“Bang goes the real story,” Hoffman commented sourly. “The police are bloody sure they did it and so am I. What a pisser. How do you feel about it?”
“Fairly sick, but I’ll take it philosophically.” Maltravers pulled on his coat as rain began to spit. “They’re not the first to get away with murder. Come on, I need a drink. I’ll tell you another story you can’t use either. What is it that journalists say about news stories? The best ones never get into print.”

Author’s Note
For those interested in such curiosities, the tomb of Dame Mary Page with its strange inscription referred to on pages 22 and 23 can be found in Bunhill Fields graveyard on the City Road in London, next to which are the offices of The Independent, the original of The Chronicle. However, while Dame Mary really existed, any journalists in this book do not — or at least only their names have been borrowed.
