Unsidhe Assassin (Darkly Mine Season 1)

“But if the Crown prince was a changeling, then he was human.”
“Got it in one.”
“So who swapped him?”
“Her lover, as she’d cast him aside, deciding she loved her consort too much to continue the affair. And since it was her lover’s son who spilled the beans that the Queen had been duped and was carrying on a charade, she decided my father had been the one to tell me what he’d done and that my misguided youth led me to prattle about it.”
“Your father?” I asked horrified. “Oh, my god. So, does he know where the baby is?”
Willow shook his head. “The assassin he contracted was tasked to not reveal it to anyone, even the guild. He died a few months later of food poisoning after taking part in a raw meat eating challenge.”
“Ewww. Wait, does this mean a human is going to inherit the throne?”
“He can’t. It requires magic, or the Crown won’t accept you. It’s why only a High Fae can rule. The Crown requires a fae with a lot of magic to rule as the king or queen literally oversees all the magic in the kingdom, and the magic they channel lets them know if the realm is in danger.”
“Well, shit. Can’t she have another kid?”
Willow shook his head. “Another of her extended line or someone who takes it from her will rule.”
My eyes widened as he full import of what he was alluding to hit me. Someone who takes it.
“Holy shit. You’re after the Crown.”
He grinned at me as the carriage stopped in front of our building, his fangs flashing. He lifted my hand, turning it over. He kissed my wrist, then nipped it. “We are after it. I shall rule, with you as my assassin and official consort.”
Damn. It looked like we had not only jumped from the fire into the frying pan, but I just might have found my way up from being so far at the bottom of their society. From the top, I might be able to see far enough to figure the rest of my way out. I knew there was something else important he hadn’t told me yet. I also knew I’d get it out of him later.
He lapped the blood on my wrist, sealing the wound.
“You best let me in on the rest of the plan,” I said. I wanted to not only survive but to win. “After a victory fuck,” I added. “A successful mission always makes me horny.”
He laughed. “Oh, that can be arranged.”
We exited the carriage, running towards the guards rushing at us, urging us inside with shouts. The news of the consort’s death had spread quickly and crowds of fae were taking to the streets and it wouldn’t take ANR long to send reporters to track us down. We ran inside, the guards closing ranks around us, hurrying into the elevator. Up we went, higher and higher. There would no stopping us until we had the Crown.
