Stepbrother Underground: Forbidden. Raw. Dangerous.

  “I doubt that,” I replied.

“Well maybe not as bad… but still, I’ve done some pretty nasty things. You’re making me wish I had a stepbrother as hot as Josh. Maybe I could join you guys one day?”

  “Mary!” I snapped at her.

“Okay, okay. But it doesn’t hurt to ask,” she said with that sly smile.

“He asked me to go somewhere with him.”

  “Where?”

“I don’t know, just… away. He told me that my father kicked him out all those years ago and he didn’t actually run away willingly. He wants me to start a new life, just like he did.”

“Wow… And what did you say?”

“I just left.” I said, ashamed. “What was I supposed to say? We had just fucked and I was still tied to the bed. My emotions were all over the place. I wanted to go. I wanted to say yes, but I couldn’t.”

“Oh, you naughty girl,” Mary said. “Tied to the bed?”

  “Mary, this is serious.”

“Okay, sorry.” She did her best to put her serious face back on. “I think you should follow your heart.”

“I don’t know if I can do that. I barely know him anymore. I mean, look at him now...”

“Well, if you ever get into trouble, you can just call me. I’ll get you out of whatever mess you’re in.”

“Are you serious? You think I should go?”

“No, I think you should follow your heart.”

Our eyes locked, and I was grateful to have a friend like Mary. I wrapped my arms over her shoulders and tears began to stream down from my eyes. “Thank you,” I said.

My phone buzzed on the table beside us and Mary and I let go of one another. I looked down at it to discover a text from Josh.

I’m sorry, Tess. I never should have asked you what I did. Goodbye.

  Chapter 14

  ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉ ҉

“What? He’s leaving now?” Mary said, reading the text with me.

“I guess so,” I said shakily. “He never told me when he was leaving.”

“We gotta go!” Mary said, standing up. “Where is he?”

  “Some hotel, downtown.”

“Let’s go. You can give me the directions on the way.”

Mary and I sprung from our seats and ran into her garage. We jumped into her car and waited for the painfully slow opening of the garage door. As soon as there was enough room for her car to slide under, Mary hit the gas.

As we got onto the freeway, she cranked the tunes. “I need this,” she said. I smiled to cover the panic that was pulsing through my heart.

We weaved in and out of cars, racing as fast as we could to stop Josh before he left town. The closer we got, the more my hope faded. Josh wasn’t the type of man to give warning of his departure. The fact that I got that text meant he had already left.

My eyes caught on the glimmer of a motorcycle in the opposite lane.

“Mary! It’s him, it’s him!” I screamed over the music and pointing at Josh.

“What? Are you sure?” she said, turning down the volume so that we could hear each other.

“Yeah! Exit here, go after him!”

“Got it!” She smiled and put two hands on the wheel.

Mary had to cut someone off to get out in time, and their horn blared as we slowed down up the exit ramp. She turned the car left, over the bridge, and right back down going the opposite way.

We were on our way to stop him. To stop my stepbrother from leaving me again. I had never felt such a rush of excitement in my entire life.

The two of us continued weaving in and out of cars until Josh’s back was within view. Soon we could hear the roar of his motorcycle coming into the open windows as my hair blew in the wind. Mary slowed down, Josh now beside me.

I yelled and he glanced over at the car before looking back in front of him. Did he not care? I yelled again.

This time, his eyes met mine and I could see his face scrunch, even though he had his big aviator sunglasses on. He slowed down and pulled out the next exit, me and Mary behind him.

I jumped out of the car as we stopped. Josh silenced his roaring motorcycle and climbed off as I ran up behind him.

“What are you doing here?” he asked as he turned around and saw me. I threw my arms around his neck and pressed my cheek against his chest.

“You thought you could just leave like that?” I said, looking up into his eyes.

“I thought you made it pretty clear last night,” he said quietly.

“I’m sorry. I never should have left like that.”

“Well, seeing as you’re here now, I still have the spare helmet in my compartment.”

A million thoughts rushed through my mind. I wasn’t prepared at all for this. This wasn’t something you could just do. Or was it?

“I can’t,” I said, looking him deep in the eyes. “I don’t even have a change of clothes.”

“Hold on,” Mary said from behind as she dug in her purse. “Here.” She pulled out a credit card and extended it to me. “The PIN’s four-nine-two-eight, and there’s a thousand dollars on it. Buy what you need when you get where you’re going.”

  “What? But Mary—” I started.

“No ifs, ands, or buts. You’d do the same for me if you could. Take it.”

I grabbed the card and smiled before pulling her in for a tight hug. “You’re the best,” I whimpered, trying to hold back the tears.

“I’ll come visit you,” she said, pulling back. Her face was covered in a sad smile.

“You better,” I said, forcing some humor into the situation as we shared one last laugh.

I turned back to Josh, who was removing some clothes that he had stuffed into the spare helmet to save space in his tiny compartment. “Well, this is probably the stupidest decision of my life, but I’m ready.”

Josh smiled and handed me the helmet. “You won’t regret it. I’ll show you a life you’ll never want to run from.”

The two of us climbed on his bike and the metal hummed between my legs. He lifted the kickstand and began driving, taking me away from everything I ever knew. Away from everything I ever cared about.

  Away from Mary.

I looked behind me to see her waving from the top of the overpass. I let go of Josh with one hand and waved back to her before returning my attention to the road ahead.
