Hardly fucking surprising! Ademia would have hit the man had she had the strength.
“Dr. Jasun, you know Nurse Serefina Reis, don’t you?”
“Yes, we’ve met,” Dr. Jay said, giving the woman a tight smile. He hadn’t forgotten the way she had treated his girl yesterday.
“Nurse, would you help Ademia into bed, please? We’re going to keep her for a few days,” Dr. Ernaut continued, while scribbling something on a computerised notepad. “She’s going to need plenty of rest once we get her temperature down.”
“Don’t worry, love, we’re not leaving you,” Farris smiled at Ademia.
Her relief that he had read her thoughts was short lived when she saw him get up and follow the doctors out of the room.
“Well, Ademia, I suppose we’d better get you out of those…clothes,” Nurse Reis said derisively as soon as the door closed behind the men.
Ademia shook her head. Will you fuck!
The nurse sighed tiresomely. She took a gown from the chair beside the bed. “You have to wear this when you’re in hospital. Do you understand?” She spoke to the young girl as if she were a little child.
I understand a lot more than you think, bitch!
Not being able to speak was killing Ademia. She nodded dejectedly and allowed the nurse to remove her bikini and tie a gown around her.
“Looks like you won’t be living with the good doctor for awhile, dear,” Nurse Reis whispered sardonically as she tucked a thin sheet around her.
Ademia just stared at her. She didn’t know what she would have said if she had been able to speak just then, but she knew it wouldn’t have been anything nice. Bitch!
Dr. Ernaut came in to administer some drugs, which he did though a syringe into the cannula in her arm. It wasn’t painful, but it wasn’t comfortable either.
“You get some rest, young lady, I’ll be in to see you later,” he promised.
He left the room with the nurse following. Ademia stared at the door, willing it to open and Farris and Dr. Jay to come in, but they didn’t. The bright lights in the stark, white room, made her head ache even more and she closed her eyes as they began to water. It wasn’t long before everything went black.
“She’s asleep already.” Farris couldn’t hide his disappointment a few moments later when he put his head around the door.
“That stuff works fast. It should bring her temperature down in a few hours,” Dr. Jay commented.
“Good, can we take her home then?” Farris knew she wouldn’t want to stay there.
Dr. Jay chuckled. “No, she’s in for the night at least, maybe two. You heard Dr. Ernaut, they need to keep an eye on her.”
“We need to keep an eye on her!” Farris corrected, gazing longingly at her. “And we can do that quite well at home once the fever’s down. You know she’ll hate being here!”
“I know, bro, but we have to think of her needs, not her wants. She needs to be here in case it flares up again. Once we’re sure her temperature’s stabilized and she’s on the road to recovery, we’ll take her home. We can’t risk her being ill on the island. We just haven’t got the facilities they’ve got here.” Dr. Jay was adamant.
“Then I’m staying with her,” Farris said obstinately.
“They won’t let you stay in the room with her, and you’d be better off at home than in a waiting room downstairs,” Dr Jay explained.
“But I promised her we wouldn’t leave her,” Farris said, horrified.
“Then I’ll stay. I’m sure they could use an extra pair of hands around here and I can pop in and out to keep an eye on her at the same time. You take the boat back and let them know what’s happening. You need to get some proper sleep.” Dr. Jay had it all worked out.
Farris looked down at the sleeping girl. He didn’t want to leave her. The doctor read his thoughts.
“Look, bro, you know I’ll look after her. If anything happens I’ll Super-Skype Rech to send you over. Not that I’m expecting any emergencies now. Look how peaceful she is. Her breathing’s much shallower and her temperature’s starting to drop already. She’ll be fine now.”
Farris bit his lip. He knew it made sense, but he still didn’t like it. Eventually he sighed and bent down to give her a kiss on the lips before quietly making his way out the door. He also made Dr. Ernaut promise to look after her until he returned.
“Are you going, too?” Nurse Reis asked Dr. Jay, after watching his friend leave.
“No, Nurse, I’m staying with her,” Dr. Jay replied firmly.
She gave him a sly smile and went back to her paperwork.
Dr. Jay sighed. He really didn’t like that woman!
Chapter 4
Dr. Jay spent the rest of the day checking on Ademia and helping Dr. Ernaut with a few routine procedures around the ward. It had been years since the young doctor had worked in a hospital and he enjoyed the change. The ailments that these patients suffered from were much different from those that the sailors endured while en route between continents in what usually turned out to be turbulent waters. His position as the only medic on Refrainia had been different again, with his latest work usually involving accidents that the sailors incurred while learning new skills such as boat making, hut renovation or farming. He had forgotten how diverse the illnesses of the mainland population could be, involving anything from broken limbs to tropical diseases. Over the years, modern technology had eradicated almost all terminal diseases, including Ebola hemorrhagic fever, Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome and every type of cancer.
After sharing a meal with the elderly doctor before he left for the night, Dr. Jay returned to the side room and settled himself in the large chair by Ademia’s bedside. She had slept soundly since being given the drugs and her temperature had dropped considerably. Once Dr. Jay was satisfied that she was pain-free and comfortable, he allowed himself a well-earned rest. He was a lot more tired than he imagined, and soon fell into a deep sleep. When he awoke, it was already light. He smiled as he checked Ademia’s condition. Her temperature was back to normal and she looked much better. He noted that she should soon be waking up, and quickly went to the men’s room to freshen up before she saw him.
Nurse Reis had already arrived for her morning shift and saw the young doctor leave the side-room and head for the bathroom. Her makeup was perfect and not a hair was out of place in her neat bun.
“Dr. Jasun, thank goodness, I need your help!” She ran over to the young doctor as he left the men’s room. Knowing that a member of staff would only run in a dire emergency, he wasted no time in following her. She led him up the long corridor and to a small treatment room around the corner.
The young doctor scanned the room, expecting to find a patient in urgent need of medical help, but instead the room was empty. He looked back to the door where the nurse was slipping the key down her bosom, having locked them both in. A salacious expression was plastered across her heavily made-up face.
“What do you think you’re doing, Nurse Reis?” Anger and concern laced his deep voice, as he frowned at the woman.
“I would have thought that was obvious, doctor,” she said with a sly grin, removing her little hat and allowing her brunette hair to fall freely around her shoulders. She wore a neat bob when her hair was not tied up, and she obviously made frequent visits to the salon as it was always kept in perfect shape. She shook her head as her shiny hair framed her face, and she gave him her most sultry gaze.
“Do you have a patient who needs me?” he demanded.
“No, not a patient, but I need you, Dr. Jasun.” She walked toward him, much like a slinky panther rounding on her prey.
Her slender arm was around his neck and her luscious mouth was swooping toward his. He could smell her expensive, exotic perfume as she neared his face. He leapt backward but the back of his legs soon found the bed. She was still smiling at him licentiously.
“Get away from me,” he warned, holding her shoulders in his strong hands.
“I’m sure that’s not what
you really want,” she said in a husky voice, pouting at him.
“Oh yes it is. I want you to stay the hell away from me and unlock that door now!” His anger was rising, as was his concern about being in the room alone with this woman. He hadn’t forgotten Aitan’s warning, and cursed himself for allowing this situation to occur.
“Make me!” She winked at him slowly and lecherously, daring him to take her up on her offer.
He was literally holding her at arm’s length, his biceps bulging in his determination not to give her an inch.
“No. You go over there and open the door now.” He growled at her.
“And if I don’t?”
“You will!” He used his best Dom voice in an attempt to convince her. He was unaware that it actually turned the seductress on even more.
He was becoming enraged by her refusal to back down, and he squeezed her shoulders harder.
“Are you saying you don’t want me, doctor?” Her sultry tone only served to incense him even more.
“You’re damn right I am,” he spat through gritted teeth.
“But think of all the fun we could have,” she almost whispered, as her hand came up and she unzipped the front of her dress. She thrust her naked, pert breasts forward, and twisted her body slightly to ensure that one of them rubbed against his arm.
“Cover yourself up!” he shouted angrily.
“Shh, now doctor, I should be quiet if I were you, we don’t want to draw any attention to ourselves, do we?” she said in a patronizing tone, which only infuriated him further. “After all, we don’t want anyone to know that you and I are in here together.”
“We are not together, nurse, and never will be. I have no interest in you whatsoever, do you understand me? I want absolutely nothing to do with you!” He spoke firmly and deliberately, staring into her face.
“Oh, come, on, you can call me Serefina when we’re alone together. And what do I call you? Dr. Jay? Or just Jay? What is your first name anyway?”
In truth, he never used his first name. His closest friends used his nickname, Jay, the shortened version of his surname. The women of the island called him Dr. Jay and even most of the sailors now used the name. He wasn’t about to explain that to this vixen, however.
“You call me Dr. Jasun, and I will continue to call you Nurse Reis, as we are both professionals, do you hear me? There is nothing personal between us and never will be. Now stop all this nonsense and let me out of here now!” he yelled at her in his frustration.
She looked genuinely stunned. She stared at him with big, brown eyes. This lady was obviously not used to being rejected and it didn’t sit well with her.
“You’ll regret this!” She screamed at him.
She tried to yank herself free of his grip but he held her tight.
“Calm down,” he told her sternly.
“Will I hell! How dare you treat me like this? I’ll make you pay for this, you’ll see!”
She opened her mouth and screamed at the top of her voice. “Help me, someone, help!”
Immediately someone tried the handle and there was banging on the door as voices could be heard shouting.
“Open up! Serefina, are you in there? Are you all right?”
Dr. Jay rolled his eyes in despair. This woman was a bitch, all right. “She’s fine. No one’s hurting her,” he called over to the door.
Turning back to her, he said quietly, “Fasten your dress and unlock that door. You’ll get us both in trouble at this rate.”
“Do you think I care?” she smirked at him as she spoke. “Who do you think they’ll believe?”
“Security are on their way, Serefina. We’ll soon have you out,” a male voice shouted from outside as fists resumed thumping at the door in an attempt to break it down.
“For God’s sake! Why are you doing this?” Dr. Jay pleaded with the woman through gritted teeth. “Just tell them there’s been a mistake.”
He shook her as he tried to make her see reason.
“Adding injury to insult won’t help your case, Dr. Jasun,” she said smarmily, looking pointedly at where his big hands were still gripping her shoulders. She opened her mouth to shout again but he put a hand across it to keep her quiet.
Her hand grabbed at his arm, just as the door opened and a couple of security men burst in, followed by a crowd of concerned staff.
Dr. Jay closed his eyes as he realized just what they were looking at. The pretty, young nurse with her dress undone, breasts hanging out and him holding her tight with a hand across her mouth! Oh God!
Tears streamed down her face, smudging her make-up, just to add to the effect, as the Security Guards took hold of each of his arms and led him away. Nurses rushed to console the woman as she milked the situation for all it was worth.
* * * *
Ademia’s head still throbbed as she slowly opened her eyes. The bright lights and sterile surroundings left her in no doubt about where she was. Shit!
She pulled herself up and sat on the edge of the bed. She was alone. Seething, she changed back into her bikini and pulled her shawl around her. Opening the door, she heard a kerfuffle and saw people crowding toward the end of the corridor where it turned a corner. They were totally oblivious to the young girl as she marched in the opposite direction. There were signs everywhere, so it wasn’t hard to find the exit, and she was soon breathing in fresh air and making her way down the street.
So much for Farris’s promise that they wouldn’t leave me! Angry tears flooded her face as she strode along, feeling betrayed and deceived. She had begun to feel strongly about her two men and had fantasies about a more physical relationship with them. Forget it! She told herself they were just lying bastards who didn’t give a damn about her.
“Ademia, are you OK?”
She wiped her face and saw Palben hurrying toward her. He wasn’t wearing a suit as she would have expected, but was dressed in blue jeans and a cream shirt which was partially unbuttoned, showing his skinny ribs.
“I’m fine,” she said, choking back a sob.
“You don’t look it. Are you on your own?” Palben looked concerned but wary as he went to put an arm around the young girl.
“Yes, I’m alone,” she said, bursting into tears again. It suddenly dawned on her that she was all alone in a strange place and had no way of getting home. How could they desert me like this?
Palben hugged her. Being very thin and wiry, he didn’t offer the same sort of security and assurance that her men gave her, but she was grateful for his comfort.
“Come on, let’s get a drink,” he suggested, steering her toward a small tavern.
“I shouldn’t drink,” she said, wiping her face. She hadn’t forgotten Dr. Jay’s wrath from the other day.
“I’ll get you a cola,” Palben said with a smile.
They sat at a small table in a dark corner. It had a soft sofa, which they both sat on to enjoy their cool drinks. Palben was gulping a pint of beer, while she sipped her cola. It tasted very sweet and like nothing she had ever had before, but he promised her it had no alcohol, and it wasn’t a bad taste so she drank it. Her sobbing subsided and she appreciated Palben’s company.
“I thought you wore a suit,” she said with a sniff.
“Only for work,” he said with a laugh, “It’s not what I choose to wear on my days off.”
“So is it your day off today? Does that mean you don’t have to do any work?”
He laughed again. “Yes, it’s Saturday. I don’t have to work on Saturdays or Sundays, like most people. Don’t you have days when you don’t work?”
Every day on Refrainia was much like another. They didn’t name the days or do anything special on certain days until the sailors came to stay. They always needed to eat so they always had to ensure there was enough food. That used to mean taking what they could from sinking ships, but now it meant cultivating the land and fishing. While most of the men did the heavy work, the girls would prepare and cook the food for them.
“No,” she said.
He shook his head, smiling. “I don’t know why you put up with it,” he said. “Why don’t you move here and work only when you want to? I could look after you. You could buy clothes and pretty things. You could easily earn enough money to get yourself somewhere nice to live. Why don’t you think about it?”
She thought. “I’ve never considered leaving Refrainia,” she admitted. “It’s always been my home. All my friends are there.”
“Friends?” He snorted. “Friends who leave you stranded in a strange place? Friends who don’t even stay with you when you’re sick? Friends who don’t look after you? I hate to say it, sweetheart, but I don’t call that friendship.” He took another slurp of his beer.
Ademia’s eyes were wide. Tears threatened again.
“I’m sorry, it just makes me so mad that those thugs were so angry that you were with me the other day, and now they’ve proven that they don’t give a damn about you. They’re just bullies, if you ask me. They don’t want you, but they try to make sure no one else gets you. I’m so sorry for you, Ademia, the way they’ve treated you is unforgiveable.”
Tears fell down her face as she thought about his words. They only echoed what she had been thinking earlier, but somehow it sounded even worse to hear someone else say it.
Palben slid closer and put both arms around her. He held her tightly and kissed the top of her head.
“It’s all right, sweetheart, I’ll look after you,” he promised.
Her brain was in a muddle. She’d never contemplated living on Eastland before, but with no way to get home, she had no choice. How could they do this to me? I really thought I was falling in love with those men and now they have done this! Abandoned me. Left me in a strange hospital knowing I didn’t want to be there. Left that bitch to look after me. Left me stranded with no way to get home. People who cared wouldn’t do that.
“I don’t know what to do,” she wailed. “I just want to go home.”
“I’m sorry, sweetheart, I wouldn’t know how to get you there,” he lied. “But Eastland’s a great place to live. We’ve got loads of places to socialize and have fun. You’ll make a killing here. We’ll be rich in no time.”
