  She blew the hair out of her face. “You’re the most annoying man.”

  Kolten touched her face. “You’re beautiful.”

  Leanna woke her up the next morning. “You must wake up and see what the day has planned for us.”

  Amber slowly got out of bed and dressed.

  The girls went down the steps and stopped. Keith stood at the bottom with two children. He looked up at Leanna.

  “From this day forward, you’re to be their mother. Nobody outside this castle knows of my children and they never shall. I’ve too many enemies out there and my children’s lives mean more to me then anything. I’ve kept them hidden for years.”

  Leanna looked at the two lovely little girls. She wondered where their mother was. They had to have been only six. She’d never seen twins, but had heard of them.

  “This is Molly and Morgan. Now, girls, you’re to call her mama in public and around everyone else.” They shyly nodded their heads.

  Leanna moved closer to them. ”Have you eaten your breakfast?”

  They shook their heads. Keith pulled Leanna to the side. “They don’t speak, lass. They witnessed their mother’s hanging. Since that day, they do not speak to anyone.”

  She saw the sadness in his eyes and it touched her heart. “I’ll care for them as if they’re my own, Keith, this I promise you.”

  Leanna grabbed the girl’s hands and took them in to eat.

  Amber looked at Keith. “What about me? What am I supposed to do?”

  Keith watched them leave the room. “I do not know, lass. You must speak to Kolten, since he’s in charge of you.”

  Keith left the room. Amber stood there fuming. Nobody was in charge of her. She was her own person. She heard laughter and turned to see Kolten standing in the shadows.

  “You do not like being told I’m in charge of you, do you?”

  She cleared her throat. “What am I supposed to do? Do you have a slew of children around here, too?”

  He let out a deep chuckle. “Do you think I just lie with all the women, or does it make you jealous to think I have?”

  She was in no mood to be teased. “What do you want from me, Kolten?”

  Moving closer to her, he touched her face. “Lass, you know what I want.”

  Amber stepped back. “I’m not a whore, Kolten. I would rather die than become one. I don’t, nor will I ever, belong to a harem.”

  He grabbed her hand. “I do not want you to be a whore, dear one. You can only be a whore if you tup with many men. You will only be mine.”

  His words sent a chill to her bones. Something stirred inside her. “Do you think you can just conquer me like you do villages? Take possession of something that does not belong to you?”

  Kolten pulled her to him. “You’re a hellcat, lass. You tell me one thing but your body says something different.”

  “Kolten, don’t do this.”

  His kiss deepened and his hands ran through her hair. Her body responded to his touch even as fear flowed through her veins. She broke free of his grasp and ran.

  Masias watched as his sons left for the north village. The messengers had arrived late morning to tell him of the burned villages. Kolten and Keith rode out soon afterwards.

  It was late that evening when Amber was awakened by screams. She ran into the hallways and was greeted by Goathers. They grabbed her as they had Leanna and the girls.

  Masias was tied up to a chair and had been badly beaten. Bess lay on the floor at his feet. No doubt she’d tried to care for him.

  The girls were tied and taken out of the castle. Leanna looked at Amber. “We must take care of them.”

  They traveled till they reached a camp in a clearing. The man that grabbed Amber walked back with another man. “Tobias, look what we found.”

  Tobias shoved the man to the ground. “We don’t take their women and children. We take their lives, we take their riches.”

  The man stood back up. “Tobias, I was told these are their wives.”

  He shoved Leanna toward Tobias. “’Tis Keith’s wife and children.”

  Next, he shoved Amber. ‘Tis Kolten’s wife.”

  Tobias looked at Amber. “I’ve never liked Kolten.” He ran a finger across her breast. “It disgusts me to think he has touched you.” He reared back and slapped her across the face. Amber fell to the ground.

  The little girls began to cry. “We know that these are not her daughters. They belonged to Francine and we hung her, leaving her body for her husband to see.”

  Leanna covered their ears. “They’re just children.”

  Tobias grabbed Leanna by the back of her hair and pulled her close. “So, he has taken a new bride?”

  Leanna stayed silent. She knew it was best to keep quiet. The girls cried and held on to her dress. “Do anything you wish to me, but please, leave the girls alone. They’re just children.”

  He liked the side of her face. “You disgust me. You smell of him. You’re nothing but a whore and whores should die.”

  Amber jumped up. “She’s not a whore.”

  The other Goathers grabbed her. “Tie them to the tree.”

  Amber and Leanna were tied to the trees, stretched out like on a cross.

  One of the other Goathers approached Tobias. “What are we going to do with them, Tobias?”

  Tobias grabbed one of the women. “Now we feast. I’ll worry about them later.”

  They walked off and joined the crowd around the fire, where women danced naked while men groped them.

  The children hung on to Leanna’s dress. “It’s all right, girls. I’m fine.” They continued crying, shielding their eyes with her skirts, blocking their view.

  Gunner didn’t get the contact until they were halfway gone, and then quickly rode to meet Kolten and Keith. They rode back to the castle in a hurry.

  Keith untied his father and carried him to his room while Kolten grabbed Bess.

  Masias looked at his eldest son. “They took them, Keith. We never knew what hit us. I was grabbed out of my sleep. Keith, they took the children, they took Leanna and Amber. They think the girls are your wives.”

  Keith called for Gunner to care for his father and Bess, and then met Kolten in the hallway.

  “We ride ‘til we find them.” Kolten followed Keith out.

  Sometime during the feast, Tobias walked back over to the girls. The children had cried themselves to sleep at Leanna’s feet.

  Tobias slapped Amber across the face, grabbed a knife and tore at her dress. It fell off her shoulders and stopped at her waist. Tobias licked his lips.

  Amber tried not to stir. The last thing she wanted was to wake the children and let their young eyes see what he was doing.

  Tobias grabbed his knife and stuck it to her chest. “I should cut you up and leave you for the animals.”

  She didn’t speak even when he cut her hands free and she fell to the ground. Tobias grabbed her by the hair and took her to the banks o
f the river. Throwing her on the ground, he fell on top of her, pinning her down. She thought for sure he would rape her, but he began to hit her, over and over, until she passed out, falling into the waves.

  Queen Verde stared into the glass. “No, this can not happen! She cannot die.”

  She closed her eyes and sprinkled some dust over the ball. “Come, Kolten.”

  Kina, the queen in training, heard the queen’s demand. She immediately flew to find the human. Locating her, she pulled the girl with all her might. When she was unable to move her, she called on some of her sisters to help. They could not let Queen Verde down. She had always been good to their people, making sure they went unharmed. The queen’s orders were not to let the human die. With all their might, they pulled ‘til she reached the shore. The small fairy moved to the woman’s face and blew air into her lungs. The others kept watch. The knights were not allowed to see them.

  Kina was alerted they were coming, and rose to leave. “Take care.” She kissed the young girl on the lips and flew off.

  Kolten pulled his horse to a stop and dismounted. “We need to search the river.”

  Keith, still worried for his daughters, stared at his brother. “Kolten, we must ride. They’ll have a campfire and we must find them before they hurt my daughters. Before they rape and kill Amber and Leanna.”

  “Keith, I don’t know what it is, but something tells me to go the river.”

  Keith followed Kolten, as did the other knights.

  Kolten rode along the shoreline. He was about to turn around when he saw Amber’s lifeless form lying half on the shore, the other half in the lake’s cold waters. He jumped off his horse and ran to her. Her body was cold, the top of her dress was torn off and her face was bruised. He hid her near-naked body from the others. “Keith, throw me some covers.”

  Keith reached in his pack and threw his brother something to cover her with. Kolten pulled her to the shore. “They have beaten her.”

  Keith looked at the knights. “We must camp for the night. Take watch.”

  He didn’t want to stop the search, but only Amber knew the answer to the whereabouts of the Goathers. Kolten took her around where none of the knights were. He took the clothes out of his sack. The chambermaids had packed an extra dress in case the girls needed them. He removed her old dress, noticing the rope marks on her wrists. She’d been tied up. Her breast had a cut, probably from where the dress had been cut off her. Rage boiled inside him. He would find the man or men and kill them with his bare hands for touching her, for hurting her.

  Once he got her changed, he covered her in a blanket and laid her down. He washed the caked blood off her face.

  Amber awakened slowly and began to scream. Kolten tried to hold her, and she belted him in the lip. Then he held her arms down. “Amber, 'tis I, Kolten.”

  Her eyes widened and focused on him. When she finally grasped where she was, she grabbed onto his neck, holding him.

  “Lass, you’re fine.”

  She kept crying. He held her away from him. “Who did this to you?”

  “Tobias.”

  Just the name sent Keith in a rage. He grabbed his gear and mounted his horse.

  Kolten jumped up. “We must go. Can you travel?”

  She removed the blanket. “My clothes, who...”

  He helped her up. “I did, lass. You were near death.”

  She folded the blanket. Keith rode up. “Did you get crass with him? Did you anger him so much he tried to kill you? Where are my girls? Where is Leanna?”

  “Keith, calm down.”

  “I didn’t say anything to him. He beat me because he thought I was Kolten’s wife. He believes Leanna is Keith’s wife. I would never do anything to harm your girls, Keith. I kept quiet. Someone told him I was Kolten’s wife.”

  Keith turned his horse around and rode off. Kolten cupped her face. “I’m sorry you were beaten because of me. I’ll make sure those involved pay heavily for this.”

  Kolten yelled out. “Gunner, come here.”

  Gunner rode up. “I want you to ride with Gunner. If something happens, he can and will keep you safe.”

  “Kolten, there are so many of them.”

  He touched her face. “I’ll be fine.”

  He rode off after his brother.

  Leanna felt a hand cover her mouth.

  “Shh, don’t say anything.”

  She saw the knights grab the girls and run to the forest.

  The ropes were freed from her wrists and she fell into his arms. “You will be fine.”

  She was carried away and placed with the girls. They both flew in her arms, frightened to death. Gunner rode up with Amber and the two sisters hugged.

  “He told me you were dead.”

  Amber kept hugging her sister. “I’m fine, Kolten found me in time.”

  Tobias was grabbed out of his sleep, a rope was placed around his neck and he was hoisted above the ground. He didn’t even have time to struggle. Keith’s sword cut him down, head and all.

  The other Goathers fought, too, but they were no match for Masias’s army. Things that had been stolen were reclaimed. The women were unharmed and ran once the fighting started.

  After the last of the Goathers fell, Keith went back for his girls. They ran to their father.

  At that time, he didn’t care who saw them.

  Kolten opened the back of the wagon. “Put them in here, Keith. We must get back to the castle to check on Father.”

  Keith helped Leanna in. Before he closed it, he grabbed her hand. “You took care of them. You put their lives before yours. This I’ll never forget.”

  She smiled as he shut the tarp.

  Kolten reached for Amber’s hand. “You ride with me.”

  She didn’t argue with him for once, merely grabbed his hand and he pulled her up in front of him.

  Sometime during the ride back, Amber fell asleep, and Kolten carried her in the castle, laying her in his chambers. Leanna didn’t say a word as he carried Amber to his room. She carried Morgan to her room so she could sleep. Keith laid Molly down with her sister. “I hate that they’ve seen so much, been through so much. They’ll never speak again if this continues.”

  Leanna touched his arm. “They know of your love, Keith, and that ‘tis what keeps them alive. In time, they’ll speak.”

  He stood up. “Thank you, Leanna, I’m forever grateful to you.”

  Leanna climbed in the bed with the girls and fell asleep.

  Chapter Ten

  Queen Verde became giddy. “Wake up, Amber, turn to him, put your head on his chest.”

  Kira sat across from her. “Why did you take her memories, then send her right back to him?”

  The queen continued staring into the glass ball. “They’re destined to be together. 'Tis such a romantic tale of these two. See, long before you came here, dear one, I played with these two. These two lovers have been my pawns for many many years. I do it because I can, and I rather enjoy it. Now, wake up, Amber.”

  Amber stirred in her sleep, obviously bothered by bad dreams

  Amber looked into his eyes. “Kolten, I’ve never been

  He slowly sat up, pulling her with him. Amber looked down.

  Kolten lifted her face. “What ‘tis wrong, lass?”

  Amber looked up into his eyes. “My face is horrible-looking. Look at me.”

  Kolten kissed the side of her face, her forehead, her chin, then her lips. “You’re perfect to me.”
