“We need to find a way to get him back. I refuse to leave anyone behind. I failed Ben by not being there when he needed me, and I’m going to make sure we get him back. Help me up, Max, I need to go and talk to the rest of the group. We need to figure this out together. I refuse to lose anyone else, and as soon as we figure out which situation is more pressing, we’re going to go after everyone we lost in order of situational danger.”
Max immediately snapped to attention. When Garrett had been in the military, there was a certain way he spoke and did things that let even the dumbest person know he meant business, and right now, he was in that mood. Garrett felt it course through his body as well, and the extra adrenaline made him feel like he was indestructible. He got to his feet, swaying slightly as the pain punched through his chest, and started a Frankenstein-like shuffle toward the door. It shocked Max into motion, and he immediately draped Garrett’s arm over his shoulder, taking the brunt of Garrett’s weight while guiding him through the building, since he’d never seen it before. The confidence that Garrett had felt about being able to do a rescue mission drained away faster and faster the more he tried to move.
By the time he got into the room the group was using as a family room, he barely was able to stand upright. He steadied himself and looked around the room at everyone gathered. He may have failed Ben, but he wouldn't fail anyone here again. One way or another he would find a way to bring them back home. The thought gave Garret the strength he needed to straighten his back and square his shoulders. He was determined that failure was not an option.
