“Wonderful,” she said, and kissed his cheek.

Aubrey squirmed from his mother’s grasp and threw himself on Clare. “An’ Clare stay!” he sobbed.

Clarissa bent to pat his back. “Don’t cry, poppet. Mama will bring you to visit us soon.”

Sinjin knelt beside the boy. “Come now, my man, bear up. Besides, what you need is not Aunt Clare, but a little cousin to play soldiers with whenever you wish.” Ignoring the kick Clarissa gave his knee, he continued, “Does that not sound like a good battle plan?”

Aubrey raised brilliant green eyes to him, apparently considering the notion, and then bobbed his head. “Aubrey want now.”

Sinjin laughed. “I shall do my best. Come, Clare, let’s be off. I fear this young fellow is impatient.”

“So am I.” The smoldering look his bride gave him sent a burst of heat through his veins that owed nothing to the liberal quantities of champagne he’d imbibed.

“How fortunate,” he rasped as he handed her into the coach, “that we’re traveling in a closed carriage.”

She glanced at him over her shoulder. “Why do you think I ordered one?”

After a final wave to the wedding guests, he settled beside her and let down the shade. “Ah,” he murmured as he leaned over to help her unlace the fastenings of her satin gown, “the benefits of choosing a most improper wife.”
