The Power of 3 Page 13

by Robb Hiller

I was a little giddy just being at the conference and watching all the awards given out to others. When the emcee announced the winner of the Bill Bonnstetter Lifetime Achievement Award, I heard my name. Pam was awash with tears as the host asked me to step up to the podium. Standing at the microphone, I was dumbfounded, but as I returned to my seat, I looked up and said, “Thank you, God. Wow!”

After everything we had endured that year, this was an incredible honor. The award cemented in me the desire and obligation to do something more with my second chance at living.

  My Journey Today

The journey continues. There are the normal struggles. Adversity never leaves us, and it can walk through our door at any time. However, I know the difference in dealing with the inevitable trials and challenges with the Power of 3, an approach born in business that was instrumental in helping me make it through the toughest time of my life. Most important, my students and clients over the years have experienced similar success in their areas of need. And this can be the same for you!

I no longer need to return to the doctor every three months for a PET scan and blood work. I recently had my two-year checkup, and again my hematologist was unusually upbeat. As he put my latest PET scan up on the big screen, he said, “Robb, your scan is perfect. You no longer have any cancer. Everything is normal.”

And then my doctor said, “I don’t know if you believe in God, but . . .” Pam interrupted his sentence—“We sure do!” The doctor just smiled. He had made his point as he sent us on our way.

I am living differently today, with a renewed zest for life and thankfulness for each day. I am learning to live again. I get a wonderful opportunity to become a better person—a better listener, a better husband, and a better father. When I stumble, I just look up and remember the power of the triangle as I learn to ask, activate, and advocate with the gift of family, friends, and my faith.

So what about you? What are you facing today? What is your best next step? And how might you help a friend or coworker?

The Power of 3 can improve anyone’s life. It can help you lead effectively, build trust, be a rock star coach, and overcome adversity so you can live with joy. Living in the triangle will give you strength daily.

So as we end our time together and you begin to live in the Power of 3 triangle, I have three prayers for you:

May you learn to better lead with the heart by asking the right, life-giving questions.

May you discover and activate more of your gifts and talents, thriving as you do what comes naturally.

And as you become an advocate for your friends and family and live out your faith, may you develop deeper relationships fundamental to living a life where the final words you hear will be “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

To my support team at Tyndale, a great team of consummate professionals who helped bring the message of the Power of 3 into a book: All of you are such a delight to work with. Thank you!

To my medical caregivers: Thank you, Fairview Southdale Hospital doctors and nurses. You are an amazing group of caring people who truly put me first and made a huge difference in my recovery. Thank you to all the nurses and doctors for your expertise, which helped me survive and eventually thrive.

To family, friends, and business encouragers: A big hug to all of you for your prayers, calls, and practical deeds of kindness. I also thank Michael Palgon and Jim Lund for their ideas for the book, their outline, and their expertise.
