She pulled out of his arms, and swiveled to face him. The waning sunlight turned the tips of her lashes to gold. “Julian? You mean Sir Julian Carling?”
He nodded.
“But you can’t marry her, you’re married to me.”
“You noticed,” he said smugly.
“Of course I noticed!”
“Good.”
He leaned forward and kissed her. He took his time, and did it thoroughly, not caring that her parents might be watching.
When he’d finished, she returned to the subject like a dog with a bone. “Why was Sir Julian talking to you about marrying his daughter?”
“He wasn’t talking to me about it. He was discussing it with my father,” he said then laughed as she placed her hands on her hips and glared at him. “They had decided I should divorce you and marry Elizabeth Carling.”
“Divorce me?” Tiffany’s bravado disappeared like a deflated balloon. She looked stunned, then apprehensive.
“Don’t worry. I told them that I had no intention of divorcing you—that you were pregnant with my baby. And, yes, I believe that. Just as I believe that you were a virgin that first night we made love.” He also knew that this woman would never bore him. She was his forever. “Now it’s my turn to make a confession.”
“What is it?”
He handed her a piece of paper. “I never did intend to stay married to you after we had the tests done.”
“You intended to cut and run if the baby wasn’t yours?”
He nodded. “And if it was mine I intended to keep the baby here, divorce you and send you home.”
“What an utterly diabolical plot!”
“I know.” He pointed to the paper she held. “That contract you’re holding will ensure that you will feel safe, that I will never do something like that. You only need to sign it.”
She glanced at it, then flung her arms around him. “You know I told myself I was looking for someone ordinary.”
“The man that you’re looking for is going to be very hard to find.”
“No.” She released him and shook her head. “I’ve decided he isn’t what I want. I want someone special. Someone like you. No one ordinary would ever have confessed what you did—or given me that kind of assurance in writing. I love you. That’s very hard for me to say. I’m beginning to think I never intended to love anyone. But I love you because you are incredibly special.”
His heart stopped at her confession. “I love you, too. You are the most important person in my whole world. You fill my world,” he whispered, drawing her back into his arms. “There is only you. There will only ever be you.”
