  “You good?”

“I’m wonderful,” she said faintly with a grin.

He chuckled. “Yes, you are.” He started moving his hips. In and out. “Wrap your legs around me, Kendra.” She did and he put his hand under her butt to pull her tighter against him. “Move with me.” When her hips moved up to meet his, he groaned. “Christ, you feel good.”

“Cooper, you feel amazing. Kiss me, please.”

Cooper put his lips to hers, and kissed her deep and hard. His tongue thrust into her mouth as he started moving faster and harder against her. Each time her hips rose to meet his, he had to concentrate to keep from losing it too soon.

“I’m not going to last, Kendra. I need to...” He groaned and moved faster. He felt her clutching around him as she came again. She rose up, and bit his shoulder. He grunted and thrust harder into her. “Kendra, I’m...Christ!” Cooper came hard, harder than he can remember, and then collapsed on top of her. They lay there panting. Her arms fell from around his neck. He raised his head and stared at her. Her face was flush, her lips parted as she tried to catch her breath, and her hair was damp on her temples from sweat. He leaned down and kissed her softly. “Damn that was good, darlin’.”

She nodded her head making him laugh as he rolled to his side and pulled her against him. She put her head on his shoulder and flung her arm across his waist.

“I’ve never felt anything like that before, Cooper. It was...amazing.”

  “Yes,” he panted.

Her fingers ran down his chest to his abs. “Do you work out? You have an amazing body.”

“Some, but most of my muscles are from working the ranch. Tossing eighty pound bales of hay will make some muscles.” She started to sit up when he pulled her back down. “Where are you going? It’s too early yet. I need to rest if we’re going to do that again.”

He heard her sigh, and when she snuggled against him, he smiled as sleep quickly threatened to take him back again.

The sun shining across her face through the blinds woke Kendra. She wondered what time it was. Glancing to the pillow beside her, she discovered she was alone. Cooper was gone. She sat up, swung her legs over the side of the bed, and looked for her clothes. Her jeans were on the floor at the end of the bed, her bra, and shirt on the floor alongside the bed. She had to get up and look for her panties. She found them on top of the dresser. Cooper must have tossed them when he removed them earlier this morning.

She looked around the room for the first time since entering it the night before. It was a big room. The large king-size bed sat centered against one wall, a row of windows took up another. A dresser beside a doorway leading to the bathroom made up another wall and the door leading out had a huge closet beside it. She quickly dressed, made a quick trip to the bathroom, and tiptoed out of the room. How was she going to face him after what they’d done all morning? She could feel the blush moving into her face.

Cooper woke her twice more during the early hours of the morning and each time, it was better than the time before. The man sure knew how to make a woman feel good. Good? Fucking fantastic. He made sure she was satisfied before he gave in to his own pleasure. He had her straddle him one time, and then he took her from behind another. She shivered with delight thinking about that second time. When he sat back on his haunches and pulled her back to him, she took control. She ground her hips down over him and reached down to massage his balls. She snickered when she remembered she almost squeezed too hard when she felt her orgasm taking ahold of her. Cooper had quickly grabbed her wrist.

“You really have something against my balls,” he’d muttered.

She’d burst out laughing. “You could say that.”

“Smart ass. I don’t mean you’re against my balls, I meant you have something against them, as in you hate them.” He’d laughed.

She’d laughed, making him growl and push her forward. He’d pounded into her taking them both over the cliff.

Kendra made her way to the kitchen and peered inside. He was nowhere around. Where was he? She was about to head for the door when it flew open and he walked in. He came to a dead stop when he saw her. She folded her arms across her chest and narrowed her eyes at him. She watched as he tried not to grin.

  “You owe me breakfast, Lang.”

He walked toward her and stopped in front of her. “I did promise you breakfast, didn’t I?”

  “Yep.”

He leaned down and kissed her. “What would you like?” he murmured against her lips.

Kendra couldn’t stop the groan, but then she smiled. “Pancakes.”

Cooper reared back. “That’s not what I was thinking.”

  Kendra laughed. “I know.”

Cooper shook his head. “I said it before and I’ll say it again, you’re an evil woman.”

She walked around him and took a seat at the table. “Get busy. I’m hungry.”

Cooper washed his hands at the sink. “The lady wants pancakes. So pancakes she will get.”

Kendra laughed. “Snap to it, Lang.”

Cooper spun around. “Only if you agree to go riding with me.”

“I love going on the bike.”

“Horseback. I have a couple of heifers I need to check on.”

“Sure. I’d like that.” Kendra raised her eyebrow at him. “Now, how about those pancakes?”

He strode over to the table and cupped her face in his hands, leaned down and kissed her. “Are you sure I can’t talk you into going back to the bedroom for a while?”

“You probably can, but how about after the ride?”

Cooper blew out a breath. “All right. Pancakes coming up.”

  ****

Jasper wasn’t going to like this at all, Tyler thought as he called his boss. Jasper answered on the first ring.

“Where in the fuck have you been? You’re supposed to check in every God damn day,” Jasper growled.

“Good morning to you too. For your information, I sat across from Lang’s driveway all night after following them to dinner.”

“You should have called me when you followed her back home.”

Tyler cleared his throat. “She, uh, hasn’t gone home yet.”

  “What?” Jasper roared.

“She’s still at his place.” Tyler couldn’t keep the smile from emerging. He also knew if Jasper could see him, he’d kill him where he stood.

“Are you telling me she slept with him?”

“Well, in all honesty, I can’t say that. They could have slept in separate rooms. I can’t see inside the house.”

“Fuck you, Conrad. I can’t believe you didn’t call me last night to tell me about this.”

“Because I knew you wouldn’t have slept—”

“I haven’t slept anyway! You’d better never do this again. I’m sending someone to help you out.”

“Who?” Tyler had a bad feeling about this.

“Gil Woodard. He should be there tomorrow. I want you to stay with him for a while to show him Lang.”

“Are you out of your mind, Jasper? You only call Gil in when you want something illegal done. What the fuck are you up to?”

“You don’t need to worry about it. I just need him to keep an eye on Lang while you watch Kendra.”

  “That’s it?”

“Of course. What else could it be?”

Tyler didn’t believe him. “I won’t be a part of anything illegal.”

  “You won’t be,” Jasper snapped.

“I think it’s time you told me why you’re so obsessed with her. I mean, she is beautiful but you’re divorced now.”

“She’s always loved Lang. I found out when her mother sent a box to the house and it had all her old notebooks in it. She had his name written all over them.”

“Written all over them?” Tyler frowned. “How long ago was this?”

  “She was fifteen.”

“Fifteen? Are you fucking kidding me? She had a teenage crush and you’re holding that
against her?” Tyler laughed. “You’ve gone over the deep edge, Jasper.”

“Keep an eye on her,” Jasper growled then hung up.

Tyler sighed. The crazy son of a bitch. Jasper had him following his ex-wife because she’d had a crush on Lang when she was a teenager. Holy fuck! The man was insane. If he didn’t need the money, he’d say fuck it and go home, but the gambling debts needed to be paid and this was the way to do that. He also needed a shower and a woman. To hell with this. He was going back to the hotel to shower, and then find a woman. He had a feeling that Kendra wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon anyway. If she did, he’d catch up with her later. The damn town was the size of a postage stamp.

  ****

Cooper set a plate of pancakes down in front of Kendra. She smiled up at him and his heart stopped. Mentally shaking his head, he got the syrup and butter out for her.

“Aren’t you eating?” Kendra asked him.

“I already ate. Some of us got our asses out of bed earlier than others.”

“I have no idea why you’d want to do that.”

Cooper leaned down and put one hand on the table in front of her and the other on the back of her chair. “I had a hell of a time getting out of that bed this morning when I looked over and saw you there looking so...sweet.” He pressed his lips to hers.

“Then you shouldn’t have. Now move away, Lang. I’m hungry.”

Cooper chuckled. “So am I darlin’. So am I.”

Kendra smiled and picked her fork up and ate. The pancakes were mouthwatering. “You can cook for me anytime, Cooper.”

Cooper sat down with a cup of coffee. “I don’t have a problem with that. Do you want to go home and change clothes before we go riding?”

“No. I’m not afraid of getting dirty and if I get these clothes so dirty they won’t come clean, I’ll just buy new ones. It’s not like these jeans are expensive.”

“All right.” He stood and walked to the sink. “I’ll go saddle the horses. Come out when you’re ready.” He kissed the top of her head and left.

Kendra grinned as she watched him head out the door. After finishing her breakfast, she rinsed the plate off, and then remembered she wore heels last night. She put them on and walked outside to head for the barn. Stepping inside the building, she waited for her eyes to adjust, and then immediately saw Cooper. He was walking two horses toward her. She bit her lip to keep from groaning. He was the essential cowboy today for sure. Her eyes roamed over him from the top of his black Stetson, down over his red T-shirt, stopping at the fly of his jeans. They hugged his sex and she now knew what was behind that fly. She shivered deliciously. He grinned at her and she swore he knew what she was thinking.

“We have a problem,” she told him.

He stopped walking toward her and raised an eyebrow. “What?”

  “I don’t have any shoes.”

Cooper burst out laughing. “I can get you a pair of cowboy boots.”

  “I can’t wear your boots.”

  “There are smaller pairs here.”

“Oh really?” She narrowed her eyes.

“Yep. Snuffy’s granddaughter always seems to leave some here.”

  “Snuffy?”

“My manager. His granddaughter always rides when she visits.” He turned to walk away from her, and then glanced back. “Come on. We’ll see if Snuffy has any you can use.”

“All right,” she said as she followed him outside to a small house located behind the barn. They walked up onto the porch and Cooper knocked on the door. Kendra watched as it opened and a small man stood in the doorway. He smiled at Cooper, and then his eyes widened when he saw her. He gave her a nod and looked back to Cooper.

“Snuffy, this is Kendra Mattingly. Kendra, this is my manager, Snuffy Milton.” He turned to Snuffy. “We’re planning on going riding but as you can see, she doesn’t have the right shoes.” Cooper grinned.

Kendra could feel the heat pour into her cheeks when Snuffy looked down to her feet.

“I can see that.” Snuffy laughed.

“Do you have any of your granddaughter’s boots here that maybe she could borrow?”

“I’m sure I do. Come on in.” Snuffy stood aside and let them enter his home. It was a small house but immaculately clean. Kendra was impressed with the layout of the home, a large open living room with windows facing the back pasture. A set of French doors led to a small deck. The small kitchenette boasted gleaming white appliances. She watched as Snuffy walked down a hallway and entered a room. He came back out carrying a pair of small cowboy boots.

  Kendra laughed. “Pink?”

“She’s eight, what do you expect?” He laughed as he handed her the boots. “I hope they fit.”

Kendra looked inside and smiled. “Size four. Perfect.”

  “You wear a size four?”

“Five, but little girls size four is close to a five in women’s.” She reached inside and pulled out a pair of socks. “Great. Socks too.” She smiled. “Thank you, Snuffy.”

“You’re welcome. You two have fun.”

“I’ll see you later, Snuff. Come on Kendra, let’s go riding.” Cooper took her hand as they left Snuffy’s home.

  “He seems nice,” she said.

“He’s the best. Been here since my dad took over the ranch. I don’t know what I’d do without him.” He led her to the horse. “Do you need a leg up?” he asked after she put the boots on.

“Excuse me? I’ve been riding since I was in diapers. Back off,” she teased as she grabbed the saddle horn and hoisted herself onto the saddle. She looked down at him and smiled as he adjusted the stirrups for her.

He laughed and vaulted onto the saddle of his horse. “Let’s go then.” He led them out of the barn and toward the west pasture.

  Chapter Ten

Cooper glanced behind him to see Kendra following him. She was gazing around the pasture. When she noticed him looking at her, she smiled at him and he felt that stomach drop feeling. He faced forward and rode along slowly.

“How far are we going?” she asked him.

“I want to check on two heifers. They’re both due any day.”

  “All right.”

He stopped his horse and turned in the saddle. “Are you in a hurry to get home?”

“No. I was just curious. I will have to go home when we get back though,” she told him.

  “Why?”

“Because I’ll need to go home.” She frowned at him.

  “Why?”

“Cooper. I can’t stay here all day. I want to relax a little.”

“You can’t do that at my house?”

“You’re being difficult. I want to go home and get a shower then relax...and do not say I can do that here.”

“Well, you could. Can we get together tonight?”

“Yes. What do you want to do?”

Cooper grinned. “You.” Kendra stared at him with a surprised expression, and then burst out laughing making his dick perk up. Son of a bitch! All she had to do was laugh and he was ready to go. He sighed. “I can pick you up at six again. Do you want to go to dinner again?”

“If you want to. What about the movie we didn’t get to last night?”

Cooper nodded. “Sounds good. Come on.” He nudged his horse and took off at a run. When he glanced over his shoulder, she was right with him. The woman knew how to ride. He spotted one of the heifers and stopped his horse. After dismounting, he walked slowly over to her and rubbed her swollen stomach. He glanced at Kendra.

“I think she’ll be a few days yet. Let’s ride a little further to find the other one.” He smiled when Kendra nodded her head. Cooper mounted his horse and they ran them through the high grass. They came up over a rise and Cooper heard one of the cows bawling. He nudged the horse into a run when he saw it was the other pregnant cow. She was stuck in the mud of a dried up pond. Riding up to the pond, he jumped off the horse and stood staring at the cow with his hands on his hips.

  “I’m going to have t
o call one of the men in to help,” he muttered.

“Why? I can help you,” Kendra said.

Cooper turned to look at her. “You’ll get filthy.”

“I’m not some delicate flower, Cooper. I grew up on a cattle ranch.”

“Your white jeans won’t be white anymore.”

“I told you, I don’t care about getting dirty.”

Cooper laughed. “This will be more than dirty. You’ll be caked in mud.”

Kendra shrugged. “Then you can take me home. I have to get cleaned up for dinner later anyway.” She dismounted and walked toward him. “What do you want me to do?”

“I’ll get a rope around her neck and you can use Zeus to try to drag her out. I’ll push from behind. That way you won’t get too dirty.”

“All right.” Kendra walked toward Zeus but the horse moved away from her. “He won’t let me near him.”

Cooper sighed. “We have to use him. Colby won’t pull at all. I know how that horse is.” He walked toward the horse and took hold of the reins to hold him still. “Get on now.”

Kendra grabbed the saddle horn but Zeus moved away from her. She sighed. “I’ll push the cow.”

  “You’ll get filthy.”

“I’ll be fine. I’ll roll up my pant legs and take the boots off. It’ll be like a mud bath for my feet.” She smiled at him.

“If you’re sure? You know there has to be more than mud in there.”

“Yes, I know, but we need to get her out,” Kendra said as she reached down and pulled the boots and socks off then she rolled her pant legs up to above her knees. She straightened up and grinned up at him. It felt as if his heart stopped. He cleared his throat.

“Okay. Get behind her and wait until the rope is tight.”

“Cooper, you’re talking to a country girl here. I know how to do this.”

He nodded and mounted Zeus then he threw the rope around the cow’s neck and nudged Zeus. The horse moved slowly until the rope was taut. Cooper looked over his shoulder. “Okay, push and I’ll pull.” Cooper stayed turned in the saddle to watch as the cow started coming out of the mud. All of a sudden, there was a weird suction sound, and then the sound of Kendra squealing. Cooper stopped the horse after the cow came out of the mud. He looked back to where Kendra was and bit his lip to keep from laughing. She lay face down in the mud. She slowly raised her head and narrowed her eyes at him.
