Chapter One
Some gals just knew how to work with what they had. Katherine Andes had a little age on her, but by damn, she could work her way around a man’s cock.
“Fuck me.” Reason Richards’s knees buckled and his knuckles popped as he gripped the beer bar behind him. “You’re killing me here, woman.” And that very well could’ve been the understatement of the year. Katherine had been on her knees for the better part of the last fifteen minutes, teasing and pleasing, sucking and fucking.
She’d screwed her mouth down on Reason’s cock until he could’ve sworn the woman had a real knack for giving head. Never in his thirty-one years had Reason been the recipient of such a masterful blow job and he had serious doubts if he’d ever enjoy another after this gal had gone to town like she was born to spend her later years on her knees.
At least forty-five, Katherine didn’t look a day over thirty. She had a curvy body, generous tits, and a firm ass that she must’ve worked hard to achieve.
Reason grinned as her head bobbed. He could only imagine how this cougar kept her figure.
“I’m about down for the count, sweetheart,” he crooned, verifying the time by the clock on the wall. Nory Baldini, his boss’s cousin, would soon drop by and in another hour, the fellows would start showing up for their evening shifts.
Katherine’s tongue swirled around his thick pulsing head. “Tell me you haven’t enjoyed me.”
“I think we both know I’ve had a hell of a good time, but I’m on the clock, honey.”
Her head dipped and she sucked like crazy, pulling him to her throat and humming the hell out of some sultry tune.
“Fuck! Have mercy!” His balls tightened. His cock jerked. And when he came, he shot his load down her pulsing throat while swearing the sweet cougar had sucked him dry.
“Whew!” He blew out a hard breath and stared down at her, wondering what he’d done to deserve this sort of opening-night surprise. “You’re damn good at what you do, lady. I’ll give you that.”
She rose to her feet and grinned at the door, licking her lips as if she were putting on a show. As it turned out, she definitely wanted the stage.
“Age trumps immaturity, young ladies,” she said with an air of authority. “And experience is always better than the lack of it.”
When her gaze averted, Reason should’ve grabbed a clue.
Instead, he was too zapped to care until he heard, “Really, Reason? You’re banging Doris Andes’s mom?”
“What the—” He ducked behind the bar and hurriedly stuffed his dick in his jeans. Shooting Katherine a scowl, he hollered over his shoulder, “Hang on, Nory. Y’all wait right there.”
“See you, darlin’,” Katherine crooned, grabbing her purse off the ledge next to the cash register.
Reason zipped and buttoned before standing again. He immediately noticed Nory’s companion, Jade Summers, a little hottie who had befriended Nory right after she arrived in Fletcher. She’d only been around for a few months, but damnation, Reason couldn’t remember a time when she’d looked so fine.
Katherine passed the women with a cocksure strut. She paused long enough to brush her fingers across her lips and ogle the same gal who had grabbed Reason’s undivided attention. “I don’t know which of you girls has eyes for Mr. Richards—probably you, Miss Summers—but take it from a woman who knows. He is simply delicious.”
Not quite ready to face his audience after that remark, Reason hurried through the café-style doors and straight into the employee restroom. After cleaning up a bit, he splashed water on his face, dragged his fingers through his hair, and ridiculed himself for being too damned curious.
He now understood why the bartenders at Clink treated Katherine like a queen regardless of her reputation. Ever since she’d divorced a prominent Asheville businessman and made her home in neighboring Fletcher, she’d worn her cougar reputation like a brand.
A regular customer prior to Clink’s forced remodeling job—compliments of Hank Sarsarone and the five families—Katherine had often popped in to see how the cleanup was coming along. She generally stayed long enough to dish around favors. Reason had managed to steer clear until she stopped by with several potted plants, a gift to welcome Clink back into the business community.
The club had only been closed for five weeks.
He cursed under his breath. Katherine’s timing couldn’t have been worse.
“She had a motive,” he whispered, staring at his reflection.
Wanting to kick his own ass for not seeing it sooner, he quickly reminded himself of his newly turned leaf. He was living without regrets. Whatever Katherine’s goals were, he couldn’t concern himself with them.
He was single. And while single, he could sow his wild oats and use Katherine’s mouth as long as she was offering.
Considering the night ahead, Katherine had provided thoughtful inspiration. Kimberly Cartwell, one of Clink’s owners, had told the bartenders to pump up the sex appeal. Since the over-forty crowd seemingly gravitated to Clink now because of the bartenders, he couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the grand re-opening.
Running his fingers through his hair one last time, he grabbed a box of beer and bumped the double doors with his hip. “You’re a little early.”
Nory laughed. “I thought you might need assistance. It’s a big night. I brought along some help to prep food.”
“I never turn away free labor. Boss’s orders.” The “assistance” in question must’ve bolted. “Where’d your friends go?”
Nory frowned. “They’re outside.”
“They didn’t want appetizers on the house?”
“Guess they were afraid of what you’re serving.”
Reason arched a brow. “You getting sassy with me, scrawny girl?”
Nory grinned at the nickname Reason had given her thanks to her own references about herself. She pulled up a barstool. “Can I shoot straight with you?”
“Always.” He wasn’t sure he wanted to hear this, considering Nory and company had just caught him in the act.
“You have to promise not to get mad.”
“All right.”
“Say ‘I promise’ and I’ll tell you.”
“I promise, Nory.” Reason grabbed a knife from underneath the bar and sliced the box top. He opened the upright cooler and held the door with his elbow as he unloaded the beer bottles. “Well?”
“You were used but you set yourself up for it.”
“Used?” He glanced at the very spot where he’d been hanging on for dear life while cramming his cock down one eager cougar’s throat. He shook off the thought. “How?”
“Reason, Katherine Andes is a bitter whore.”
“Norina Baldini.” He shook his head, disappointed. “Since when do you talk about someone you barely know?”
“Oh I know her, all right,” she said. “And to answer your question: Since the forty-eight-year-old hag has had it in for my twenty-year-old friend.”
“What do you mean, she has it ‘in for’ your friend and who are you talking about?”
She cocked her head. “Really? How many older friends do I have?”
“You only have one that I know of.” And Reason had thought a lot about Jade Summers as of late. In fact, he’d had some pretty intense dreams about the woman. “How would Jade know Katherine?” She hadn’t been in town long enough to know much of anyone.
“She dated Katherine’s son Barry.”
“So what’s that got to do with me?” Reason should’ve taken opportunity by the horns and found a way to ask if Jade and Barry were still together. Had she moved on? Was she seeing anyone? Would she like to fuck a bartender?
God, he was losing his mind.
Nory shook her finger at him. “I’m on to you, Reason.”
“Yeah?” He laughed. “So is everyone else.”
“Uh-huh. You nearly foam at the mouth when Jade is around.” A beat later, Nory said, “Anyway … Katherine hates Jade. She didn’t like her when Jade dated her son and she doesn’t care for her now. Recently, Jade and Barry went out to lunch to swap out boxes, you know do the whole breakup thing. It’s ultra-cool to do that now, just for future reference.”
“Noted,” he grumbled. Reason didn’t need to worry about breaking up since he didn’t date.
“Anyway, it was fairly civilized until Barry told her that he didn’t want the separation. He mentioned the l-word and it went downhill from there.”
“Are you going somewhere with this? I need to find someone to slice potatoes and chop onions.”
Nory rolled her eyes. “In a nutshell, Jade told Barry that she wasn’t interested in him because she has a thing for another guy.” She waggled her brows. “Or two. She’s been around the family long enough now that she sees the advantages in multiple partnerships.”
“Great. Well, I hope she didn’t break his precious heart into a million fragile pieces.” Reason stuffed the beer box underneath the bar.
“Don’t you see what’s right in front of you?” She put her hands on her hips. “Come on, Reason!”
He blinked. Nory was mild-mannered and seldom raised her voice. Obviously she was miffed. She’d caught him in a compromising situation. She looked up to him. In many ways, Reason, along with Kellan Andrews and Ansley Cartwell’s four husbands, had become Nory’s surrogate big brothers. All things considered, Reason was embarrassed and should probably apologize.
“You don’t know,” Nory sang.
“Know what exactly?”
She’d just opened her mouth to explain when Kellan entered the front door. “Hey, Nory. What’s going on, Reason?” Before they answered, Kellan thumbed the air behind him. “Nory, who’s the babe dressed in white outside? Please, God, tell me she’s over twenty-one.”
“It’s Jade,” Reason muttered, shooting him a quick grin. “And no.”
Nory crossed her arms and eyed Reason suspiciously. “Her birthday is next Friday, as a matter of fact.” She fluttered her eyelashes. “She plans to celebrate here.”
Reason saw Jade in a very different light then. Kellan only went out with buxom beauties, the real lookers. If he had noticed her, she was doing something right to turn heads. Jade had been around some in the past, but Reason hadn’t seen her in recent weeks. “What’d she do to her hair?”
“Blonde is her natural color,” Nory replied.
/> “She’s looking good since she ditched the homely look.” Kellan grabbed a soft drink out of the cooler. “Is she single?”
“She is,” Nory replied, grinning at Reason. “But she has her sights set on someone.”
“That’s never stopped me before,” Kellan said, taking a swig of his drink. “Be a friend, Nory. Go drag her in here to keep us company.”
“Not unless Reason says it’s okay.”
“Reason?” Kellan averted his gaze. “How’s this your business?”
He narrowed his eyes on Nory. “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?”
“Yep,” Nory replied, turning to Kellan. “She’s got a thing for Reason. He hasn’t noticed. Now that I’ve told him, it’s probably too late.”
“She is one fine female.” Kellan tilted his drink at Nory. “You didn’t hear me say that.” He bumped Reason’s shoulder in passing. “What’d you do to screw that up, man?”
Nory traipsed to the door. “He let Katherine Andes have a go at him. We walked in and caught them in the act.”
Sterling and Stellan Taylor showed up for work next. Wearing their grins like clowns in masks, they made a few catlike calls and mentioned Katherine.
“You won’t live this one down,” Kellan said.
“I get that impression, too.”
“Hey, Nory.” Stellan turned four shades of red as soon as he spoke to her.
“My, my, my, won’t you look at this pretty girl?” Sterling turned all the way around, working his bad-boy reputation by ogling Nory more than he should have.
“Hey, guys,” Nory said, blushing.
“See that?” Kellan asked, keeping his voice low.
