Operation Sabre

Paul looked directly into his Dad’s tear-filled, blue eyes. ‘Okay Dad. It’s okay.’
His Father heaved a long sigh and pointed towards the watch, ‘Paul it’s time for you to choose whether to stay at MI2 and complete your training. But before you decide I’ve got something else to tell you. I think if I’m going to be a better Dad to you and Rachel, I need to be open with you and tell you one more thing. It’s about your sister Kate.’
Paul felt the stab of pain in his stomach and shifted in his chair saying quietly, ‘Okay.’
‘Yeah. Well listen. You know she died in a car accident. The thing is… this is really hard to say.’
‘Tell me Dad.’
‘Paul, the brakes didn’t fail. We didn’t hit a wall. A truck hit us. But the driver was never found. It was late and we were driving on a country road.’ Michael paused for a moment. ‘MI5 investigated it. The driver disappeared but he made a mistake. He left some documents in the cab of his truck. There was a picture of our car, a note of our registration and details of where we were going that night. Paul, it wasn’t an accident. The target was probably me, but the truth is your sister was murdered.’
Paul stared at his father and watched as tears fell from his eyes, making tiny splashes on the desk. ‘Paul, I loved her so much. She was taken from us that night. And I can’t rest until I find who did it. I won’t stop.’ He wiped his eyes with a tissue and looked up again. ‘Paul, you can walk away. I promise to spend more time with you and Rachel regardless of your decision. It’s your choice.’
Paul stood up and walked round the desk. He leaned down to his father and hugged him tightly. He then stood up and turned to face the door. Pausing beside the desk, he grabbed the watch and started walking. Without turning round, he said, ‘I’m in.’
