Emma tosses her head back, ready to lose it. She’s never felt such intense pleasure in her life. She wants more, she wants him. “I need you to fuck me.” She growls.

Zane looks up at her with glistening eyes. He hovers over her positioning the tip of his cock just outside of her. He rolls it around gathering her wetness.

Emma raises her hips up to him, sucking him into her pussy.

Zane let’s out a long growl and thrusts deeper inside her being careful not to hurt her.

“More, harder, I need it.” She grips his ass pulling him inside her giving him permission to pound her pussy.

Emma’s muscles contract and freeze as her orgasm builds in the pit of her belly moving down to her core. “Oh my God,” She cries out as her walls contract around his length. Emma’s body is overwhelmed as her orgasm blasts through her in surges of pleasure rushing between her legs. Zane groans as his muscles tighten as he comes in unison with her.

Emma can only hear the sound of her and Zane’s hearts beating in her ears. Her climax so intense, all she can do is lay there and pant.

  ***

Disappointment runs through Emma’s being when she opens her eyes to her bedroom. It’s still dark out, only the faint light of the city barely lighting the walls.

She lets out a breath thinking of the dream she had, so real. She thinks she can smell his scent in the air. But she knows it’s not.

  It was just a dream.

“Zane,” She tries it out wondering if that’s really his name.

  Chapter Three

A deep, demanding hunger rattles Zane awake in the jail cell. He rolls over on the cot clutching his stomach. He has to eat, now.

“Nice to see you joining the living again.” Kristi chides from the other side of the cell bars.

Zane groans at the pain in his head, he looks up at her through swollen eyes, “I need to eat.”

“Breakfast will be here in a few minutes. You really lost your shit last night.” She says dragging a chair closer to the cell, “Zane, you need to get hold of yourself. I’m worried about you.”

“Hungry.” Is all he can muster, the pain in his belly raging through him. He hates when they tranq him, it slows the healing process. He shouldn’t be feeling this pain in his ribs.

Kristi leans closer to the bars, “Are you listening to me?”

Zane lifts his eyes to her, “I need to eat.”

She blanches at his murderous gaze, “I need you to listen to me. Last night--”

“Stop. I get it. Jared can do what he wants, violate whatever woman he wants and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it. But I’m not going to stand by and let him. That girl last night--”

“Was somewhere she didn’t belong.” Kristi counters standing from the chair.

“So. Does that mean she should have his hands all over her without consent?” Zane’s blood boils with rage at the thought of anyone touching Emma. He stands from the cot pacing, his wolf raging to get out.

“Zane,” Ryland’s authoritative voice snaps him out of his hunger trance.

“Ryland.” Zane hangs his head, “You’ve got to stop him.”

“I’m stopping you.” He says walking across the wooden floor. “He’s going to be your Alpha one day.”

Zane’s eyes snap defiantly to Ryland, “No, he will never be my Alpha.”

Ryland shakes is head with remorse, “Are you going to challenge him?”

“If I have to.” Zane drags his fingers through his blood encrusted hair.

Ryland huffs a laugh, “You really think the pack will allow a half-breed to be their Alpha? That’s rich.”

“I think they’d rather have a half-breed than a spoiled misogynistic pig.” Zane counters.

“You’ve got to learn to control your temper. We know Jared can get out of hand sometimes, but so can you.” Ryland tries to take on a fatherly tone, “I care about you son, I don’t want to see anything happen

  to you.”

“Is that some kind of threat?” He cuts a challenging smile into his cheek.

“Next time you might not have the deputy here to save you from Jared,” he warns.

Kristi can’t help the tiny chuckle that escapes at how preposterous Ryland’s statement is. Jared is no match for Zane.

Zane huffs a laugh, “Oh, well, thanks for the warning.”

“I’m serious Zane, I loved your father, but that love can only go so far when what you’re doing is hurting the pack.” He paces in front of the cell.

He bristles against the lie. Ryland killed his father to become Alpha. He’s having trouble controlling his rage and his tongue. He stops to consider his words carefully, “How is not letting Jared manhandle a woman hurting the pack?” Zane pauses, his thoughts hitching on Emma’s scent.

“She was here to find a wolf, we see it all the time. He was just giving her what she was looking for.” Ryland’s flippant attitude sparks a deeper loathing in Zane. Rage, hunger and the need to run boil through his being.

  “Zane?” Ryland questions.

Zane approaches the bars of the cell. “I’m hungry, I need to eat. Let me out.”

Ryland eyes him cautiously, “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“I don’t give a shit what you think, get me out of here,” Zane growls. Sweat drips down his brow and he’s fighting against his wolf pacing wildly in his head. He’s losing control and his wolf is coming out. He grips the bars tighter.

“Don’t you take that tone with me,” Ryland warns. “I think you need a little more time in this cell to think about your next move, or you will be straight out of this pack.”

Zane’s eyes flash with rage, he growls out slowly, “This is my pack.”

Ryland stops in his tracks and leans closer to Zane, “Watch yourself, challenging me would be a deadly move on your part. You can sit tight for another day and think about that.”

Zane doesn’t answer, the thought of being trapped in this cage drives the last bit of sanity from his mind.

Kristi eyes the taser on the desk. The room has risen five degrees in temperature from Zane’s rage. She watches on in awe as he pushes on the door to the cell. “Zane, please don’t do this.”

“Zane, I’m warning you. You’re out if you do anything stupid.” Ryland says taking off his belt to get ready to shift for a fight.

Zane can’t hear them, the only thing he can hear is his wolf pushing to get out, they both need to get out. The metal buckles and moans against his pushing until the door releases from its hinges. He throws the door to the side and makes for the door to freedom.

“Zane!” Kristi calls out to him.

He turns back and looks at Kristi apologetically and then pins Ryland with a bloodthirsty gaze. He rips his shirt off but makes the shift before he can get his jeans off.

He takes off into the woods running. Hunger driving him forward. The only thing he can think about is killing and eating.

His paws pound on the ground running through the trees trying to catch the scent of something big for breakfast.

The scent of a nearby herd of Elk wafts on the air. He slows his pace to pinpoint their location. Zane’s stomach grumbles, he needs to eat. All of his reason is lost to his hunger. There are at least twenty elk in the herd and he wants the biggest one.

“Zane,” Kristi calls to him using the pack link. “Don’t do this.”

“I have to eat,” Zane says growling back toward her.

“You can’t hunt alone like this.” She warns him, “Not to mention, this is forbidden.”

“Fuck that, I need to eat.” Zane lurches forward toward the herd.

They scatter and run breaking toward open prairie, but the weakest in the herd fall behind. He has no interest in them only wanting the biggest elk.

Zane easily catches up with the big bull and nips at his haunches, the elk squeals in terror as he jumps on his back scrambling to his neck biting down. Zane’s huge jaws snap the vertebrae bringing the bull down with e
ase. The bull stumbles to the ground flipping over as the rest of the herd continues on in their stampede away from the danger.

Kristi looks on in horror as the dust settles. She knows hunting elk can be dangerous and shouldn’t be done alone. When the dust clears a sense of relief and disgust comes over her when she sees Zane feasting on the elk.

“Zane.” She reaches out to him.

He lifts his eyes to her while tearing flesh away from the elk’s body and swallowing it. He lets out a low growl of warning.

“Please, you’re scaring me. You need to come back, Ryland can’t find out what you’ve done.” She pleads.

“Leave me alone,” Zane says standing from his kill.

“I can’t.” She says then shifts into human form. Though she’ll be more vulnerable, she’s hoping that will lower Zane’s guard, bring him back to reason.

Zane stalks closer to her sniffing, taking in her feminine scent. His hunger for a woman reaches down inside him. He wants to eat, but he also wants to fuck.

He shifts into human form and circles Kristi.

“Hey, what’s gotten into you,” Kristi says afraid to make any sudden moves. She watches him closely.

“I’m hungry.” He gazes at her with heavy eyes, “For many things.”

Kristi takes a step back, “Yeah, we don’t do that anymore.”

He closes the distance between them and runs his finger down her shoulder. Flashes of Emma invade his thoughts and he steps back as though touching Kristi physically pains him. His arousal is visible, but he doesn’t want Kristi, just like he didn’t want the smaller elk at the back of the herd. He needed the biggest elk and he needs Emma.

“Whoa, that was too easy.” Kristi’s tone is riddled with suspicion.

“I want her.” He says absently, still lost in the memory of her scent.

“Who?” Kristi asks twisting her mouth in confusion.

  “Emma.”

  “Who’s Emma?”

“The woman from the bar. I have to have her.” Zane says shifting and running back toward town.

Kristi shifts and follows after him, “You need to make yourself scarce, Ryland’s on the warpath.”

  “Fuck Ryland,” Zane says defiantly.

“He’s your Alpha, you’d better not be fucking him. He’s pissed about the jail cell.” Kristi warns.

“I’ll deal with that later. Right now, I have to find Emma.” He presses harder to run faster to lose Kristi in the dust.

He has to find her, but he doesn’t know where to begin. The bar? No, she won’t be coming back. He knows nothing about her.

Zane’s working to focus and not fall into the madness of all of his burning needs to eat, fuck and kill.

  Chapter Four

Emma hikes her foot up the last step mentally bracing herself for opening the apartment door and finding all remnants of Jenn gone. Today was moving day. She slides the key in the lock and opens the door.

  Empty.

Even though all the furniture is still there, Jenn’s mess is gone. Emma looks down next to the door, the pile of shoes is missing. All the jackets and various articles of clothing Jenn always left everywhere are gone and there’s no pile of laundry sitting in the kitchen in front of the washer. She stands in the middle of the tidy apartment, wishing it was still a mess.

Emma spins around at the sound of the door creaking open.

Jenn stands in the small foyer and Kristoff fills the whole doorway with his size behind her. “Hey, girl! I bet you’re thrilled to see it actually clean again.” She giggles.

“Yeah,” Emma forces a half-hearted smile, “It’s nice.”

“I didn’t want to leave without saying goodbye.” Jenn goes to Emma wrapping her arms around her.

She tries to hold back the tears of fear and loneliness that run through her. “That was nice of you.”

“Oh, don’t be like that.” Jenn pulls back and swats Emma’s arm. “I wish you would come with me.”

“To New Mexico?” Emma pulls her lips to the side. “I don’t think so. I’m a city girl.”

“You’d be welcome in the pack.” Kristoff offers, “Anything to make Jenn happy.”

“I don’t think they’d be thrilled with the idea of another human being in the pack.” Emma rolls her eyes and sets her purse down on the end of the couch.

“They’ll be thrilled with whatever idea I tell them to be,” Kristoff says with a laugh.

“I appreciate it, but my life is here,” Emma responds without looking up.

  “Like what?” Jenn’s tone hardens.

“Like, the apartment, my job...I have other friends, you know.” She says defensively.

“I just worry about you, Emma. I think you’d really like it in New Mexico.” Jenn takes Emma’s hands in hers.

“Listen, I’m happy for you. It’s just going to be an adjustment. I have to find a new roommate and I’m going to be fine.” Emma tries to reassure her.

“You’re welcome to come visit anytime,” Jenn says giving up on her friend coming with her.

“I will. I have a few days off next month, I’m coming down to see you.” Emma proclaims.

“Really?” Jenn says with hope in her eyes.

“Of course.” She says not really believing her own words.

Kristoff eyes Emma, catching the lie. “Jenn, are you ready? I’d like to get home and get you settled in.”

“Yeah, just about.” Jenn turns back to Emma. “Come see me.” She leans in for a hug and whispers in Emma’s ear. “And call Gerri.”

Emma huffs a barely there laugh rolling her eyes, “Okay.”

Jenn steps into Kristoff’s arms, he embraces her feeling her sorrow for leaving her best friend behind. He wants to do anything that will make Jenn happy and makes one last-ditch effort, “Emma, I can promise you will feel welcome in the pack. I...we would really love it if you came with us. Even just for a visit, see if you like it.”

“I will come to visit.” Emma nods her head once, “Promise.”

Jenn smiles and runs to Emma hugging her one last time, “You’d better and I’ll be back up to visit you too!”

“I look forward to it!” Emma says hugging Jenn tightly then pushing her away, “Now get out of here! You’ve got to get busy messing up Kristoff’s house.”

Although Jenn is excited, her sadness for leaving her friend is heavy in the air, “I’ll miss you.”

“Go! Git!” Emma says before the deluge of tears breaks through her resolve, “I’ll be fine.”

Kristoff ushers Jenn out and the door clicks closed.

Emma releases a breath and sucks it back in fast. She stares at the door for a solid minute before heading for the kitchen.

She opens the fridge to see a bottle of wine and a cake with a note, “I know changes can be hard, but you’d better come to see me and you’d better call Gerri.”

Gerri’s business card falls from behind the note. Emma picks it up shaking her head. “Yeah, I’m going to pass.”

She throws it in the trash before pouring herself a glass of wine and going into the living room to watch TV. She needs some sort of noise in the apartment so it won’t feel so empty, it’s when the quiet comes that her mind wanders to things she doesn’t want to think about.

Her failed relationships are usually the first things that come to mind. But this time, it’s Zane. What was it about him? Maybe it was being rescued. She’s not used to the sort of kindness he showed her. He didn’t want anything in return, he only wanted her to leave safely.

Well, there you go, he wanted me to leave. I can’t even get rescued by someone that wants me. She thinks to herself shoveling another bite of cake into her mouth.

She flips through the channels without paying attention to what’s on. She finds an old movie, a tried and true staple that she can always fall asleep watching.

  ***

The alarm on Emma’s phone wakes her from another very pleasant dream that a certain wolf was the star of. She blushes at wha
t her imagination was able to come up with. She basks in the memory of the dream for only a moment before the backup alarm goes off on her phone. “Shit, I’ve got to get up.”

She trudges down the hall to the bathroom to shower. She stands in the steamy hot water letting it glide over her ample breasts. The feeling is reminiscent of Zane’s hands on her in the dream and she gets lost in the thought again.

“Snap out of it Emma, you’ve got to get going.” She says as she massages shampoo into her long blond hair.

Once out of the shower she goes to pick up her toothbrush and sees The Paranormal Dating Agency’s card on the counter. “Jesus, Jenn how many of these cards did you have?”

She chucks it in the trash bin and gets ready for work.

Emma parks her car in her usual spot and heads inside the office building. She’s always felt she was meant for something more than just being the star administrative assistant in a law firm. The work is boring, but the pay is good.

She turns on her computer and gets a cup of coffee. When she returns to her desk her eyes are immediately drawn to the business card sitting in front of her keyboard. She looks around the sea of cubicles to see if Jenn is hiding somewhere in the office.

She picks up the card turning it over. “How the hell?”

“What?” A male voice from behind her asks.

Emma crumples the card quickly in her fist before turning around, “Nothing Mr. Langly. How are you this morning.”

Emma feels like she’s been caught red-handed. She’d be the laughing stock of the office if anyone saw that card. She’s definitely going to visit Jenn now, so she can kill her.

“I’m fine, and how are you?” He asks with a smile.

“I’m good, it’s Friday.” She smiles.

“Glad to hear it. I just wanted to see how the billing files were coming along.” He asks, getting right to business.
