Daydreaming
Kayla was both nervous and excited. She had waited for this day for a long time. So far, everything was perfect. She awoke almost two hours earlier than she normally had. It was 5 a.m., and she could not get back to sleep. She rolled over to her side and looked out the bay window that overlooked her back yard. She could almost hear all the voices of her friends and family congratulating her for completing her degree in record time and with honors. She sighed with satisfaction. Today was graduation day. She decided to get up, turn on The Morning News show, and make sure the weather forecast had not changed. It was supposed to get at least ninety, and there hadn’t been any clouds in the sky yesterday. She hoped for the same today.
Grabbing the remote, she turned on the TV and headed for the kitchen to start the coffee. She smiled as she remembered the gift that her mother had given her a month ago to help her save money. She had been frequenting Starbucks about five times a day, getting her favorite drink, a tall Caramel Mocha Macchiato. Her mother had gasped at her admission, and three days later she had bought her a coffee maker that had all the bells and whistle for making any coffee beverage she could think of.
Kayla entered the kitchen and looked around. There were a few dishes in the sink from last night, and the floor could use a good sweeping. She decided to start the coffee maker and then clean the kitchen while she waited. Once her kitchen was clean, she returned to her room with a fresh cup of coffee in her hand. Now she needed to decide what to wear.
Looking at the clock it was only 5:45 a.m. Graduation did not start until 11 a.m. Her sister was coming at 9a.m. to do her hair and makeup. She rolled her eyes. Alice was such a girl and made such a fuss when it came to special events. However, today was a special day and she wanted to look special, especially when Bill saw her.
Kayla and Bill had been in the same study groups a few times, and she had to admit that she really liked him. He was very attractive. He seemed a bit serious most of the time but when he smiled, it lit up his face. His hazel eyes were bright and intense. She could get lost in those eyes. She found herself watching him as he explained a case study or read. She just liked looking at him. Kayla felt her body heating up. She had noticed her body responding more and more to him. She wasn’t sure how she felt about it but she didn’t seem to mind it this morning.
She sat on the bed and decided to read for about an hour. While in school, other than reading for class, she really didn’t have time to read. She sat her back against the headboard and pick up her Kindle. Scrolling through the carousel, frowning at the titles that scrolled by. She finally decided to read Absolution by Susannah Sandlin. She recalled reading Redemption last summer.
“Let’s see what the Vampires in Penton are up to now,” she said aloud.

Kayla looked up and gasped: it was 8:15 a.m. She shut down her Kindle and jumped up to take a shower. Her sister would be here in 45 minutes and she had to be dressed. She cursed under her breath. Her sister was not one to run late, and, if anything, she would be ten minutes early.
Looping her towel on the towel rack, she stepped under the hot, inviting spray. Turning her back to the shower, Kayla let the spray pound into her shoulders giving her a massage. After relaxing a few more minutes, she soaped her loofah and swiped it across her body. Relishing in the smell of Black Orchid and Juniper Oil, she went over her body again.
Tilting her head back, she let the water run over her forehead and hair. Pouring the thick silky cream of her Cantu Shea Butter Moisturizing Cream Shampoo into her hand, Kayla stepped out from under the spray and smoothed it over her head. Closing the lid, setting it back down, she lazily worked it into lather, letting her mind daydream while she did so.
She was getting excited about seeing Bill. She let her mind wander to his lips; his shoulders that were broad; his arms that were toned and muscular. She liked watching them flex and relax as he turned the pages of his books. His thighs were strong and from what she could tell when he wore jeans just as toned as his arms. She let her imagination take her to what she thought his chest and stomach looked like. She felt her knees grow a bit weak.
She chuckled, look at you girl, the man has not even given the slightest notion that he likes you and you are already fantasizing and daydreaming about him. Get a grip! She thought.
Tilting her head back again, she rinsed her hair, turning up the hot water. Pouring her companion Conditioner onto her hair, she lathe
red it up and let it set in her hair as she picked up her shaving gel and applied it to her under arms, legs and bikini area. Picking up the razor, she began to shave her legs, and then touched up her bikini area, smiling as she pictured Bill watching her. Satisfied with the newly shaven skin, she finished with her underarms. Rinsing the soapy hairs off her body, she remembered a time her body was truly smooth to the touch.
Kayla liked that she had been so busy with school over the past three semesters that she had lost that extra 20 lbs. and her tummy had become nonexistent, and her legs were slender and shapely like they had been in high school. The study group members had decided to go to In-Shape City to set up a membership so they could go once a week. They would go as a group most times and that had helped her to start toning her arms. She liked the way she looked naked now. Her breasts were firm and perky, thank God. Her nipples were extremely sensitive and she had caught Bill sneaking peeks a few times when she wore something that was thin enough to show her erect nipples through the material.
Stepping back under the shower, Kayla let it cascade over her full length. Running her fingers through her hair to get the conditioner out, her imagination went into overdrive. Closing her eyes, she was no longer in her shower alone, Bill was there, and his hands in her hair, his body inches away from hers. His hands were gentle as they combed through her hair, sensuously massaging her scalp. He placed gentle kisses on her neck and cheek, as the conditioner ran over his hands, arms and down her body, his hands followed. Over her shoulders, down her breasts, his hands gently cupping them, as the spray teased her nipples erect.
“Hmm” he whispered.
The shrill ringing of the doorbell was definitely a demand to come back to Earth and get real. She had too much to do without mooning over some guy who was not interested in her.
The Plans
Almost everyone had arrived. Kayla’s car had failed her, refusing to start again. She called Mitchell to come pick her up and would deal with her car later. She was running late. She was supposed to be at the school by 10:35 a.m. The mechanic she used would have to come and pick up the car. She inhaled deeply as it was just another unexpected expense. Mitchell arrived and smiled.
“You look like a million bucks,” he said admiring her finished look.
Kayla had to admit, her sister had done a great job slightly curling her hair and framing her face while pulling the majority of her hair back into a sloppy bun. Her makeup was light and enhanced the colors of the print in her free flowing dress.
“So is everything ready for the party?” Mitch was saying as she slid into the car. The plan was for the group to meet at Red Lobster for her favorite meal, and then they would go to The Highland Club. Marsha’s husband, another member in the study group, owned the club and since they had all become good friends, he offered to host the graduation party for them. The study group and all their guests would be there.
“Yes, everything is all set up I hear,” Kayla said wondering if Bill had planned to join them.
Kayla just knew this party might get a bit out of hand. However, they needed to let go, and she knew that all of the members in her study group had worked hard over the past few years and deserved, as she did, to have a night of fun.
***
When they arrived at the club, it was crowded already. People were everywhere; Kayla grabbed a hold of Mitchell’s arm as he led the way to their designated spot. When they finally found their group, she quickly scanned the group for Bill, whom she didn’t see much to her disappointment.
Marsha and Wanda came over and congratulated her and Mitchell, handing them both a glass of champagne.
“We were about to make a toast,” Marsha slurred. Kayla shook her head; it had already begun.
“We were going to take turns. Now that we are all here, we won’t have to do it again later,” Wanda said nodding her head to Drew.
“Well, I will start. I am so grateful to all of you, and I look forward to what the future has in store for us. Together we can accomplish anything.”
There was a round of “Here here.”
Mitchell went next followed by Marsha, who spoke words barely understandable because they were so slurred. What they did hear, “Thanks for saving my marriage.” Her husband raised his glass and walked over to Marsha, kissing her on the cheek and wrapping his arm around her waist. The group clapped and a few people wiped tears from their eyes.
Kayla decided she was the last one left to go, so she cleared her throat and lifted her glass.
“It’s been a rough road. Many times we had to talk each other out of giving up. We helped each other keep our eyes on the prize; we always seemed to drift back together even when we were in different classes. I couldn’t have made it without you guys in my corner. Here’s to a bright future.”
Kayla raised her glass to her mouth to drink when someone touched her shoulder.
“My turn.” She turned to see Bill standing next to her and lowered her glass. As their eyes met she felt a blush in her cheeks. He smiled and lifted his glass. As he stared in her eyes, he spoke, never taking his eyes off hers.
The crowd applauded and several wolf calls went up. They all sipped from their glasses, and then Bill grabbed her free hand with his and pulled her toward the dance floor.
“Shall we?”
“I-I don’t dance,” Kayla said shyly.
“Then just sway with me,” he said as they reached the dance floor and he turned to face her.
As they pressed through a few couples to the middle of the floor, the music changed to a slow song. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her flush to him. Kayla stiffened but relaxed a few moments later when he began to move.
She leaned into him and laid her head on his shoulder. She fought the urge to nestle her head into his neck. As if he knew what she was thinking. He shifted his head. Kayla didn’t want this moment to stop. She liked being in his arms. The way that he was holding her, she felt safe and wanted. The world faded and they were the only two on the dance floor.
She could smell his cologne. She knew the scent. It was Calvin Klein’s Eternity. However, there was more, he smelled clean and his own natural scent pervaded. Kayla’s head was swimming. She wanted to dance the night away in his arms. Actually, she wanted to do many things in his arms. She allowed her arms to crawl up his body to wrap around his neck, and she looked up into his eyes once more.
Things Changed
By the time they made it to the table, some of the guests had left, and Mitchell was sitting next to Wanda. He had been trying to ask her out for a while now. Kayla slowed her pace and Bill did the same. They glanced at each other; Bill had a huge smile on his face. Kayla smiled in appreciation of his. He looked happy and suggested that they get a drink to give Mitchell some more time with Wanda. Kayla didn’t have to be told twice.
So they stood at the bar for minutes, laughing over things they’d experienced over the past few years in college, and bits and pieces from their lives. They kept the conversation light, but Kayla realized he was wise to her nervousness. Trying to hide it, she laughed too hard at his jokes, kept talking over him, and told him too much about miniscule things in her life. Feeling like a high school girl with a crush, she began to walk back over to their table. It seemed he wasn’t going to join her when she felt his arm slink around her shoulders possessively.
Trying hard to think of something to say, Kayla wasn’t paying attention to where she was walking, and tripped over a chair that was too far from the table. He caught her before she fell and kept hold of her hand as she steadied herself.
He ducked his head so he could look into her eyes, once she was righted, “Are you okay?”
Kayla nodded sheepishly. Bill then stood next to her and put his arms around her waist, making sure that nothing would obscure their path. She wasn’t used to this attentive Bill. He made Kayla feel as though they were together as a couple. She tried to remind herself it was just the fall but there was something in the way he looke
d at her. Something was different. Somehow, things had changed in just a few hours.
It had been a long time since anyone had held her. Kayla wasn’t use to being touched at all anymore. She hadn’t had a boyfriend or sexual encounter for most of the time she was in college.
As they neared the table again, Kayla heard a song that she listened to when she wanted to relax. Adam Levine’s voice filled the club as he sang the lyrics to Sunday Morning. She began to sing the lyrics, slowed to a stop, and began to sway from side to side. Bill gave her a puzzled look, not understanding why she had said she couldn’t dance. Then, moving slowly to the music, Kayla smiled and said, “I guess if I like the song I can dance, huh?”
Watching her very carefully, he took in her moves and as she raised her arms above her head, he smiled with approval nodding his head to the music. He moved closer to her and leaned his mouth closer to her ear.
“Would you like to dance with me?”
“Sure.”
They walked to the dance floor once again. Kayla was raptured into the laid-back lyrics of the song and moved her hips seductively as he looked on.
All of a sudden, it mattered less that Bill was a friend and Kayla was trying not to read too much into his actions. She wanted to taste his kiss. She could feel his body touching hers, teasing her, and as his eyes searched her face, a war went on inside her heart. Kayla didn’t do things like this. She didn’t get caught up in the moment. But this felt so good; she hadn’t been touched like this in years?
Kayla let herself relax a little, and smiled at him. Then he pulled her in close and let their bodies sway as one to the music. Kayla could feel her face flame and was happy it was so dark there in the club. But that didn’t save her. He chuckled as if he knew she were blushing and again pulled her even closer. Whispering in her ear, “Your body feels really good next to mine. You are such a beautiful and sexy woman. I have always thought so.”
Leaning back in his arms, her smile grew. Raising a hand to his cheek, Kayla leaned into him and met his lips with her own, just a couple of small kisses. That’s what she told herself. Just enough to satisfy her curiosity but Bill had ideas of his own. Still holding her gently, he deepened the kiss, and her body woke as if from a lifetime of sleep, and was rejoicing in being alive. It now had a mind of its own and knew what it wanted. Kayla had to concur with it.
