Two months previous, as told in the story Remembered Kisses:

  Death and rebirth.

Julian, my vampire lover, took three days to heal, and my body was entwined with his during that time. Leo, my werewolf mate, said he had raised the lid periodically to check on us. He told us he started to worry the third day, but that's when we awoke.

I wasn't sure of the moment when my soul returned to my body. I just remember the sound of Julian's voice as he commanded me in a strong, distant voice.

  "Anjelia. Awaken."

There was a deep breath of sweet, fresh air as my lungs filled, then fought against the unfamiliar sensation. I could hear the rush the instant it entered my body, like the flood of a raging river. It swirled through every cell of lung tissue, tiny tendrils of oxygen, similar to little fingers reaching and spreading. Yet, like too much of a good thing, I gagged.

I opened my eyes on a whirlwind of confusion, feeling as though I was strangling. I clutched my throat reflexively, clawing at the skin there as though I could create an opening for the air to rush from. Panic stricken, I struggled desperately for some semblance of my sanity.

"Relax, my sweet. You're fine. Let it happen," Julian whispered.

It was his arms that I'd struggled against. As soon as I realized it, I calmed and the breathing came naturally again.

My heart raced as it sought out a rhythm that had been forgotten. It thumped awkwardly, painfully in my chest as it tried to capture its usual beat.

"Feel the air around you. Feel the soil beneath you. Know that you are safe," he murmured, as he pressed his lips to my temple.

Although my eyes had been open, they were unseeing. Now suddenly, I focused on a blurry face looking down at me from outside the coffin. Amber eyes, with dark stubble along his strong jaw. Leo leaned down. Wrapped in Julian's arms, I received Leo's kiss of warmth against my cold lips.

I knew I'd died. My body was different when Julian and I arose. My skin was soft, renewed, like that of a newborn. My lips were pink, my cheeks rosy. My hair was silky soft, the waves tamed.

My eyes were amber again, the bitter light from releasing The Crone diminished.

I felt amazing. Would Julian recharge in his coffin without me during the times I was away? Somehow, I doubted it.

But I would remind him when I came home to Bang's, and we will always remember to die together. Horrifying as it was for me, he needed this.

That night's sleep was peaceful. You would think with as much coffin death as I had, I wouldn't need a human sleep, but I slept solidly. Although, with one thought in my head. Along with death comes rebirth. I don't remember what that saying is from, but it popped into my head as soon as I opened my eyes.

I woke late. At least I think it was. I was still at the vampire quarters, and there was no sun to awaken me naturally.

I suspected the lateness because next to me, Julian's body was completely cold. When he dies at dawn, it takes his body a few hours to cool.

Something had awoken me and I didn't know what. Then I realized I didn't feel so great. There it was again, the queasiness in my stomach. It had been so long since I've been sick, I had no idea what it felt like. My stomach lurched, and I headed into the bathroom. I wet a rag with cool water, and sat on the cold marble floor.

How could I be sick? I was immune to most diseases. Maybe it was just my period starting. Maybe just a prelude to the cramps?

I did a mental count backwards. Wait a minute, that couldn't be right.

My weeks were thrown off by the times we went off schedule recently between the wolf mansion and Bang's. I recounted and realized it was longer than I thought since I'd had my monthly.

Something jiggled at the outer edges of my memory. The tiny, wispy tendril of a dream I'd once had.

I'd dreamed I was delivering a baby, one with fangs, who had changed to a wolf before my eyes.

Suddenly I understood. It wasn't a dream. It wasn't a lost memory fighting its way through my subconscious.

It was a foretelling of the future. And that future was now.

  Chapter One

Two months later, I kept the secret. I wanted to be sure. Now, I was.

  Definitely pregnant.

There were so many things to figure out still, like—who's the daddy?

My name is Anjelia Romere, and I am shared by two men, the werewolf king and the master vampire of the city we live in. I love them both and have no ill feelings about the manipulations that placed me in this new adaptation of life.

In the human world, Leo Freedman is a surgeon. To the supernaturals, he is the werewolf king of his pack, and my mate. I am known as the wolf queen.

Julian Bax is owner of a bar called Bang’s, the master vampire of our city, and my other love. While the vampires had gone public and were out in the open, humans still didn’t know werewolves existed. More than likely it would stay that way since the wolves were integrated pretty closely within human society, and they’d watched as the vampires were not exactly welcomed with open arms.

Prejudice toward supernaturals is still a major problem. While the world now knows of my relationship with Julian, the master vampire, it had caused such a scandal that my appointed position with city council was returned to an elected position in an attempt to unseat me. There was no way the human world could accept that I was also Leo’s wolf mate, since in the human world werewolves didn’t exist.

The pregnancy had to be Leo’s son, since vampires are not able to reproduce. Yet Leo had told me I would never be able to conceive, not after the baby that I’d already lost. He should know, he was my doctor at the time. For that reason, I still kept the pregnancy secret. How in the world were they going to believe this?

I knew I had to get both of them together to tell them at the same time, but I dreaded upsetting any balances that we’d already attained. A tentative truce existed between the werewolf and vampire clans. Of course, the truce was based on a secret binding between Leo and Julian, necessary at the time to save my life. The binding was old-fashioned and basically made Leo a kept wolf, so to speak. If word of it came out into the supernatural world, the werewolves and vampires would be all over each other again. Instead, the wolves currently believed that they had one up on the vampires by forcing Julian to share me with Leo, for I was the mistress first and still became the wolf queen. Yet the vampires believed they had one up on the werewolves because I was destined to become a wolf when Julian had stolen me from them and erased my memory long before I could actually become their wolf king’s mate. It had left Leo vulnerable, his magic poured into the wolf marking low on my back, and without my presence, he was prone to insanity.

No, the two species weren’t on
e up on each other. In reality, the three of us were tied together in a sort of magical triangle.

We’d had our rough spots with a kidnapping of Julian, me ingesting black magic, and Leo killing Julian’s sire for attempting to rape me. But we’d been getting along great for weeks now. The werewolves attended Bang’s, the vampire bar, as a supernatural haven. They were slowly learning to get along with the vamps. It helped that magic was being used to strip super powers at the first hint of tenseness, leaving the supernaturals as helpless as humans. A feeling of punishment they dreaded enough to play nice with others in the sandbox.

Things were even more than too good to be true—Julian and Leo were back to their tentative friendship. As they’d once promised, there was one day a month that they spent together, learning to get along without my presence.

But to break the news to them tonight would be tricky. It was more fair to call Leo into Bang’s that evening because I was on Julian’s two week stint. Leo, while shocked, would be elated at the thought of a biological son. Therefore, he could happily return home to the mansion without me.

If I waited for Julian to come to me at the mansion for the meeting during my time with the werewolves, Julian would have to go home dejected, knowing it was undoubtedly Leo’s infant I carried within my womb.

The phone rang a couple of times before Leo answered.

“Miss me, love?” he asked teasingly, since I’d only been gone one day.

“I do. I miss you lots.”

  “What’s wrong?”

I laughed. “Nothing’s wrong. I just want you to come to Bang’s tonight to see me. It’s Monday, the bar will be slow. Are you too busy at the hospital?”

“No,” he said slowly after thinking about it. “I’m not too busy and I can go into the hospital late tomorrow afternoon anyway. So I’ll be there. What time?”

  “Mmm, nine?”

“Nine is good. I love you.”

“Love you back. Wear leather for me.”

He laughed. “Only if you don’t say the same to Julian. I don’t want to show up and be his twin.”

“I won’t,” I promised with a smile before we disconnected.

I headed upstairs to the bar to find Julian. Johnny, Julian’s second in command, was having liquor delivered. They were massive, heavy crates of human alcohol and vampire bottles of Red, a blend of human blood and red wine.

Johnny was in an unusually good mood. He was a darker-skinned vamp, and wore his head smooth. He was built like a rock, all bulky muscle. “Luscious Leah, he’s in his office.” He stooped and gave me a kiss on the forehead.

“What’s got you so happy?” I asked.

“I’m getting lucky tonight. The trio's broken up. Anna’s out with the wolf, Nicki’s gone, and I’ve got alone-plans with Lily.”

The trio consisted of Lily, Johnny’s love interest. She appeared fragile with buttery soft blond hair and blue eyes. She was extremely graceful, like a swan. She’d sired two others to protect her, Anna and Nicki. Nicki was the intelligence of the group, and Anna, well, she was a character like no other.

Currently, she was the first vampire ever to date a werewolf, my friend Rhett.

I left hurriedly before Johnny blasted out the details. Not only were vampires voyeurs, they tended to overshare. Bounding up the back stairs, I found Julian on the phone in his office. He motioned for me to come close and I cuddled onto his lap until he finished his conversation.

  “Bad news?” I asked.

It hadn’t been long ago that we’d killed his sire, Nico, and a part of me still worried about repercussions from the French Council.

“No, not terribly. I’ve inherited Nico’s kingdom now that he’s gone. Running it from here will be difficult. I’m considering sending Lily and Nicki out there.”

“Why not Anna?” I was a little worried. A few months earlier, she had begun dating Rhett, the werewolf. Was he still unconsciously punishing her for her secret actions?

“Do you really want me to rip her away from her wolf?”

I lowered my lashes, suddenly ashamed of myself for thinking he would stoop that low. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be silly. You’ve been a little sensitive lately,” he said, kissing my forehead.

  If only he knew.

“I want to ask a favor,” I began. “I invited Leo over to Bang’s tonight at nine. It shouldn’t be busy. Will you have time to come sit with us?”

“Don’t you want time with him alone?”

“No. I want you both there,” I said lightly, not wanting to give the reason away.

His arms tightened around me. “Okay. We’ll set up the private table behind the stage?”

“Is there a show on for tonight?”

  “No.”

  “Perfect.”

You would think that we wanted to keep our—well, I would call it a threesome except for the fact that the jealousy between Julian and Leo could erupt like spontaneous combustion—quiet. However, it was the perfect timing to reinforce the pact made previously between the vampires and the werewolves. The pact barely existed. Both species had been at war for several centuries and had recently reached a tentative truce in the agreement to share the wolf queen who was also the vampire mistress. It wasn’t what either side wanted, but there was no other way to handle our unusual situation. Without Leo’s contact, I’d go insane. And without Julian to keep depleting my ever-growing blood supply, I’d die, triggering his death with our human servant connection. What better place than Bang’s to reinforce our relationship? Magical symbols were painted on the doors to calm tempers. If a supernatural grew violent, his strength was stripped away, leaving him helpless. Humans were handled easier. When they left the bar, symbols were painted on the doorway that triggered a magic spell so they would “forget” what they knew about supernaturals from that night.

I would wear the leather bustier he’d bought for me recently. It was a little more snug now and my fuller breasts would be pushed up over the top. A high empire-waist long skirt would fit nicely with the corset, and would feel more comfortable against my tighter belly.

Having Leo wear leather served two purposes. Not only was it a treat for my eyes, but I could wear leather myself. Leo would think it was to match him, but Julian would love it on me because it was his favorite.

  * * * * *

Later that night, Julian left me sitting at the table while he waited at the front door to escort Leo in when he arrived. Nervously, I traced tiny circles on the marble tabletop as I pondered how I'd break the news. Leo frequently formed calming circles against my skin. Hopefully I could do the same calming effect on myself.

The drapes parted and both my men entered. I rose from the chair and twin sets of golden gazes flitted casually over my exposed cleavage. The magical triangle that bound all three of us together had changed our eye colors, giving us all amber eyes to match Leo's.

When Leo arrived, he kissed me roughly, as though we’d been apart for more than one day. He understood he wouldn’t be the one to have me that evening.

Julian’s kiss was more brief, but it hadn’t been that long ago that he wouldn’t have followed a kiss after Leo’s without wrinkling his nose in disgust. They'd come such a long way.

When we sat, I plunged in. “Curious as to why we’re hanging out together?”

“Yes,” Julian said while Leo simply nodded.

“I wanted more information on why a child between the three of us would be impossible.”

Leo gave Julian a look that said: Poor thing. She just can’t accept the truth.

Months ago, during a spell to retrieve lost memories, I'd discovered I'd lost a child and could no longer conceive. While I’d never really expected children, knowing I’d lost one had been hard.

“Anjelia,” Leo said gently, taking my hand. “We’ve been over this. Both fallopian tubes were damaged, therefore preventing an egg from traveling through. And even if they were whole, or if we explored in vitro fertilization, my sperm isn
t viable with humans. That’s why we bite our mates, infecting them with the werewolf gene.”

“I am infected with the wolf gene.”

“Yes, but not naturally. Just like you carry vampire tendencies, yet you are not a vampire. Not wholly. You’re a balanced mixture of the two, but reproduction isn’t possible for us.”

“My sweet, if a child is really that important to you, I would consider adoption. Is that where this is going?” Julian asked.

“Sort of,” I answered, vaguely. “How about you, Leo? How badly would you like a child?”

“My wolf would prefer a child with your genes, my love. Rather than adoption, I’d like to see you swell with child. We can look into sperm donors, but I honestly don’t know how my instincts would react, knowing you carried the child of another.”

  “Even if it were Julian’s?”

Julian opened his mouth, but I cut in quickly. “Oh, I know it’s not possible to have viable sperm after centuries of being dead, Julian. I’m just supposing here.”

“It would be difficult,” Leo conceded. “But I’d accept Julian’s over a stranger.”

“So, under normal circumstances, you’d both be willing to be fathers? With me?”

“Of course, but we’re not normal,” Julian reminded gently.

“That brings me to my next point,” I said quickly. “We’re not normal and nothing ever goes as it’s supposed to. I was supposed to die and I didn’t. I wasn’t supposed to be able to accept black magic, and I did. I’m supposed to be barren,” my voice trailed to a whisper. “And I’m not.”

  Chapter Two

Leo chose his words carefully. “What do you mean, you’re not?”

“I’m not barren. I’m pregnant and I’m guessing it’s yours.”

I stood, pulling my hand from his so I could push my high-waist skirt down far enough to expose the softly rounded belly underneath the short corset. Neither one had commented on my changing weight in the last few weeks, with Leo assuming I ate better at the vamp quarters and Julian assuming I ate more at Leo’s.
