Chapter 1
҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉
He pulled his cock out of me, and with it came the results of our forbidden fuck-up. Alone in the room, I was left to deal with my thoughts. How did this even happen? How the hell did I just let Josh, my goddamned stepbrother, put his dick inside of me? As a child, he always drove me nuts. How could he drive me so crazy as an adult?
I hadn’t seen him in years, and after only four days, I had let this happen.
But goddamn, those tattoos… those muscles… that horrible attitude. He had become everything that drove me wild. I just couldn’t say no.
Four days earlier…
“Dad, there’s not a fucking chance I’m going on a date with another one of those dirtbags!” I screamed.
“Don’t talk to me like that. You will do exactly as I say,” he responded, raising a finger at me.
“I don’t have to do anything that I don’t want to do.”
“You’re my daughter, and I’m tired of seeing you hang around with those useless excuses for men. It’s time you grew up and found someone who can actually provide for you, because I’m not going to be around forever.”
“You just don’t get it,” I said before turning to leave.
“Where do you think you’re going?” he yelled after me.
“Mary’s house!” I called back before slamming the front door behind me.
I walked to the Mercedes my dad had gotten for me on my sixteenth birthday. We had all the money in the world. Why did it matter who I dated?
On my way to Mary’s, I put on my favorite playlist and cranked the speakers, singing along to help me forget about my dad and his controlling attitude. I pulled out my phone and sent her a text to let her know I was on my way.
When I got to her place, she was already outside, waiting for me.
“Don’t get out,” she said, running to the passenger side as I opened my door. Mary climbed into the car next to me.
“Why not?” I asked, still holding the door partway open.
“We’re going somewhere to help you forget about your dad.”
“I like the sounds of that,” I replied, shutting my door again and pulling the car out in reverse. “Where to?”
Mary grinned. “It’s a secret.”
“You know I don’t like secrets.”
“Too bad. Turn left.”
Mary joined me, singing along with our favourite tunes as she directed me through the increasingly empty streets lined with abandoned warehouses. Eventually, we ended up at our destination.
“It’s called The Underground,” Mary said with a smile. “It’s full of those bad-boy types you love.”
I looked up at the building. “Sounds like my type of place!”
The outside looked just like all of the other abandoned warehouses that we’d passed on the way here. Mary led me to the unmarked door in the front and the two of us stepped into a small room where we were greeted by a pair of bouncers.
“Names?” one of them asked as he pulled out his clipboard.
“Mary Williams, and this is my friend, Tess.”
The man with the clipboard nodded to the other, who then opened the door for us. Inside, the music was classic rock, but not loud enough to be a club like I was expecting. I was still able to hear the conversations of people in my immediate area.
To add to that, everyone was dressed in expensive clothes and looked more like the types of guys that my dad would want me to date. “What is this?” I asked Mary.
“Just wait,” she said. “Trust me.”
“Okay,” I mumbled.
The two of us navigated through the thin crowd, Mary leading the way. She took us all the way to the other side where there was a long hallway, again guarded by two beefy bouncers. Each one of them stood at least two feet taller than us and about twice as wide.
“Mary Williams,” she said without even hesitating, and the two men stepped aside. I could never figure out how she did it, but Mary always had connections, no matter where we went.
As we walked into the back, I started to wonder what the hell she was up to, but I trusted her with my life. Mary had never lead me astray before, and I knew tonight would be no different. Some of the best nights of my life had started out with feelings like this.
Eventually, the two of us turned a corner into a room full of tattoos, wife-beaters, and lean muscles.
That’s what I’m talkin’ about! I thought to myself as I scanned the room full of rebellion.
“Just act innocent and flirtatious,” Mary called to me over her shoulder as she walked to the bar. I followed.
We each ordered a drink, and it didn’t take long for one of the delicious bad boys to approach us. One of the fucking hottest guys I’d ever seen in my life, in fact. He had long, messy black hair down to his shoulders and eyes that flashed with a dark intensity. His body was well-defined and he was covered in tattoos.
He was exactly what I needed tonight.
“What are you doing in here?” he asked.
“Ordering a drink,” I replied. I gave him a smile before turning back to the bartender and pretending to ignore him.
“They usually don’t let girls like you in the back,” the sexy stranger said, leaning against the bar on one elbow.
“Trust me, I’m not a girl like me.”
“No? Well, you sure look like one.” He smirked. It was to-die-for. “My name is Alex.”
“Tess,” I replied, trying not to act too interested yet.
Then I heard another voice approaching from behind us. A familiar voice. One that I definitely recognized but couldn’t quite put a finger on. “Well, well, well.”
I turned to see who it was.
No way, I thought. My jaw dropped to the floor. He waltzed up to the three of us, those broad shoulders swinging as his white tank top clung to his skin. He had buzz cut hair, and there was no way that I could forget those piercing blue eyes.
Josh.
“I’ll be damned!” he said as he got up close to us. “It’s been, what, seven years now?”
“Something like that,” I muttered and turned back to the bar. Alex took that as his cue to leave and immediately circled around to flirt with Mary, instead.
What the fuck is he doing here?
“I always knew you’d miss me, sis,” he said, taking the space that Alex had just vacated beside me.
“I don’t miss you, and I’m not your sis,” I snapped.
This was the man—rather, the boy—who had tormented me as a child. The very same one who left me alone with my father and his mother. If I did miss him, that would be the only reason. I took a sip of my gin and tonic.
“Look at you, all grown up,” he said, looking up and down my body and biting the side of his lower lip.
“What are you lookin’ at?” I asked, starting to feel uncomfortable around him all over again.
“Nothing. I just never expected you to turn out like this,” he said.
“Josh, you’re up!” I heard a man call from behind us.
“Ah, that’s my cue,” Josh said, signalling the man by raising one hand in the air. I snuck another peak at him. I hadn’t expected him to turn out like this, either. “Call me,” he said with that w
olfish grin as he turned to leave.
I didn’t even know his number, or that he was still alive up until now.
Mary turned away from Alex. “That’s your brother?” she whispered.
“Stepbrother,” I corrected her.
“Close enough. Is he single?”
I grit my teeth, trying to control my temper. “I have no idea.”
Just then, I noticed the crowd of sexy men begin to file out. “What’s going on?” I asked Mary.
“The fight’s going to begin soon,” she said. “Come on.”
“The fight?” I asked. “You know I don’t like that kind of thing.”
“It’s the only place I could think to take you that would have this many hot guys. Just look the other way when it starts. We’ll all be back here soon.” She grabbed my hand and pulled me with the crowd.
When we got back to the main area, the crowd was quieter and so was the music. There was a huge, raised boxing ring in the middle of the room that was now the center of attention. How the hell did I miss that when we came in?
The lights around us went dim and spotlights lit the ring. I crossed my arms, unamused that Mary had dragged me to a place like this. Even more unamused that my stepbrother from seven years ago was here. He didn’t even come visit the house.
The referee stood up in the center of the ring and began to introduce the first fight of the night.
“In the blue corner, last week’s champion and this week’s favorite, Chet Tatem!”
The crowd roared as he climbed into the ring. I immediately realized that he wasn’t wearing much equipment, only some shorts and thin gloves. This wasn’t even boxing. It was street fighting.
“And in the red corner,” the ref began, “fresh blood all the way from Seattle, Josh Steele!”
Jesus! I cursed inwardly as I saw him step into the ring. What the hell was he doing up there?
“Hey, Tess,” Mary said, nudging me. “Isn’t that your brother?”
“Stepbrother,” I corrected again, making sure she got the message this time.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever. But isn’t that him up there?”
My gaze returned to the ring where he was now standing with his arms in the air, trying to pump up the crowd a bit, but they weren’t having it. Chet was the clear favorite here.
“Yeah, that’s him,” I said, my stomach swelling up into my throat.
I had no plans to actually watch the fight, but now I couldn’t take my eyes off the ring. The two of them punched fists and stepped off, putting their guard up. The bell rang and the fight was on.
They each circled around the ring, trying to find their opponent’s weak points while not exposing their own. Chet made the first move, trying to fake out Josh and hit him with a side jab. I was glad to see that he was experienced enough to know what was happening and could dodge a punch.
Chet tried again, but this time Josh countered with a swift blow to the jaw and the crowd let out a surprised groan. Chet winced at the blow and I could feel my emotions spiral. I didn’t want him to be up there, but if he was, I didn’t want to see him get his ass kicked.
Josh wasn’t giving Chet any openings, and he wasn’t making the first move. The two of them circled around the ring again, patiently waiting until Josh started taking a few jabs, which Chet blocked effortlessly.
I could feel my heart racing in my chest. Chet took a swing and clocked Josh on the side of the head. The two of them appeared evenly matched, in my inexperienced eyes, anyway.
The bell dinged again and the two of them let their guard down as they returned to their corners to get some water and a pep talk.
“He’s quite the fighter,” Mary said. “There might be a lot of people losing a lot of money tonight.”
“Losing a lot of money?” I questioned.
“Yeah, every single one of these guys is probably all in on Chet. It might be interesting to see him taken down a notch. I’m gonna cheer for your hot brother.”
I glared at her, both for dragging me to an illegal fighting ring and for not getting that he was my stepbrother. In the end, though, I couldn’t say that it was the worst place she’d dragged me to.
The fighters stood back up and resumed their brawl. This time, they weren’t taking it easy. Chet came out swinging and Josh blocked every one of his blows before sending him reeling backward with an uppercut. When I saw Josh’s face, I could see that evil grin he used to give me when he had me pinned on the ground, knowing he had the upper hand. I surprised myself when I cheered with Mary as the rest of the men in the room started realizing their money was lost to the newcomer.
Chet spit on the ground and stood back up, acting as if it never happened. Josh looked like he’d had enough of playing around and came out swinging this time, but now Chet was the one to block the punches. He blocked five or six before taking a swing of his own, hitting Josh right in the kidney. I winced for him as his guard went down and Chet got another swing in on his face.
Josh was sent to the ground and the crowd cheered. The ref counted him out and the fight was over, just like that.
I felt the pit of my stomach turning as I watched, waiting for him to get up. After a few moments he lifted himself onto his elbow but fell back down and I realized the fight was definitely over. The air in the room turned to excitement almost immediately, but I couldn’t share in that. I ran up to the ring and followed the men who were carrying Josh to the back.
They entered another hallway, but the bouncers stopped me from going any further. Mary came up from behind a few seconds later and gained us entry. I found him lying down on a cot with a man checking out his eyes.
“What the hell were you doing up there?” I scolded him.
“Relax. I don’t usually lose like that,” he said.
“Doesn’t look like that to me,” I said, folding my arms.
“He won’t beat me again. I just got cocky with you in the audience.”
“Just get a day’s rest and you’ll be fine,” the doctor said before leaving the room.
“Looks like you’re the one missing me,” I said as I stepped closer.
“Why’s that?” he laughed.
“Now that you don’t have me to beat up on, you’re out there getting your ass handed to you.”
“I told you, I don’t usually lose.”
“Whatever,” I said, rolling my eyes.
“I’ll show you,” he groaned, getting up from the bed and wincing.
“What are you doing?”
“Showing you who’s boss,” Josh replied as he wrapped his arms around me and pressed on the back of my knees to take me to the ground. He pinned me there with his weight. I couldn’t move.
“Goddammit, get off me!” I yelled at him. Then I heard Mary giggling.
Josh freed me and I stood back up, brushing myself off.
“I should go,” Josh said, leaving just Mary and I in the room together.
“He’s kinda hot, you have to admit,” Mary said with a grin.
“You are not touching him,” I snapped at her.
“Not touching him, then,” she confirmed.
“Good, but I’m ready to go home now. Let’s go.”
“What? But what about Alex, or any of the other hunks in that room?”
“I’m just not really in the mood anymore.”
Chapter 2
҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉
My thoughts raced the entire day after. I kept returning to that moment when Josh had me pinned to the ground. He had gotten so much stronger and his moves were so much more refined. Back when we were kids, I could at least struggle a bit, but this time he had rendered me completely helpless.
On top of that, why did he have to become exactly the type of guy I was constantly falling head over heels for? I wasn’t sure if it was the rebellious attitude or those muscles that had me reeling. Maybe it was because I couldn’t have him. All I knew was that I felt something a lot different when he pinned me down. Something that I felt ashamed of.
r /> It probably didn’t matter anyway. Who knew how long he’d been back in town for already, and if he hadn’t even contacted us after all these years away, then I seriously doubted that he had any plans to.
I shouldn’t have been as upset as I was, but I couldn’t help it. When he’d first disappeared all those years ago, I was happy. Then angry. Eventually, though, I learned to deal with it. Now that he was back, I had so many questions.
