After what seemed only a moment later, she felt the soft press of Alec’s lips against her forehead. Then came his voice, low but urgent. “Molly, wake up.”
She forced her eyes open. “Alec, I really need to—”
“Trust me, you want to hear this.” He put the cell phone to her ear. “It’s Benjamin.”
She licked her dry lips and wondered why she had to personally talk to Benjamin. “Hi, Benjamin.”
“Congratulations, Molly!” His voice boomed over the line.
She hadn’t expected him to be quite so impressed, but she thought it was nice, anyway. “Thank you, Benjamin. She’s a beautiful little girl.”
“Congratulations on her, too, of course. But let’s face it, you don’t sell a book every day, either. I think that’s—”
“A book?” She was wide awake. “I sold Jungle Heat?”
“Assuming you accept the offer I got today, and I would advise you to do that. It’s a fine offer.”
Molly glanced up and saw Alec gazing down at her, his eyes glowing with pride. “I sold Jungle Heat,” she whispered.
“I know.” His voice trembled with excitement.
“I sold my book! Oh, Alec. And it’s all because of you.” Her throat tightened and tears threatened to fall.
“I didn’t do anything.”
“Yes, you did. You taught me—” She stopped, suddenly aware of the other people in the room and Benjamin still on the line.
Alec smiled gently and took back the phone. “She’ll accept the offer, Benjamin. And thanks. We’ll be in touch. ’Bye.”
Lauren approached the bed holding Cybil. “I’m giving this sweetie back to you, big brother. Mom and Dad and I agree this is an excellent moment to go in search of coffee so you and your new family can have time alone to celebrate all your good fortune.” She gazed down at Molly, her glance tender. “That’s wonderful about the book. I know how much you wanted that.” Then she squeezed Molly’s hand and left.
By then Molly’s face was wet with tears. “I have a sister now,” she told Alec. “Plus a second mom and dad.”
“Yep.” His eyes brimmed with emotion.
“And I have a wonderful husband, a gorgeous daughter and a book contract. Is there anything left to want?”
Holding Cybil carefully in his arms, Alec leaned down to kiss Molly on the lips. “Only one thing I can think of.”
“What?”
Moving closer, he murmured softly into her ear. “Our own video camera.”
