Knuckle Balled

“Eldritch?” I whispered. “Is that you?”

  Then they hung up.

I stared at the phone for a bit and listened to the dial tone, until finally the speaker started barking loudly. It echoed all the way down the drainage pipe behind me and rang in my ears like the fiddle of that shitty, allegedly homophobic bluegrass band. I wanted to get up. I wanted to walk outside into the sun and burn my body into a hard coyote turd on the Mexican sand. But, I just sat on my wet ass and put my face in my hands.

LooKs like we arEn’T geTTinG hIgh foR a loooOong timE.

“Leave me alone!” I screamed and I smashed my fist into the curved wall of the cement pipe, completely bloodying and shattering my knuckles.

I took a second look at the hand. The fingers went limp and pieces of bone snowed down from the open gashes. I licked the blood flow and spit the bone fragments out.

That hand would never be one hundred percent again, I decided.

And then, I looked at the screen again and dialed the only other phone number that I knew. I was sure to add “00” to the beginning of the number. It was obvious to me that I wasn’t in Austin anymore.

  00-1-855-BROSKIZ.

  It rang.

  It rang twice.

  It rang three times.

  Finally, someone picked up.

“BroSkiz, your number one jet ski rental choice for Lake Travis and Austin,” the voice cheered.

I cleared my throat. “I’m in a ditch. In Mexico.”

Cody yawned loudly into the phone. “Hilarious. You got dicks on your face?”
