Blade looked around. As his gaze fell on something, a wide grin spread across his face. “That’ll do.”

“What?” Joelle watched him stroll toward a pile of dead limbs. “Oh no.” She rose to her hands and knees then stood up. “You are not spanking me with a tree branch.”

Blade dug through the pile and pulled out a twig the size of a yardstick. He ran his hands over the wood. “It’s pretty smooth, Joelle. It won’t feel any different than the paddle did.”

“The paddle was leather, not wood.” Joelle backed up against the brick wall. Anticipation shot through her as Blade advanced toward her. She could barely take a full breath. The heady excitement of being paddled by him with the twig surprised her.

“Leather stings more than wood.” Blade pressed up against her, pinning her against the brick. “Now, are you going to be a good girl and turn around, or do I have to tie you to this wall?”

Joelle felt light-headed. She’d never been this excited about anything. “You have nothing to tie me with, Blade.”

A wicked grin spread across his face as he backed up a few steps. “You’d be surprised what I can conjure up if I want to.”

An image of him snapping his fingers and having handcuffs or long pieces of silk appear flitted through her mind. Nothing about this man would surprise her at this point. She turned toward the wall and her put hands against it. Every nerve ending was on fire. The anticipation alone was enough to make her pussy contract.

Blade touched her ass with the tree branch, and Joelle yelped then felt foolish when she realized all he’d done was caress her. He ran his hand gently over her back. “Ready?”

  “I don’t know. I think so.”

He put one arm around her from behind and kissed her neck. “All you have to do is say stop, and I stop.” Then he took a step back and struck her across both cheeks.

It stung, but he was right about the wood versus leather. It didn’t bite the way the paddle had, but it still caused pain. Blade hit her a few more times, and she squirmed. He moved closer to her and wrapped one arm around her torso to hold her still. “I don’t want to accidentally hit your legs if you happen to move the wrong way.”

His hand moved up to her right breast and cupped it. Blade’s arm held her in place firmly, and being restrained like that excited Joelle even further. She moaned as he started to paddle her again. He teased her breast as he did so, and the combined sensations were enough to push Joelle over the edge. She squeezed her thighs together as her pussy contracted, but it wasn’t quite enough to bring on a full orgasm, which only served to further arouse her. If he didn’t fuck her again soon, she’d go out of her mind.

Her ass was on fire and her clit throbbed, poised just on the edge of a climax. Blade’s hand on her breast was warm against the cool breeze blowing through the courtyard. She lost count of the number of times he struck her. A floating sensation drifted over her, and she gave into the peaceful feeling between pain and pleasure. It was the same exhilaration she’d experienced the first time she’d climbed a tree without any help from Peggy, who was taller and much better at climbing, even when they were kids.

Blade finally stopped then turned her to face him. He dropped the limb and took both breasts in his hands, giving her a look that would melt steel. “I’m going to make you come with my mouth.”

  “Oh God…”

He didn’t have to work very hard. He dropped to his knees, spread her thighs apart, and as soon as he touched her clit with his tongue the waves crashed over her. Blade slipped two fingers inside her pussy and continued to tease her clit with his tongue, long after her orgasm stopped. Joelle could do nothing except moan and cling to his hair.

Blade stood up and pulled her into his arms then helped her lie on the ground, face down again. He fucked her from behind, his hands on her ass cheeks. Every touch stung, and every thrust brought fresh pleasure. Joelle cried out and tore at the grass, pulling out tufts of it each time another wave of desire wracked her body.

By the time he finally came, she was covered in sweat and her fingers were stained green from the grass. Blade turned her on her side and wrapped his arms around her, holding her for long moments. After he helped her stand and they dressed, they drank a glass of wine each, and then he led her back inside. Nuzzling her neck, he whispered close to her ear. “Just wait until I get you back to my suite. I have more surprises in store for you.”

Blade turned on the water in his shower and beckoned to Joelle. She stepped inside, and closed her eyes as he enveloped her in his arms. The warm water caressed her skin, sending shivers down her spine. Blade washed her hair then gently lathered the rest of her body, taking his time.

She took the soap from him and did the same to him, paying extra attention to his cock and balls, until he moaned and writhed against her touch. As she was about to drop to her knees, he turned her around so she faced the shower wall.

“Joelle, there’s something I want to do, and I don’t know if you’ll like it, but I hope you’ll let me try.”

He circled the opening to her anus with a soapy finger, and Joelle tensed, but relaxed once she realized how incredible it felt. He reached for a small brown bottle on the shelf and took out the stopper. A warm, pungent aroma filled the air.

  “What is that?”

“Oil. It’s a better lubricant than soap and won’t burn. Try to relax. I promise I won’t hurt you, and I’ll stop if you don’t like it.”

A hot, wet finger slid inside her ass. There was no pain, only a feeling of pressure.

  “Are you okay?” asked Blade.

  “Yes.”

  “May I keep going?”

Joelle blinked back tears at the gentleness in his voice. She couldn’t remember a time when any man had been so concerned about her comfort or pleasure during sex. “Yes,” she whispered. “I want you to.”

Blade slipped his other hand around her waist as he pushed his finger further into her anus. The pressure subsided and was replaced by a sensation more pleasurable than she’d ever imagined. Joelle had always assumed anal sex would hurt. Granted, it was only a finger, and his cock was much longer and thicker, but if it felt this good, she wanted it. Now.

  “Still okay?”

“Yes. Blade, it feels great. Will you put your cock in there? Please?”

“Oh, Joelle…” He groaned and pulled out his finger. She turned her head to watch him rub the oil on his dick, then faced the wall again as he teased the opening with it. The same anticipation she’d felt before he paddled her with the tree branch raced across her skin.

It stung a bit at first, and then the pain subsided and was replaced with intense pressure. “Bend over a bit more, sweetheart. It will help.”

She swallowed hard and did as he asked. Had he just called her “sweetheart”? She’d been engaged to Scott for almost three years and they’d dated for two before that. Not once had he ever called her “sweetheart,” or any other term of endearment, for that matter.

His cock slid inside further, slowly, until the pressure subsided and the most exquisite pleasure replaced it. Joelle moaned and pushed back against him, wanting more.

  “Am I hurting you?”

“No, not at all. Please keep going. It feels incredible.”

Blade slid in a bit more then started thrusting, slowly. He reached under Joelle and rubbed her clit. She cried out as a climax built quickly. Never in any fantasy she’d had while masturbating had she conjured up such a decadent and amazing feeling. What would it be like to have a cock in each hole? Would Cristian and Blade agree to that? She had a sneaking suspicion they’d eagerly agree.

The more she whimpered and squirmed against him, the faster he fucked her, and the harder he rubbed her sore pussy. When the climax came it tore through her with so much intensity she had trouble staying on her feet. Blade pulled out and pulled her back under the water, which had grown cool. He held her, stroking her hair and back, until her breathing returned to normal.

  After he turn
ed off the water, they stepped onto the tile floor, and he toweled her off the way one might do for a small child. Again she was struck by the tenderness of the gesture. “Will you spend the night with me again?” she asked.

He smiled into her eyes and touched her cheek with one finger. “Just try and make me leave.”

As they lay in his bed, Joelle traced a finger along the crest on his arm. “You never did finish telling me what these symbols mean.”

  “Hmm?”

“The symbols on the crest. You said the tree represents the forests, but what do the wings and the snake represent?”

Blade didn’t answer her for so long she thought he’d fallen asleep. Finally he spoke in a low voice. “The dichotomy of good versus evil.”

  “Huh?”

“You know—wings for angels and a serpent for demons.”

It took a long time for Joelle to drift off to sleep.

  Chapter Ten

Blade woke up to a persistent knocking sound. He glanced at Joelle who was still sound asleep. It took him a moment to pull on his pants and a shirt. When he opened the door, Cristian stood there with a sheepish grin on his face.

“Is Joelle here? I need to talk to her.”

  “Why?”

“Not that it’s any of your beeswax, but I sort of slipped up again yesterday and she got upset. Then she wrote me a note, apologizing, but she has nothing to apologize for and I want her to know that.”

“She told me.” Blade opened the door and Cristian stepped across the threshold.

Cristian’s eyes grew wide. “What? Why the hell did she tell you?”

Blade cut his gaze to the hallway. “Keep your voice down. She’s sleeping.”

“I’m tired of being told what to do by you, Blade. You’re cruisin’ for a bruisin’.”

“She thinks you were trying to tell her that we all had vasectomies.” Blade relayed what Joelle had told him about her and Cristian’s rendezvous in the billiards room the day before.

  “What did you tell her?”

“Ah, not the truth, okay? Relax. If you hadn’t fucked up again, I wouldn’t have had to smooth things over.”

Cristian balled his hands into fists. Blade turned his back on him and went into the kitchen to make coffee. He should order Joelle some breakfast as well.

“Listen, wiseass, I’m tired of you bossing me around.”

“Cristian, I’m not bossing you around. But that’s twice you’ve slipped up with her in one afternoon.”

Cristian’s cheeks burned. “You couldn’t have had much fun last night if all you did was talk about me.”

Blade ignored the dig. “She told me you said we’d been planning the second set of horse trails for over two decades. Since we look don’t look old enough to have done that, she naturally was confused. She’s an intelligent woman, Cristian. You need to be careful around her.”

  “I know that.”

Blade poured milk into the mug then hesitated. He had no idea how Joelle liked her coffee. “You slip up around the guests all the time.”

“I know that, too. Knock it off, okay?”

“We all have to be careful.” Cristian was never careful. It was a constant thing with him. But Blade had slipped up, too. Joelle hadn’t said anything last night when he’d told her they broke ground in 1919 and opened the resort in 1921. Had she simply not heard him, or had she assumed he’d meant his nonexistent family had done both? He’d have to be more careful as well, but she confused his thoughts and made him forget what he was saying.

Cristian slammed his fist on the counter. Blade turned to face him, angry that he might wake up Joelle. “Stop acting like such a fucking child, Cristian.”

“Stop bossing me around.” Cristian’s voice reverberated through the tiny space.

“I’m going to order breakfast for me and Joelle. I’ll tell her you came by, and she can find you later so you can explain whatever it is you want to explain.”

“You can’t keep her all to yourself.” Cristian followed him into the sitting room. “You know the rules.”

Blade cut his gaze to the hallway again. “Lower your damn voice. We aren’t talking about that, Cristian. At least, I’m not. I’m talking about breakfast.”

“Right. I saw the way you looked at her all through dinner the first night she was here. Don’t tell me you haven’t got it bad for her, buddy boy.”

Anger bubbled up inside Blade. Cristian had struck a nerve, and Blade didn’t like it. Joelle had crawled so far under in his skin in a few short days it must show if Cristian could see it. But that was no reason to go on talking about it, and certainly not where Joelle could overhear. They were on dangerous ground.

“She’s a guest, Cristian. I won’t forget that, and I suggest you do the same.”

Cristian planted his feet and crossed his arms. “I don’t have any issues with remembering that, but you’re changing the subject.”

“Cristian, don’t be an ass. I haven’t been hogging Joelle’s time.”

  “Yes, you have.”

Blade sighed. “It’s not my fault you left her suite the other night then didn’t stay with her yesterday afternoon.”

“She got upset and stormed out of the billiards room.”

Blade resisted the urge to smile. “You should have gone after her.”

Cristian pouted and sunk onto the sofa, crossing his arms. “Well, I’m here now.”

  “And she’s sleeping.”

  “Not anymore I’m not.”

Blade whirled around at the sound of Joelle’s voice. She stood in the archway, frowning, wearing nothing but one of his shirts. His dick jumped to attention. Even when she looked pissed off, she was irresistible.

She looked at Cristian. “What did you mean when you told Blade he knows the rules?”

Blade nearly dropped the coffee cup he was holding. How long had she been listening? Cristian averted his gaze, but Joelle couldn’t have missed the way his skin paled. Was that the first thing she’d heard either of them say? If it wasn’t, they’d have to tell her the truth. This time they’d both fucked up in a big way.

“I didn’t know how you took your coffee.” Blade walked over to where she stood and handed her the cup. She gave it a cursory glance then turned her gaze on Cristian again.

“I’m waiting, Cristian.” Her voice was soft, but her tone left no doubt that she wouldn’t be pacified this time by a half-assed explanation.

“Business talk,” said Cristian. “I got your note, by the way, and I came to tell you that you don’t owe me an apology.”

She took a sip of the coffee and grimaced. “Do you have any sugar?”

Blade took the cup. “Coming right up.”

“Thank you, Cristian, but I still would like to know what you meant by rules. I’m assuming you mean rules about me and the other guests?”

Blade handed the cup back to her and forced a smile he hoped would look sincere. “That’s right. We don’t want anyone hogging the time of any one guest.”

“Yeah,” said Cristian. “I guess I got a little jealous that you spent the night with Blade again.”

Joelle didn’t look entirely convinced, but at least the frown was gone. “You could have stayed with me the other night as well, Cristian.”

“I know.” He rose and walked over to stand in front of her, his boyish grin firmly in place. Blade leaned against the wall and crossed his arms, resisting the urge to punch that grin off Cristian’s face. Joelle would melt like butter, just like they all did.

“Joelle, I’m sorry about yesterday afternoon. I shouldn’t have let you walk away while angry. Forgive me?” He lifted her free hand to his lips and kissed the back of it.

Blade shook his head as a bright smile broke out over Joelle’s face. The jealousy coursing through him made his stomach lurch. He’d better get a grip on his emotions and quickly. “Okay. Now that we’re all best friends again, I’m going to order some breakfast.” He clapped Cristian on the back. “You staying?” />
“I’d like to see you stop me.”

  * * * *

Joelle had the uncomfortable feeling she’d been lied to by both men. As she ate breakfast, she watched them carefully. Neither man ate much as they made small talk about the weather and what kind of a winter it might be. She couldn’t help thinking the conversation was forced.

She had woken to the sound of shouting but hadn’t been able to make out any actual words before she heard Cristian telling Blade he knew the rules. What Blade had said to her by way of explanation made sense, but she still couldn’t shake the unsettled feeling.

“What would you like to do today, Joelle?” Blade’s question snapped her back to the present.

“I don’t know. What did you have in mind?”

“I have an idea,” said Cristian. “Let’s see how good you really are at chess.”

“Chess?” asked Blade, giving Cristian a look that made Joelle laugh.

“I told Cristian my father taught me, and only one other man has ever beaten me besides him.”

  “Is that so?” asked Blade.

“She also told me she’s pretty good at pool,” said Cristian.

“Really? Well, it seems we’ve been issued a challenge, Cristian.”

Joelle’s nipples tingled at the grin on Blade’s face. What was it with these two? They could distract her with a glance. She couldn’t remember a time when she’d been this aroused so easily, but she wasn’t going to complain about it. Wasn’t that why she’d come on this vacation?

She rose. “Sounds like I’d better go back to my suite and put on clothes suitable for whipping your butts at both games.”

Cristian’s gaze traveled up and down her body, slowly. “Nothing wrong with what you have on. Except of course that it’s covering your luscious body.”

A shiver ran through Joelle. “Oh, no, you don’t. You’ve thrown down the gauntlet, and I can’t ignore that. I’ll be back in a short while. Prepare to lose.”

Back in her suite, Joelle took a quick shower and dressed, trying to forget what she’d heard while they thought she was asleep, but it nagged at her like a bad dream. It was the tone of Cristian’s voice as he said “the rules” that bothered her more than anything. It carried more weight than Blade’s explanation.
