Sapphire Attraction (The Drakes of California)

“I was furious. Demanded punishment in addition to the fine. But it turns out, I got punished, too. You see, the judge ordered Quinn to do an unusual type of community service.” He put air quotes around those two words. “He ordered her to work with me at Drake Realty.”

  The buzz grew.

“Exactly. As you can imagine, I was not happy, and neither was she. It was like oil and water, and not only are those two solutions hard to mix, we didn’t even want to mix. And then something crazy happened.” Ike looked directly at Quinn. “I fell in love with her.”

Her quick intake of breath was the only reaction. Other than that she was frozen with shock.

“I told myself that it was ridiculous. Who falls in love after just one month? Me, that’s who. Which is why I’m going to ask Quinn if you’ll please come here, sweetheart.”

It seemed the longest time before she slowly rose and walked toward him as people clapped. When she reached him, he held her hand.

“I never thought I’d say this, but being in that accident was the best thing that ever happened to me.” He reached into his pocket, pulled out a box and got on his knee. “Quinn Taylor, would you do me the honor of becoming Mrs. Drake? Will you marry me?”

She nodded as he stood. Her yes was swallowed in his kiss. Her hands shook as he placed on her finger a ring with the most beautiful stone she’d ever seen. It was a sapphire, but not the kind sold in mall jewelry stores. Later, by reading the origin and authenticity certificate she’d learn that it was a fairly rare ten-carat untreated Burmese stone mined in Israel, surrounded by pink diamonds and set in platinum. Quinn would also learn that Ike had approached her grandmother for advice on the type of ring he should buy. Her grandmother knew her better than anyone. Sapphire was the perfect choice.

Of successful couples, those with two polar opposites make up a very small fraction. But the odds don’t matter when the love is sealed with a sapphire attraction.
