“Should we go in?” I was almost afraid to ask but she nodded her head and practically jumped out of the car.

Walking in through an open door, I heard Waverly gasp and I was suddenly regretting our excursion. But her words quickly had me breathing a sigh of relief. “This is amazing! Nothing like it was when I lived here…”

“Come in and take a look around…the house…” The real estate agent rattled on about the house and I nodded while Waverly appeared to zone out.

I preferred Waverly’s input on the house. “It was closed off and all of the wood was painted white from the people before us…” Her voice trailed off.

There was nothing closed up about what was in front of our eyes. From the moment we stepped through the doorway we were hit with huge windows at the back of the house that looked out to Seattle and there was dark wood everywhere.

“We never had a swimming pool or wood deck like that. It was all pathways and gardens. It’s all so ultra-modern inside.” Waverly was touching everything like she was making sure it was all real. “My parents would’ve loved this. They always talked about updating everything but they were never in town long enough to do anything… Morgan your phone keeps ringing, answer it. I’m fine.”

I guess it was obvious that I was concerned about her reaction to everything while listening to her family-time stories. I was so happy that the changes hadn’t upset her and she seemed overjoyed to be in the house.

“Wanna see my bedroom?” She smiled in an almost naughty way. It could’ve also been wishful thinking on my part. “Read your messages and then follow me upstairs, last door on the left.”

Damn she was so cute! And damn, I had bad news…good news really.

When I walked into the room, I found her looking out the window and got close enough to see her view. “I have to fly down to Baja. There’s a big fishing competition. I never thought about deep sea fishing as a water sport… Not sure it’s right for the channel but a boat company is interested in a sponsorship deal… They have a private jet in the area—”

She cut me off, spinning around to face me and throwing her arms around me. “Oh my God, Morgan! It’s all coming together for you! That is so exciting!” I loved her reaction and never wanted to move from that spot in her childhood bedroom that had been made into a sitting room for the master bedroom.

“I’d ask you to come along but I know you have the wedding tomorrow.”

Shit! I was going to miss out on surprising her at the wedding. Every day with her for more hours than usual had been nice. Add in the non-working parts, it had been like old times, but new and mature along with getting to know far more about each other than the past. But the trip was a must! A huge boating company was not to be missed.

I was glad I went, stopping in San Diego to pick up some of my film crew guys who would stay down there to cover every event and do some interviews. Thanks to them, they were able to keep my mind off of Waverly a bit, but I kept thinking that she should’ve been there. I wanted her to know every aspect of the channel and I wanted her to give me her input.

It must’ve been obvious to the guy in charge of the event and instrumental to bringing me into the loop that my mind was often somewhere else.

  “Who is this Waverly?”

And maybe the fact that I brought her name up in conversation, giving her credit for ideas she came up with. Not one to take credit due away from someone, especially her, I told him all about her and probably more than I should’ve to a business connection.

“I want to meet this Waverly… And I’m guessing you would like to get back to her…” He paused as if he was weighing my reaction but I quickly launched into damage control. I couldn’t afford to fuck things up that early in the game.

“Shit! I’m so sorry. I promise you that I am more professional. Liquid Rush—”

“Nonsense, my boy.” He sounded like my father. “I know how women fuck with our minds and bodies…” He grinned. “This Waverly sounds like an asset to Liquid Rush TV. I want to meet her when I’m back in San Diego in a few weeks… I also want you to get in my helicopter and head back to the airport. I take it she’s waiting for you?”

“Not exactly. I was going to surprise her at a wedding…”

“Oh! Then you definitely have to go. Weddings and romantic encounters go hand in hand.” He roared with laughter and told me a story of his own before sending me off…back up to Seattle.

Just as I thought, Waverly was shocked to see me walking up to her sitting just off to the side of the dance floor, sipping champagne.

“Hey! What are you doing here? What happened with your deal?”

“My crew stayed to film… I needed to get back to you. I know how you women get at weddings. Lovey stuff, wedding cake and with just enough liquid courage you spread your legs easily. And if I’m not mistaken, you’re ripe for the picking.” I had a smug look on my face as I pulled her up from her chair and she didn’t even reprimand me.

“You might get lucky.” That was Waverly’s response and though I was surprised, it was the right time to take full advantage of the situation.

“Tell me you’re not drunk.” She smiled and shook her head. I’m not sure if I had ever wanted her so bad. I just needed to get her all to myself. “Good!” I said, guiding her away for some private time.

“Hey! Where are you taking me? We can’t leave yet…cake…garter…bouquet.” She was rattling off several different reasons we had to stay.

“I’m not taking you too far away. You won’t miss anything. I promise.”

Not fighting me, she was willingly coming away with me from the loud party music and other guests to a spot I remembered when I first walked through the banquet hall to the lively room. Nothing was going to stand in my way…or so I thought.

“Look at you! The last time I saw you, Mav—besides the presentation—you had long bleached out blond hair, a bronzed tan and were defending your cage.” Joseph wrapped his arm around my shoulders and squeezed me, making me laugh.

“Hey! What was wrong with that look? I was the picture of health.” I refuted Joseph’s comment.

“This is a better look. Handsome… Business man attire too. A suit…dress shoes… I like it. About time you grew up and joined the rest of us.” Joseph had an unmistakable proudness in his voice, but all I wanted was to get Waverly alone.

I wondered why she exclaimed, “ah-ha!” when Joseph smiled and kissed her cheek. I wanted to ask her but decided to wait until Joseph had moved on to greet more people. He was like an ambassador, everyone knew him and he seemed to know just about everyone in return.

“What did you discover?” I asked quietly as I gently grasped her elbow and moved her completely out of the reception hall to a quiet foyer.

“You know Joseph. He called you Maverick… Well, at least Mav…” Her tone was like an accusation but not directed at me.

“Yes, he’s one of my father’s oldest friends. They go way back in business. Cut from the same cloth. Real go-getters. He and his wife Katherine were at our home from time to time and they saw me play water polo when they were in Europe a few years back.”

“And he conveniently invited you to the wedding.” She sounded like a sleuth trying to piece together a whodunit mystery.

“No, actually, I know the bride…” I paused understanding what she was getting at. “So you think Joseph is playing matchmaker with us?” She nodded her beautiful head looking up at me with her dazzling dark brown eyes. “Who cares if he is or thinks he is…I’m all for us being together.” My hands had tenderly worked their way to both sides of her pretty face. “If he wants you for me and me for you, I say yes.”

I didn’t give her time to respond since my mouth crashed over hers.

  Chapter Nineteen

  Waverly

My heart thumped wildly in my chest like it had the first time Morgan kissed me and, suddenly, I didn’t care about the wedding at all. However, I wasn’t sure I was thrilled about where he was taking me
.

“Seriously?! A coat check closet? That only happens in cinema.”

“It’s happening for real…right now! I’ve waited long enough for you, Waverly, and we got lucky…it’s not locked…get in.”

Another quick kiss from his wonderful lips convinced me to obey his command as we ducked inside and went all the way to the back.

Crammed behind rows and rows of coats that must’ve belonged to other events as well, we panted words as we fumbled to get our clothes off. “I need to feel your skin on my body. Everything off!” I wasn’t sure that was such a smart thing on his part—too many clothes in a rush to cover up—if anyone was in need of their belongings. For me, I only needed to step back into my dress.

  This spells disaster, Waverly.

Better yet, we should’ve left or waited, but there was no stopping us. Not even my logical brain made a dent in my decisions. Frantic movements was the best way to describe our actions. His hands were caressing my tingling body that wanted him everywhere all at once. His breath on my skin had my nipples jutting out wanting his full attention. His touch caused an aching sensation that settled between my thighs…and talk about a liquid rush—I was so ready for him.

Oh my God, Waverly, how could you equate those words with your arousal? How will you not think about sex when you talk about Liquid Rush TV?

Amazingly Morgan remembered my needs and quickly did his best to take care of my desires. “You’re so beautiful, Waverly.” I loved his whispered words before his mouth captured mine and his talented hands started to work their magic, slipping down my goose-bumped torso. Dancing his fingers over my soft slipperiness, circling my tiny bundle of nerves and sailing inside of me to release all tension from my body.

I struggled to stand and think clearly after erupting under his touch. Although there was no reason to worry about collapsing. Morgan’s strong arms had me lifted off my feet as I found my back up against the wall.

“Please tell me you’re on birth control.”

  “Please tell me you’re clean.”

We both moaned “yes” as I wrapped my legs around his waist and he swiftly entered me. “Oh so good!” Morgan uttered in a groan over and over as he thrusted his powerful hips. I’m not sure what my words were when he hit spots inside of me that sent electrifying shocks through my body. Soaring higher and higher, his words were soothing. “Let go, baby. That’s it. I’ve got you.”

Pinned by his strength, I could barely move which was perfectly fine as I enjoyed the wild ride as he filled me completely. “Yes, Morgan” was the last thing I remembered saying before his mouth was over mine silencing me as we raced to the grand finale that would’ve surely had us both screaming out in pleasure. His volatile orgasm met one of my last ones perfectly as we finished on a high and clung to each other. In a closet was the last place I wished to be with him but then again I never wanted to leave the security of my body being wrapped around his as he held me.

We couldn’t have finished more timely as we heard someone on the other side of the door struggling with the handle that Morgan had locked. “This is strange. I didn’t lock the door. Sorry, Mr. Anderson, I’ll have to go find keys.”

Waverly, you’re going to be caught with your panties around your ankles.

“Oh my God. Of all people to catch us in a closet together.” How the hell were we going to get out of that mess I thought as we scrambled to find our clothes on the floor. Thankfully with the help of the flashlight on Morgan’s phone we were able to dress quickly.

“Don’t worry, we’ll just say we got locked in…” I shook my head in the darkness. “Or we hide out until they get their coats and then sneak out… Maybe it’s another Mr. Anderson.” I hoped he was right on that last count.

No such luck. When the door opened and the lights came on, the girl found us but she was cool about it as Morgan put a finger to his lips. I would’ve been quiet too if I was her staring at a gorgeous man with sparkling blue-green eyes. She was not our problem…or accuser…or whatever you wanted to name the person that called us out. She actually helped us slip out behind the turned backs of the Andersons, but we weren’t quite stealth enough, knocking into a rack.

Way to go, Miss Clumsy Waverly and your hot accomplice!

“Something tells me, Joseph…” A smiling Katherine had turned to the slight commotion and spoke up holding onto Joseph’s arm, cuddled up closely. “…we won’t be seeing these two at the family barbecue.”

There we stood like we had been caught red-handed for a beat before we said goodnight and headed back inside the reception hall laughing all the way. After the embarrassment, I relaxed into the arms of Morgan on the dance floor. It was the first time I had danced with him and I loved that he enjoyed moving to music. It wasn’t always easy to find a man willing to dance. I was finding so many things about him charming again.

He showed me another side of my own city. He cooked with me and surprised me with chocolate. He supported me in business. He wanted me to be a partner in his new endeavor. He took me to my family home. He came back to be with me at the wedding. And, most importantly, he didn’t force me to talk about our past though he often spoke openly about things.

I knew that our past was going to catch up with me soon enough. We had moved into a different phase…a more intimate one. There was no escaping. Not that I wanted to, I just preferred to stay in a happy state for as long as possible.

“Ready to go?” Morgan asked the minute wedding cake hit my lips and I laughed with a nod. The vanilla cream treat was delicious but I was ready for more yumminess that had nothing to do with food and required fewer clothes.

I didn’t say no or make an excuse, but instead stood up, grabbed my clutch bag from the heavily decorated table and put my hand in his. Cars were at the ready in the driveway outside the lobby of the hotel and we quickly grabbed one for ourselves. Not far from the Anderson Tower, we were in my apartment in no time at all.

Though our clothes came off immediately, Morgan’s words contained no demands and his movements were slow and gentle. “I can’t get enough of you. I’ve missed your taste on my tongue.”

I quivered as he scooped me up in his muscular arms and moved me to the king-sized bed he had been denied access. With the moonlight filling the room from a large window, I watched his lush lips skim over my skin. Stopping to nip, lick and suck in key areas, I moaned and lifted my body to show him my approval. My nipples were delighted with his attention and sent a tingling sensation straight south where it appeared Morgan was heading.

Never disappointed by any of his moves, I enjoyed the way his mouth covered my lower lips and brought me over the edge. With no one on the other side of the walls or doors, I freely moaned and chanted as ripples waved through every nerve in my body.

“More. More. More,” seemed to echo around the room. But then I realized that it may have been Morgan’s voice repeating my words as his face leveled with mine.

When he was inside of me, locking his beautiful blue-green eyes with mine, it felt like a whole new beginning mixed in with the past. I could hear words from the past coming from his lips. As he moved inside of me and kissed me tenderly, I was lost in time to Maverick and Morgan. It was at that moment that they seemed to come together as one for me.

I also knew that once we shared another mutual release with emotions so high, a conversation about us was ominous… Maybe not the right word. Maybe auspicious was a better word for what was coming. I was afraid to hear unhappy things about our past. Opening old wounds was not what should follow the best sex of your life, but there was no denying it would happen knowing Morgan.

And just as I suspected, lying comfortably cuddled up next to Morgan’s body, he launched in. “When you told me you were engaged it made me crazy. The idea of you married to anyone but me nearly crippled me. How could you dream of your life with anyone else?” I had thought he would jump to the past first instead of my silly decision to invent a fake fiancé.

  “It was my way
of keeping some distance between us. You scared me. I was scared of myself. I thought it was the best solution.”

“You ruined me for life. If I couldn’t have you, I didn’t want anyone. Not saying there weren’t women but they were nothing more than a distraction to scratch an itch. There was no one in our bed ever. I didn’t even touch another woman for at least six months—when I finally gave up hope of you returning to me… How could you just walk away and leave me?” His words shocked me.

  He’s blaming you, Waverly.

“I…I…had to protect my…my heart. You…you broke it once…and it…it took me a long time to get over you…and then… Then you showed up…up again…and—”

“What do you mean I broke your heart? I asked you to stay forever…to come back to me after you finished your trip and you never did. If anyone’s heart was crushed it was mine.” My chest ached as I listened to him.

“You…you didn’t mean…mean it. I was just one of your roommates. One…one just left before you reeled…reeled me in. You didn’t tell me your real name. Maverick was what you used for your groupies. If you were really into me you would’ve told me your name was Morgan. You didn’t. Code between you and your fellow players—”

His voice was raised a bit and he had moved to face me as he cut me off. “Code? What gave you that idea? I used the name Maverick with everyone when I was in Europe. It was a nickname based on my recklessness like a cocky pilot in a movie. Nothing more.”

“But…but they told me… They talked about other girls. They said—”

Again his tone was not a happy one. “They? Who is they? Whoever told you anything about me not wanting you had no fucking idea what they were talking about. I fell in love with you the first day I met you.”

I felt love for him the moment I saw him too, but it didn’t seem real and I chalked it up as a summer romance in the end. “We were…too…too young…and…and even if I would’ve returned…it probably wouldn’t have lasted.”
