“It isn’t that funny, Willow. What made you even think of that? It was so long ago.”
“You just said you would do anything for me and that wasn’t always the case. See? You weren’t so perfect back then, X. I much prefer this version that would take me riding if I wanted to go.” I dangle my point in front of him to discover his reaction. I don’t have to wait long.
Xander lets his mouth hang open before slamming it shut. He clearly isn’t sure how to respond, so I let him off the hook easily enough. “Don’t stress out. I was mostly joking but I do enjoy horses so it’d be fun. Maybe you could just stay on the ground while I ride.” Being playful with Xander lifts my spirits to incredible levels. We used to cackle together on the daily so this brings back another long lost chunk of our history.
He visibly relaxes and snatches my hand back into his much larger one. “You’re a brat, Wills. That obviously hasn’t changed. If you actually want to go though, I would take you. I don’t think I have the power to deny you anything.” I could take advantage of his confession but instead, a calm washes over me because I feel exactly the same way.
“I love you so much, X. Thank you for coming back to me. Not just once, but twice.” My eyes begin watering for an entirely different reason.
Xander slides his fingers through mine until our palms touch. “Thank you for saving me, Wills. Not just once, but twice.” His bright blues sear into my glowing greens.
The final piece of our complex maze locks into place as our souls merge into one.
Our forever starts now.

Three Months Later . . .
Why am I so freaking anxious? These bubbling emotions are reminiscent of days I never want to recall but I am nervous for entirely different reasons now.
I concocted this elaborate plan ages ago, before I left for the war. Willow has always been the one for me and I finally feel like the man she deserves. I’m ready to show my worth.
Thankfully, her parents are game and have been extremely helpful by convincing Willow that we’re needed at their house on a random Saturday afternoon. This is corny as fuck, but today’s the anniversary of when we first met. Back when we were little kids and weren’t plagued with worries or responsibilities. We didn’t have a care in the world except who to play with at recess. It was always Willow for me.
I managed to keep her from getting suspicious all week but once we arrive at her childhood home, her pesky curiosity begins taking over. She kept digging into the reason we’re invited but I didn’t let any details slip. It doesn’t help matters when her parents remain very tight lipped throughout our stay. I could see the cogs and gears working overtime in Willow’s brain.
I do my best to distract her by reminding her of our plans to go out later. She was shocked to discover I’d arranged a night out that evening and it worked momentarily. I made sure to include Lark, no matter how obnoxious she is, since she’s become really close friends with her. Willow doesn’t know it yet, but I want her surrounded by love tonight.
Being in public still freaks me out but I rein that shit in. I’ve made a lot of progress since Willow brought me back to life. With her by my side, anything is possible. I’m a solid example of the power of love’s persuasion but it’s obviously due to more than that. The guys I’ve met at the clinic have impacted my success immensely. I’m looking forward to hanging out with them to hopefully celebrate some big news.
We are slowly strolling toward the park as I continue reflecting on our recent time together. Willow and I go back to the cabin sometimes to make new memories. I gave her freedom to decorate however she pleased and she definitely didn’t disappoint. The house now feels like a home, a place we can go to relax and enjoy being away from the busy city. I really enjoy those quiet times but I’m happy around her regardless of where we are. Most of all, I hope she wants to spend the rest of her life with me. We are about to find out one way or another.
As we near the swings, I hold the seat so Willow can hop on. I grip the chains so she doesn’t move as I lean into her for a quick kiss. She tries to deepen the display of affection but I have a speech to get through. I break the contact between our lips but remain close enough that our mouths brush when I whisper, “I love you, Wills.” She shudders subtly and it isn’t from the mild chill in the air. Before she has a chance to respond, I drop down to one knee.
Willow gasps loudly and tears immediately fill her vibrant eyes. The green pools shimmer with devotion and speak louder than any words. I delicately grip her left hand in mine as I retrieve the small velvet box from my front pocket.
I clear my throat in an attempt to dislodge the lump forming. I can tell my eyes are expressing how emotional this moment is for me too.
“My sweet Wills, you are the love of my life. My fated destiny. You are my soulmate. My light in the darkness. You’re my queen. The one I want to grow old with. My brave savior. You’re my beginning and end. My absolute everything.” I release a shaky exhale as I lift the lid to reveal the sparkling emerald-cut diamond solitaire. Her breath hitches and she straightens her fingers nestled in my palm. She’s my eager girl too; l forgot to include that one.
“Willow Shae, will you marry me?” A lone tear trickles down my cheek when I finally ask the question I’ve been holding onto for far too long.
Willow leaps into my arms, which almost knocks me over, before shrieking, “Yes!”
I stand with her wrapped around me and spin us in fast circles. The next thing I know, we’re kissing passionately in the middle of a children’s playground. I give into my desperate need for a few moments before sliding Willow down my body. I clutch her tiny hand and slide the diamond ring onto her third finger.
What a sight to fucking see.
Once the physical representation of our engagement is settled into place, I gently kiss along her knuckle before catching her radiant gaze.
I stare deeply into the green eyes of my entire future. “I can’t wait for you to be my wife.”
the end
So, what did you think of my debut novel? I really hope you loved reading Redefining Us because I really enjoyed writing it. That means you’ll be hearing plenty more from me, very soon!
Through this process, I’ve discovered that it truly takes a village, and my village is mighty.
First and foremost, I better thank my amazing husband. The real-life Prince Charming. When I told him I was writing a book, he was nothing but supportive. For the past several months he’s allowed me to binge on social media. He’s been patient when I would ignore him for hours on end while I was stuck in “the zone”. Most importantly, he’s the greatest father our little boy could ask for. Thank you so much, Honey Bunches.
I told my friend, T. Setela, I wanted to write a romance and she immediately told me to do it. She encouraged me right from the start and because of her words, I kept going. I trust her explicitly and her shove gave me the confidence I needed. I owe it to her that I have a completed novel to share with you.
Words will never describe how much I owe Ace Gray. She busted her bum to edit my book and did a phenomenal job. Her novels are sensational and the day I randomly stumbled upon Twisted Fate on Facebook will go down as one of the best. Her heaving, engorged folds are no match for my impaling penetration. You’re the greatest, Ladyface!
My sister-from-another-mister, Chelle, has been fantastic as I got lost into the world of becoming an author. It isn’t very pleasant to sit next to a social media zombie while we are trying to have fun so I really appreciate your patience. I’m so lucky to have her as my forever friend and don’t know what I would do without her. I love you, MMM!
Lauren Blakely and Kahlen Aymes, you’re the reason I started loving romance novels again, so many years ago. Your words inspire me every day and I will always cherish your friendship.
Ella James, you’re a beautiful soul and I want to hug you daily. You brighten my life and your guidance is priceless.
AM Hargrove had an answer to ever
y question and always knew the right thing to say. Your pictures and stories of Walter make me giggle, which only adds to your already heaping charm!
Thank you SO much Victoria Ashley, Penelope Ward, SL Scott, Cora Brent, Adriana Locke, Tori Madison, S. Moose, J. Daniels, Beth Michele, and M. Robinson for being there for me through this terrifying journey and allowing me to badger you with never-ending questions. The advice you provided me with has allowed me to feel more confident and comfortable in my new author shoes. You’re wonderful and extraordinary!
JL Davis, I couldn’t have survived without you! It is so difficult to find genuine people through an online connection and I’m so fortunate to have you. When I started my author journey, you were there from the start, holding my hand. I heart you hard!
The author community is extremely supportive and I owe you all so much for continuing to encourage me. A huge shout-out to Author Friends With Benefits and Indies Ink!
A special note to my fellow besties: Jen, Bobbie, and Margie . . . I love you ladies!
I owe Natalie (and Jennifer) from Love Between the Sheets big time so let me know when you’re ready to collect.
Amy from One Book Boyfriend at a Time is truly wonderful and I’m so grateful for her help.
To my fellow bloggers, I know how hard you work for very little pay off. You make the author world go round so THANK YOU! I greatly appreciate each and every single one of you. I couldn’t have done this without the support you all provide each day.
To the readers, you are the reason authors keep publishing their books. You are the life force behind this industry. You are simply spectacular. My gratitude to all of you runs very deep and I can’t thank you enough for giving my debut novel a chance. Keep loving books for us, alright?
A huge thank you to my beta and proof readers. Proof This by Jen, Ace Gray, T. Setela, S. Killian, J. Gustafson, & C. Menden.
My formatting was done by Type A and they were amazing to work with. I owe them a lot for making my book look so pretty!
One last thank you to everyone that read Redefining Us. I greatly appreciate it! Reviews are the fuel for a book’s success so I hope you consider leaving one, especially if you loved Willow and Xander’s story.
Thank you all so much!
