Feel the Flames

“You can show me how to get there. I wouldn’t even need to use the ring. We go, we rescue Dorian, and we figure out how to end it. All of it.”

Gavyn frantically paced about, his hands on top of his head.

  “No. I’m sorry Skyy. I can’t.”

“But I need you. You have the fourth gem. Without it, I won’t be able to control the demons. If you won’t go with me, then at least do the right thing and hand over the gem.”

“I said no!” he shouted. “I was done with all of this years ago. I was willing to help you find the ring. But…going to Hell. I’m out.”

He stormed over to the door and opened it. Gavyn paused and turned, looking me in the eye.

“Good luck,” he said meekly. “And…I’m sorry.” Gavyn walked out the door, closing it behind him.

No one said anything until I heard Grace huff loudly.

  “Goddamn coward,” she grumbled.

  “Great. Now what?” asked Rami.

I held the ring firmly in my hand, closing my fingers around it tightly. It felt hot against my skin. I thought about Dorian and how he’d professed his love for me. I thought about the first time he kissed me and how much I loved curling up with him under the stars at night as we talked about life. I also thought about Sean and all the times he’d told me to pull my head out of my ass and do the right thing and how he always believed in me, even when I couldn’t believe in myself.

But I had begun to feel different. The ring was beginning to affect me in ways I knew I couldn’t yet understand. It would be a battle to keep my moral compass pointing north as long as I had it in my possession, and my sanity would begin to wane. But as long as it remained with me, humanity was secure.

Shoving the ring back into my jeans pocket, I felt more determined than ever to do what needed to be done. Destiny or no destiny, I was going to do things my way. No longer would I be a puppet whose strings were being pulled and tugged by Heavenly forces.

It was time to create my own fate.
