Charlie called up a wide smile for the man. “I was wondering if I’d see you again.”
“I still haven’t had the fish,” he said.
“No, I imagine not,” Charlie said, nodding. “You know why no one here is waiting on you, right?”
Pain filled his face and if she hadn’t known better, she would have sworn his pale gray eyes had gone glassy with tears. He nodded his head. “I think I do.”
“Is there anything I can do for you? Maybe send a message to someone?”
He folded his hands and stared at them, his face becoming pensive. “You’d do that for me?”
“It’s sort of my specialty,” Charlie said. “I help people in your situation all the time.”
The man nodded and cleared his throat. “Well, I suppose the thing I need to share the most is that my wife didn’t mean it.”
“Didn’t mean what?”
“You see, after Eleanor passed, I didn't feel like doing much of anything. Not even talking to my daughter. And I should have talked to her. Should've told her things.”
“I know,” Charlie said, nodding. “It's hard, though. So this was about your wife?”
“Oh, yes,” he said. He touched a finger to his forehead. “I guess even old dead guys forget stuff.”
Charlie chuckled. “What would you like me to tell your daughter about your wife.”
“Well as much as I love my wife, she could be a spiteful old bitch.”
Charlie bit her lips together to keep her mouth from gaping open. She nodded.
“A few months before she died, she and my daughter had a falling out over the man that April had fallen in love with. My wife swore my daughter would never wear her pearls or her diamond ring, especially not for her wedding. But after Colleen died, I thought that was wrong. April should have those things. If for no other reason than to spite her mother.”
“All right.” Charlie said, fighting to hold in the laughter threatening to burst out of her. “Did your wife put them someplace? Or maybe you did?”
“My wife put them into a safe deposit box at Bel-com. Box number 4636.”
“Is there a key?”
“Yes. It's taped to the underside of the top desk drawer in my study. It was still there when I looked the other day, but April's been talking about getting rid of it because she wants to sell the house.”
“I understand. I will let her know where the key is and the number of the box. Is there anything else?”
The old man smiled. “What's your name?”
“My name is Charlie Payne.”
“It's very nice to meet you, Charlie Payne. My name is Marlon Forbes. Thank you for this.” He gave her the address to April's house. “Just let her know that her daddy loves her. And that no matter what, he's proud of her.”
“I will let her know.” Charlie smiled wide. “Do you think you can move on now? Or do you think you might need a little help? I have a friend. He's a guide for people like you.”
Marlon cast his eyes skyward and a slight smile curved his lips. “Oh no. I think I can find my way.”
“All right, Marlon. You go ahead then. And if you run into a woman named Bunny Payne, tell her Charlie said hey.”
“I sure will,” Marlon said, then disappeared.
Charlie pulled her new phone from her purse and quickly jotted down the information that Marlon had given her. She would stop by on her way to pick up Evan. A smile stretched her lips. This was her life. Her crazy, busy, ghost-helping life, and she loved every minute of it. She took another sip of her coffee and played with her silverware until Jen brought her a plate of pancakes.
