“Abby doesn’t want me.”
“Don’t be a dick, Reaper. She has wanted you since she was sixteen! And right now she needs you. So sober the fuck up and go to her.”
“Fine.” I reached for my keys and knocked the glass off, smashing on the wooden floor.
“So you’re going home?”
“Yes, for fuck’s sake!”
“Good. Night Reaper. And I’ll see you next weekend.”
She hung up. What did she mean next weekend? Was she coming down or something? Great, just what I wanted.
I flicked the light off and walked out of the office.
“So you’re going home?”
“Fuck off, Brad.”
“Maybe I should drop you off; you have had a few.”
“I’m fine.”
“Come on, don’t be a dick about it.”
“Fine, drive me then.” I gave in. All that mattered was I got there, and right now I didn’t give a fuck how that happened. I guess I had had a few too many. Was I really in the state to be seeing Abby?
***
I was staring at the front door when Brad pulled out of the driveway and took off. I wasn’t rushing in. This would be the first time in a week I was home before midnight or early morning. After how Abby acted at the clubhouse, I wasn’t sure she wanted to see me.
Sighing, I opened the door. It smelled of cooking and wood from the open fire.
“Reaper?”
“Yeah, it's me.”
Abby walked out of the lounge room and stood in the door frame. “You’re home?”
“Yeah.”
She looked me up and down and frowned. “You’re drunk.”
“Something like that.”
“Right.” She crossed her arms and shook her head at me. “Surprised you even made it here.”
“I’m here, aren’t I?”
A smile spread across her face. “Yeah, you are.” She walked across to me till she was standing in front of me and with one movement, she wrapped her arms around my neck and brought her face up to mine. “I’m sorry for acting like a teenager.”
I would admit it, one touch from her and I couldn’t be mad at her. “It’s alright; you were just acting on your feelings. I’m here for you Abby, whatever you decide.”
“I love you, Kade.” And then her lips landed on mine, and suddenly the cares of the day disappeared and all I cared about was her.
I picked her up, throwing her legs around my waist, and carried her upstairs.
Chapter 39
Abby
I hadn’t made this decision lightly, and I knew going into it that this was going to be hard. I took a deep breath and shut my eyes. I was making the right decision.
“Reaper?”
I heard him upstairs.
“Yeah, darlin?” He ran down the stairs. I was in the lounge with a cup of tea. “You ok?”
“Yeah, I just wanted to know if you wanted to come to my ultrasound?”
His mouth slowly opened, and if I didn’t know better, I would say Reaper was in shock.
“So this means that you… um…” he stuttered.
“I’m keeping the baby, Kade.”
In one movement, he was across the room and had me in the air. I had just enough time to put my tea down. He hugged me tightly. “Shit, Abby, this just fuck, it's just fucking perfect.”
I laughed. “So you don’t mind being a dad?”
My legs wrapped around his waist.
“Abby, I want this.” He kissed my forehead.
“Well, I guess you will have the pleasure of telling my dad you knocked me up again.”
“Your dad? When is he coming into town?”
I cracked a smirk. “We are going to him. The charter is throwing a huge party for his birthday, and I already said we would be there.”
He rolled his eyes. “Of course you did.”
“So you better have no plans this weekend.”
“And too bad if I did.” He smirked at me. “Nah babe, nothing could ruin today, even seeing your dad doesn’t put me in a bad mood.”
“So does this mean you’re staying home today?” I perked up.
His face dropped “Nah babe, got to go in.”
I sighed. “I know the club comes first and all, but I really want you here.”
“Club doesn’t come first, not anymore, never has when it comes to you. You come first.” He lowered me down. “But today the club needs me.”
I frowned. “Ok then.”
I knew there was something going on and if it was my dad’s charter, I would know. But it wasn’t, and I had to let Reaper do what he needed, and maybe he wasn’t telling me because he was trying to protect me.
Hadn’t I proved to him that I didn’t need protection? I could handle myself.
Reaper
I had done a lot in my life so far. I had made many mistakes, and I had taken a fucking lot of lives. All in the name of the club. From being on the road tying up dead weights to being a President and making the call.
The lives I took affected me. Couldn’t say they didn’t. Each life I took marked my soul and put more distance between me and heaven’s gates. Then there was Abby.
Too good of a soul for the likes of me. But being the devil I am, I wouldn’t let go of her or let her let go of me.
I looked across the crowded clubhouse and spotted her. She was under her father’s arm, laughing and looking like the Queen she is. Her long blonde hair was curly, and she was dressed head to toe in black. She was beautiful and all mine. Still couldn’t believe she was going to be a mom. And this time, I won’t be taking my eyes off her.
She already had a prospect with her all day, and I was going to keep that going till she gave birth. When she wasn’t with me, she was with a member.
“So you knocked Abby up again?”
I blew out a mouthful of smoke and looked at Brad. “Yeah, you could say that.”
He whacked me on the back. “Let's hope this time it turns out better.”
“It will. I’m not letting anything happen to her.”
“Yeah, I already see you have a member watching her.” He gave me a questionable look, and I knew what he was getting at.
“It’s not because of that.”
He arched an eyebrow. “You sure about that?”
“Fuck off, Brad.”
I walked off on him and weaved my way through the club till I was at Abby’s side.
She let go of her dad and curved into my side. I kissed the top of her head. “You alright, darling?”
She looked up at me. “Be better if I could have something stronger than soda.” She wrinkled her nose.
I smirked. “Yeah, sorry about that.”
“So you should be.” She winked.
“Dad, I’m telling you it does matter.” Kim was sitting on Trigger’s lap and pointed a hand at Abby. “Abby, tell him it matters if he takes his heart medication.”
“Please tell me you haven’t stopped them again.” She sighed. “Dad, seriously.”
“Fucking stupid pills.” Roach gulped down his beer.
Didn’t blame the man, I wouldn’t want to take pills either.
“Reaper.” He looked at me like he finally noticed I was here or something. “Need to have a word with you and Brad.”
“Righto, boss.” I wasn’t going to tell him to fuck off, it was his birthday.
Abby grabbed the cigarette from my hand. “I swear I’ll quit tomorrow.”
“Sure babe.” I tilted her head back and kissed her sweet lips. “We’ll be back in a minute.”
I put my hand up for Brad and gestured for him to come over. Whatever Roach wanted, it was best to get it over with.
Brad
I knew it was coming, but just like a storm you could track, you still didn’t know when it would hit. But it had hit now. I knew the trip to Kelly was going to haunt us.
Roach’s veins up his neck were bulging out. “I fucking want answers.”
“It had to
be done.” Reaper was cold and to the point. “Couldn’t leave it like it was, and he needed to learn a lesson.”
“SO YOU KILLED HIS FUCKING WIFE!” Roach roared, and now I was glad there was a large party going on and no one else could hear this. “AND YOU LEFT THE MAN BREATHING!”
“She knew what she was getting into when you married a club president.” Reaper lit up a cigarette.
“So you saying Abby knows what she is getting into?” Roach was hard and straight to the point. “Cause I’m telling you right now boy, my daughter won’t die because of your mistakes.”
“I won’t let anything happen to Abby.” Reaper was defensive.
“Really? Because I’ve got contacts with the man and his gang and from what I’ve heard, the wife you killed was the main man’s wife! So not only have you called a war between us and them, you have put a fucking target on Abby’s head!!”
“I WON’T LET ANYTHING HAPPEN TO ABBY!” Reaper roared at him. “For fuck’s sake, I’ve protected her from worse.”
“No, you haven’t. She got shot up on your watch.”
“We weren’t together.” Reaper glared at him.
“Fuck that. You have been with her since she was sixteen. I’m not fucking dumb. So now you’re going to do what’s best for her.”
“I’m not breaking up with her.”
“She’s staying here where I can protect her, as far away from you as possible, until you sort out your shit and end this war. Kill the man that has it out for you, and then I’ll let Abby go back home.”
Reaper’s hands curled into tight fists. “DO you EXPECT me to take THIS!”
“Abby will die at your side. Here, she will be under my watch.”
“So you’re saying you can protect her better than me?”
“I’m saying they won’t dare target the mother charter. But once they find out you’re from a smaller charter and you have a partner, they will want blood. Abby’s blood. And I won’t let my daughter die in vain.”
“I’m not leaving her here. She is coming with me.”
Roach stood to his full height. “No, she’s not. You’re going to tell her for her safety she is staying here, and you are fucking lucky I’m letting you breathe for doing this, Reaper. You can tell her once it is safe, she can go back home.”
“She will hate me.”
“She might be pissed off about it, yes.” Roach sat down in his office chair. “So it’s settled. We tell Abby tomorrow.”
Reaper dropped the cigarette butt and stomped on it. Just like this conversation. He dropped it. Abby was in for a rude awakening tomorrow; she was going to learn what it really was like loving a club president.
Chapter 40
Abby
I looked from Brad to Dad to Reaper, and that’s where my eyes stayed. I couldn’t believe what they were telling me. I had to stay here. What the fuck for?
“Not happening, and Dad, I’m not impressed with you wanting to break Reaper and I up. Again.” I crossed my arms.
I was staring at Reaper, but he wouldn’t look up from the table. What did Dad have over him for him to be agreeing to this?
“Abby, it’s for your safety,” Dad kept his voice calm.
“No.”
“Abby, listen to your old man,” Brad put in.
“The only person I’ll be listening to isn’t talking, so you can all get fucked. Now Kade, can I talk to you alone?” I pushed myself away from the table and got up.
I heard the scraping of a chair and could feel him following me. I didn’t stop till I was at my old bedroom, and I swung the door open.
It was Reaper who closed it after himself.
“Ok, what’s going on? Is Dad blackmailing you or something?” I turned around and got straight to the point.
He sighed and looked up. His eyes were bloodshot. He ran a hand through his hair and sat down on the edge of my bed.
“Well?” I pressed.
“Your dad isn’t blackmailing me. It’s for your safety if you stay here.”
My mouth dropped open and then I shook my head. “Is this because of the baby?”
“No. Like I said, darling, it’s for your safety.”
“Why, what have you done?”
“Club business.”
“Don’t give me that shit.”
“Abby.”
“Kade, if you’re walking away from us, I need to know the real reason.”
“I’m not walking away from this, from us. It will be a couple of months, and then I’ll be back. You can come back home and things will go back to normal.”
“My safety. What did you do?”
“Club business.”
“WHAT DID YOU DO!” I picked up the first thing my hand landed on and threw it in his direction. It just happened to be a snow globe.
“Fine, I FUCKED UP!” He was on his feet now, angry and all furious. “I FUCKED THINGS UP! Now your life is in trouble, and I thought I could keep you safe, but your dad is right, it’s too dangerous.”
“Last time I checked, I knew how to use a gun, and not to mention Reaper, you’re the only person I trust with my life.”
He groaned and closed his eyes. “Abby, just for once, do what you're told.”
“Not till you tell me why.”
“Fine. I killed someone.” Many people wouldn’t have picked up on it. But I did. He was upset mentioning it.
“Who?” I had more questions, and it was now that I realized he was called the Reaper for a reason. Hearing he killed someone didn’t sit well with me, but I knew this type of life led you in dirty directions. And Reaper was the Reaper for a reason. No one killed like him.
“A man's wife.”
I blinked and blinked again. “So you killed someone like me?” As I said it out loud, my body twisted in concern.
“Yes, and now the man wants blood, and he will be after your blood if he finds out you exist.”
“So you killed a woman.” I don’t know how it sat with me. “On purpose.”
He went silent and just stared at me, rocking back and forth on his heels. “You know who I am, Abby. You always knew what I did.”
“Still, that didn’t mean I knew you were killing women!”
“It wasn’t like that, Abby, do you honestly think I would kill women if I had a choice? She had to be shown you don’t fuck with the club, and her man needed to learn to fear Satan’s Sons.” He grabbed my arms and pulled me up to stand in front of him. “Abby, I wouldn’t have done it if I knew it would get you in trouble.”
“That’s just it, Reaper,” Tears swelled in my eyes. “You didn’t even think about how this would impact you. That this man would want you dead. If someone killed me, you would go on a manhunt.”
“Which is why I need to clean up the loose ends.”
“You mean find him and kill him.” I arched my eyebrows and wiped away angry tears.
“Abby, it will only be a couple of months.”
“Only a couple of months.” I scoffed. “What about your child, have you thought about him or her?”
“Abby, once this man is dead, it will all be sorted.”
“I thought I’d be safe with you.”
“I’m going to be on the road hunting this cunt down. You are safe here with your dad. He won’t let anyone hurt you.”
“Don’t you get it, Reaper? There is only one person hurting me,” I pushed him in the chest, “and that’s you.”
I wiped away more tears and then pushed him fully away. I needed time to think. I needed fresh air. I walked out of the room, closing the door behind me.
Chapter 41
Abby
I had been up all night, and I hadn’t gone to bed yet. Reaper was giving me distance, and I knew that. Still, what he did didn’t sit well with me. What if someone decided to kill me just to teach him a lesson? Didn’t he realize the danger he had put me and our child in?
I knew being with a President was hard. I knew there would be times I would take the back seat and the clu
b would come first. I guess this was one of those times. Still, the idea of Reaper on a manhunt to kill this man just blew my mind.
Which was why I was standing here.
I softly knocked on the door and then cracked it open, poking my head out. “Dad, are you awake?”
He groaned, and I took that as a yes. It was a little after three in the morning.
“Abby, what do you want?” Dad flicked on his bedside lap and sat up in bed.
“It’s about Reaper.”
“Guessing he told you then.”
I sighed nervously. “Yeah, he did.”
“So you understand it is best you stay here.”
“Yeah, I understand.” I sat on the edge of his bed. “And I will on one condition.”
His eyebrows rose. “You have a condition, do you?”
“Yep.”
“And it is?”
“You go with him.”
“Fuck, Abby.”
“Come on, Dad, he can’t do this by himself, and if you are with him, you might be able to keep him in line. I don’t want this turning into an all-out war over something he did.”
“It already is a war, and how do you expect me to be looking after you if I go with him?”
“The club will look after me. No one will know I’m here, and Brad can stay.”
“No.”
“Dad, please.”
“Reaper won't want me going.”
“He will if it gets me to stay here.”
“I’ll think about it.”
I sighed. “Fine.”
I dangled my legs over the side of the bed and found myself dwelling on the same question that had been haunting me all night since Kade told me.
“Dad, just one more thing.”
“Yeah, sweetheart?”
“This woman that Reaper killed, did she deserve it?”
“Abby, there are some people in this world that don’t deserve to breathe. If it makes you feel better, she was one of them.”
“All because she was with a criminal.”
“No, not just that. I’d tell you more, but it’s club business and as far as I am concerned, you only need to know that the woman deserved it, and her husband is a sick twisted fuck that will get what he deserves as well.”
