Rebooting the American Dream
11 Ways to Rebuild Our Country
For years the Right has been tampering with one of the best political operating systems ever designed. The result has been economic and environmental disaster. Here Thom Hartmann outlines eleven common-sense proposals, deeply rooted in America’s history, which will once again make America strong and all Americans—not corporations and billionaires—prosperous. Some of these ideas are controversial, but the litmus test for each is not political correctness but whether or not it serves to revitalize this country we all love and make life better for its citizens.

Unequal Protection
How Corporations Became “People”—and How You Can Fight Back
Unequal Protection tells the astonishing story of how an offhand comment by a Supreme Court justice in the mid-nineteenth century led to corporations being given the same rights as human beings. Hartmann outlines the destructive consequences and proposes specific legal remedies that will finally put an end to the bizarre farce of corporate personhood. This thoroughly updated edition features his analysis of recent landmark Supreme Court cases, including Citizens United.

Cracking the Code
How to Win Hearts, Change Minds, and Restore America’s Original Vision
How can we connect with the millions of Americans who have bought into the right-wing line? Drawing on his background as a psychotherapist, advertising executive, and radio host, Hartmann applies what science has learned about how people actually perceive information to give you the tools you need to make the progressive message even more compelling and persuasive.

Screwed
The Undeclared War Against the Middle Class—and What We Can Do About It
Starting with Ronald Reagan and accelerating under George W. Bush, American policy makers have waged an assault on the middle class, the very foundation of American democracy, as seen by the Founding Fathers. Hartmann chronicles this assault and recommends actions people can take to restore a prosperous middle class and keep America strong.

Berrett-Koehler is an independent publisher dedicated to an ambitious mission: Creating a World That Works for All .
We believe that to truly create a better world, action is needed at all levels—individual, organizational, and societal. At the individual level, our publications help people align their lives with their values and with their aspirations for a better world. At the organizational level, our publications promote progressive leadership and management practices, socially responsible approaches to business, and humane and effective organizations. At the societal level, our publications advance social and economic justice, shared prosperity, sustainability, and new solutions to national and global issues.
A major theme of our publications is “Opening Up New Space.” Berrett-Koehler titles challenge conventional thinking, introduce new ideas, and foster positive change. Their common quest is changing the underlying beliefs, mindsets, institutions, and structures that keep generating the same cycles of problems, no matter who our leaders are or what improvement programs we adopt.
We strive to practice what we preach—to operate our publishing company in line with the ideas in our books. At the core of our approach is stewardship, which we define as a deep sense of responsibility to administer the company for the benefit of all of our “stakeholder” groups: authors, customers, employees, investors, service providers, and the communities and environment around us.
We are grateful to the thousands of readers, authors, and other friends of the company who consider themselves to be part of the “BK Community.” We hope that you, too, will join us in our mission.

*The Edison gene, of course, is not just a single gene. As is true for all characteristics, particularly those having to do with personality, those related to the Edison gene are actually the result of a complex interaction of many genes. While there is one gene that’s been most often associated with what psychiatrists call ADHD—and this one is my best candidate for the Edison gene—there are many others that work with it in different configurations, shading its nuance and power to create the personality of an inventor, explorer, or entrepreneur.
* Reading Daniel Quinn’s novel Ishmael in 1995 brought Clark’s personal obsession into a clearer light for me.
* In everyday language the word morbid connotes “dying,” but in medical terms morbidity refers to how often something occurs, and comorbid refers to diagnoses that occur together.
*The Clinton administration’s ratification of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) (as well as numerous other “trade agreements” since then) made it possible to shift manufacturing and production jobs from the United States to the developing world. The American situation is mirrored throughout the world, as industrialized nations lose manufacturing jobs and developing countries become spotted with sweatshops like a child with measles. Humans require passports and visas to travel from nation to nation, but corporations can now move anywhere with virtually no restrictions.

*Again, the words in quotation marks are where, in the dissent, the justices themselves are quoting from previous Supreme Court rulings. I’ve removed all the reference citations, as they make it hard to read; anybody wanting to dive deeper into this 90-page dissent can read it online at www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/09pdf/08-205.pdf.
