Claimed by Drago Wolf (Magnificent Beasts Book 1) Page 13

by Ana Calin

“It’s only a temporary thing, Princess,” Drago says calmly. “Until we find the leak.”

“Well maybe it’s one of the serpents, someone who stayed behind in this town.”

Drago shakes his head. “Can’t be. We would sense the serpents.”

  “You never sensed Sullivan.”

“I never came close to him except at the last moment. Listen, Princess, someone has been leaking information, that’s a fact. It will take a while until the snakes are strong enough to try and retake Darkwood Falls, but that moment will come unless we find the leak in time.”

Princess lowers herself back onto the chair, her perfect eyebrows knitted together as she thinks. “It could be anyone then, anyone from the town. It could be Mrs. Barnabas, Christie the barmaid, the coroner, or even the pool boy. But please understand—it’s not me, and I can’t work for Nero Wolf. He’s, I don’t know, he’s intimidating.”

“Give him a chance, meet him in person,” Drago says. “You’ll see he’s mostly a nice puppy. Until he has reason to grow huge and bare his fangs.”

A shadow crosses Princess’s face. I’ve known her a long time and, even though I can’t read her thoughts, I know when she’s distressed. The red cheeks, the way she bites her lip, the way she averts her eyes. One thing I know for sure—she can’t be the one leaking info to the serpents. But she does have something to hide, and that’s what Nero senses.

I still don’t know Nero the Alpha well enough. He hasn’t moved to Darkwood Falls yet, he just visits from time to time. He likes surveying all the werewolf business from his gothic manor up in the mountains, where Drago took me after he fought Sullivan and his minions. But one thing stuck out about his personality every time we met—that he’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants. If Nero is certain Princess is keeping a dangerous secret from the werewolves, he’ll dig deep, ravaging her very soul, until the darkest corners are brought to light, and her secret is disarmed.

It might cost Princess her soul. But I have a feeling Nero won’t get out of the battle unscathed either. On the outside, Princess may be a spoiled rich girl with childhood trauma. On the inside, she’s a weapon. Only she doesn’t know it yet.
