to struggle to raise her son for the last two years on a waitresses salary.
Her job as a waitress is nothing but stress, and she juggles an online degree, while her boss makes her life miserable. It seems like she just can't catch a break. She finds herself driving home from work one night when her car breaks down and she has to walk the rest of the way home.
On her way home, a friendly stranger offers her a ride, but she declines. He persists, and he doesn't seem like the usual creeps that hit on her and her babysitter is on the clock, so she decides to take a ride with him, keeping her pepper spray close by of course.
He turns out to be an absolute gentleman, and a doctor, who just has a totally different attitude towards life. He seems like he comes from a totally different world from her, but she feels a connection. It doesn't hurt that she's been going through a two year dry spell too.
The next morning, she miraculously finds her car all fixed up, with a note from the Doctor asking her out. She thinks nothing of it, and chalks it up to either a rich guy looking to feel good about himself, or someone just trying to get into her pants.
But after finally getting some alone time for herself, and with the helpful encouragement of her mother, she decides to give him a call. And she is so glad she did, because they fall madly in love together. They date for the next few months and become even more infatuated with each other. They become so close that she even finally decides to introduce him to her son. When the doctor meets her son, his face goes pale white, as he discovers a disturbing secret.
Their relationship stays great for the next little while until she gets into a car accident and learns they are connected in a way that she would not have imagined. To top it all off, while she is in the hospital she finds out that she is pregnant.
Will this disturbing secret keep them apart? Or will their love overcome all odds and bring them together again?

Chapter One
Meeka sat in traffic, waiting for the light to turn red so she could spend another day at work. She looked at the clock on the dash and she knew that she was going to be late. It wasn’t because she did not leave early enough. It was the road work that was making traffic a nightmare. Meeka decided to call her job to give them a heads up and of course, her boss answered sounding pissed off as always. He was not the most pleasant man and five minutes late, was the end of the world as far as he was concerned.
“Sorry Sir, the traffic is a lot worse than it was last week.”
“Well then you will just have to stay later today. You know that I should write you up for this. You already have two marks against you. This one may make management decide to get rid of you.”
“Sir, I really need this job. I will stay later if that is what I need to do.”
“We will see what kind of mood I am in later I suppose. How much longer will you be?”
“I am half-way down Washington, so maybe another twenty minutes or so.”
There was a long audible sigh on the other end of the phone. Meeka gritted her teeth and tried to curb her own feelings. It was getting old, the job and especially the boss. She kept telling herself that she needed to find something else and her boss Johnny was concreting that fact. But she did need the job to take care of all of her responsibilities.
“Well get your ass here when you can. I guess the customers will just have to wait because you can’t figure out how to get here at the right time.”
Meeka heard the tone go dead on her phone and she almost threw it, but stopped herself before it could fly out of her hands. She couldn’t afford another phone right now, hell she was going to be happy if she could afford the electric bill that was coming due.
Meeka was a waitress and while the money was good sometimes, Johnny had put her on one of the worst shifts and she had seen a huge cut in her tips. Staying later also meant she would have to pay her babysitter for another couple of hours and that would cut into her take home pay even more. She sighed and cursed under her breath. She really needs to find something else, she thought to herself.
Traffic moved at a crawl for the next twenty minutes and it actually took her thirty minutes to get to Giovane’s. She ignored the sour look from the shift leader Johnny and went to look at the seating chart. Johnny had put her in the worst section again and she had fewer tables than the new girl that had started last week.
Stephanie was nice but dumb and Meeka knew the real reason that he had hired her. He always hired young pretty blondes and Meeka knew that if she hadn’t already been there when he was hired on, she would have not gotten a job from him. She always wanted to say something, but she knew that anything she said would fall on deaf ears.
She kept her mouth shut through the day and actually stayed four extra hours. Her total for the day was ridiculous and she had known that it was going to be bad, just not that bad. She was about to walk out of the door when Johnny stopped her.
“Make sure you get your ass here on time tomorrow Meeka, or you are done here.”
Meeka turned around without a word, though she was seething inside. This was not the first time he had given her such a hard time, and she knew it was because she wasn't the typical young blonde they hired at the restaurant. When one of the other girls was late, he never talked to them the way he talked to her. They wouldn’t even call and say they wer
e going to be late. She took several deep breaths as she walked out to her car in the expansive parking lot. She was still steaming ten minutes later when she took the back route to her home.
A few miles down the road, the check engine light came on. Meeka cursed again, not believing the kind of luck she was having. The car sputtered a few more times and then she lost all power. There was enough to get her to the side of the road, but she didn’t know what to do. She grabbed her phone and started to make a call when she lost the last bar of power.
“Fuck!”

Rick Michaels was driving home from another 12 hour shift at the hospital. He too, tried to avoid the traffic by taking McCallister Street. He was tired and he yawned several times on his way home. He was nearly there when he saw a car haphazardly parked on the side of the road with the caution lights blinking. He slowed down to make sure that there was no one in the car and didn’t think much of it. It was already ten o’ clock at night and all he could think about was a hot shower to wash the day away.
He went about a mile before he saw a young woman walking. He figured that she was from the car that was pulled over that he had passed earlier, so he pulled to the side of the road. She must have been walking the whole way and McCallister isn’t a place that anyone should have to walk along at night, especially a female. The town wasn’t that big, but it had some of the same problems that a person would find in a large city like Chicago.
He rolled the window down in his Porsche and waited for the woman to walk to the car. She almost passed him without looking, but he called out to her.
“Hey Miss, can I give you a lift somewhere?”
“No I am fine, thanks.”
The woman kept walking and Rick had to drive forward. He did not want to leave her on the side of the road alone.
“Miss, it is the middle of the night. You shouldn’t be walking in this type of neighborhood.”
The young woman turned to him then and his heart raced, she was gorgeous.
“This is my neighborhood.”
Rick chided his self for the comment and figured she must think he was a douche.
“Sorry, I still can’t let you walk home in the dark. Please let me take you home, it will make me feel better.”
Meeka stopped walking and looked over at the rich guy in his car. She had met men like him, she called them the knights. They were always looking for a maiden to save. She smirked at the thought. She was certainly not a maiden, nor did she need to be saved. She was almost ten miles from her house though and she wanted to get home to her son. There was also the fact that he was with a babysitter and she knew while she would not leave him alone, Candace had her own things to do and the meter didn’t stop until she got home.
“I am just going to have to drive along beside you then. It is my duty Ma’am. I couldn’t possibly leave you here.”
Meeka laughed a little and walked towards the car. She didn’t have any bad vibes off of the guy, but she did have her pepper spray on her keychain, just in case. You could never be too careful.
“Okay, thank you.”
The man leaned over and opened the door. Meeka had to admit that he was quite handsome, even for an older guy. He probably had ten years on her and by the looks of it, came from a completely different world than her.
“Hi, my name is Rick Michaels, nice to meet you.”
His hand came out and it engulfed her own smaller caramel hand as he shook it gently. Meeka gasped with the shot of electricity that the touch brought. She felt herself attracted to him in a big way, but couldn't put her finger on why.
“Thank you for the ride. I had already turned down a couple of rides from some questionable characters.”
“Well I am glad you didn’t turn me down. So what is your name?”
“Meeka.”
“Beautiful name for a beautiful girl.”
Meeka couldn’t help the look that crossed her face. Was this guy for real?
“Sorry that was really cheesy. It sounded better in my head, I promise.”
Meeka laughed again, at least he is funny she thought. They talked the whole way there about nothing. He asked what was wrong with her car and she told him what she knew, which wasn’t that much. The two were at her apartment before she knew it and she was kind of sad to say goodbye. The man was genuinely a nice guy and she wished that she could meet more guys like him. It had been so long since she had dated someone, but she knew that he was not from the same world as her.
“Can I get your number? Maybe we could go out some time.”
“Thank you so much Rick, but I don’t think that would be a good idea.”
“Why not?”
“It just wouldn’t. I really appreciate the ride though. You saved me a long night of walking tonight”
Rick laughed self-consciously.
“Sorry about that. I didn’t mean anything by it.”
“I know. We just come from two different worlds.”
Meeka bent towards him and was going to kiss him on the cheek. His head moved and she found her lips on his. She wasn’t sure why she did it, but she was kind of sorry that she didn’t get his number as she watched him drive away. She never thought she would be the type to kiss a stranger, but there was just something so mesmerizing about him. She touched her lips, feeling his soft lips on hers as she walked upstairs to her apartment.
The next morning she was surprised to find her car was parked out front with a note.
“I had it fixed for you last night, I hope you don’t mind. Pay it forward is a motto I live by. If you ever do change your mind, please call me.”
There were several numbers on the piece of paper and it was signed by Rick. Meeka stared at the note and started to cry. She had spent the night worrying about what she was going to do and how she was going to get to work the next day. There wasn’t even a thought of how she was going to pay for it and Rick had made her week. How could this wonderful stranger, who barely knew her, change her life in such a positive way so quickly?
Meeka almost called him, but she didn’t know what to say. She put it off as she started her car, but she could never bring herself to call him later on. As the days went on, she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. She felt like he pitied her and that is why he had done it, or he just wanted to get into her pants. Either scenario didn’t sit well with her, so she chalked it off to a rich guy trying to make himself feel better. While it may have been the wrong assumption, it was all she could come up with.
Chapter Two
While Rick thought of Meeka throughout the week, Meeka found herself busy and the nice man who gave her a ride home that night was becoming a distant memory. She was looking for another job and trying to traverse the job market, which was not so good. While she was working on a four year degree online, she found it impossible to get into her field with no experience. The jobs that she did get offered paid less than her waitressing gig, so she went to work every day, hating her job and Johnny, more and more.
Her parents took her young son for an overnight visit one night and she got an unheard of day off from being a single mother. She kissed her mom before she left their house after dropping off her son, Malik.
“Have fun Meeka, you deserve a night out.”
“I think I am going to just stay home and have a glass of wine. Maybe even read a book on my kindle. It has been so long since I was able to do that.”
“No Meeka, you need to go out. Don’t you think it is about time you start looking again? Malik needs a father figure in his life.”
“Mom, would you stop. There are plenty of woman raising sons on their own. I don’t have time for dating.”
“You know that I just want you to be happy baby. It has been a long time since you have dated anyone, since…”
“Okay mom I get it, I will go out with the girls tonight. Ashley has been asking me to come out, but I am not promising anything, okay?”
“That is all I want, just try.”
Meeka agreed and kissed her six year old before she left for the night. She thought about what her mother had said and she knew that she was right. Everything had changed with the loss of her husband two years back and she was just not ready to get close to anyone again. She silently wondered if she would ever be ready again.
The man from that night came back to her and as she drove home, she thought about maybe giving him a call. The piece of paper was still in her purse and when she did get back to her apartment, she pulled it out. Looking at the paper, she studied his handwriting, tight and rushed. What did he want from her or more importantly, what did he expect?
Chapter Three
Meeka’s hands shook a little when she dialed the number. She was not sure why she was so nervous, but she was nervous, the very idea of going out on a date terrified her to her very core. Maybe it was because she actually liked the guy, but she was still half hoping for his answering machine because she did not know what to say to him if he answered.
“Hello.”
Meeka inwardly groaned. She paused for a moment, her throat dry all of a sudden.
“Hi, is this Rick?”
“Meeka? I was wondering if you were ever going to call me. I am glad you did. Is your car working all right?”
“Yes thank you. I'm surprised you remembered me. I wanted to thank you for that, that was unbelievable nice of you and I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t fixed it.”
“No problem Meeka, it was my pleasure. I would be lying though, if I didn’t at least hope that you would call me back so I could hear that sweet voice of yours.”
“Yeah well, there is that. So um, I was wondering…”
“Yes.”
Meeka giggled a little with his eagerness.
“You don’t even know what I was going to ask yet.”
“Whatever it is, the answer is yes.”
“Well, I was wondering if you would like to go out sometime with me?”
“Yes, when?”
