Heavenly Hunted

That bloody phone in my pocket kept on ringing, I kept on ignoring it also, nothing was as important as this. All of a sudden Nate changed from the defensive and attacked with everything he had. He applied the old ninja I had taught him. God, he looked good out there and he was actually kicking her ass. Blood dripped from Bernie’s lips all over her white shirt. Nate grabbed her from under her neck and pushed her against the car.
“Leave us alone. We don’t want anything to do with you.”
A crazy, frenzied cackle came from Bernie, she found this funny. How can that sick bitch laugh at a time like this? I could see her knee coming up but my warning wasn’t fast enough—within seconds Nate was on the ground cradling his manhood.
Bernie put her hand in her pocket and pulled out a sharp, silver knife, Oh my God, I was still frozen and she was going to kill Nate. I started to scream louder.
“I wasn’t going to kill him, but he’s in my way.”
The school behind us came streaming out. Connor and Mark were both running towards us. Something was wrong, very wrong. The seniors shouldn’t be finishing school for at least two more hours. A howling on top of the school steps caught my attention, Corrina and Casey were crying uncontrollably in each other’s arms.
Bernie faltered in her actions, some smart comment was going to come from her mouth.
“Nate, your father has done his job once again and history repeats itself.”
“What are you talking about?” I was still frozen but my mouth worked fine.
I was missing something here, a freezing chill made its way up my back. If I had a grave, someone would be stomping all over it at this instant.
“Your friends are on their way over but I would rather break the news to you.”
A nasty smirk illuminated Bernie, untainted hatred glared back at me, chilling my insides and solidifying my body.
“What news, psycho?” I snarled through gritted teeth.
“Was one of your friends missing today?” A witchy cackle erupted from her.
“Yes.”
She was talking about Nessa, what was this business about history repeating itself? I thought about Nessa and what she had been doing lately, nothing stuck out except the yucky smell. There was something that I was missing, some larger key to a puzzle, what the frig was it. For some reason I started to think about my two other friends who had met horrible deaths.
Oh no, I don’t fucking think so.
Chapter Thirty-Seven
Nate
Indy had been standing away from Bernie and I, screaming her lungs out. She was going to gain us some very unwanted attention. She had noticed Bernie before I had, I had been too busy planning the rest of our afternoon together in my head.
After a quick verbal bashing from Bernie, she engaged me; I was trying my best to dodge blows and block Bernie’s out of control style of fighting. This girl was very good—more than good—and it took me a small amount of time to detect her flaws that were well hidden behind her fluid, sleek movements.
Bernie took many short cuts, which impacted largely on her ability to effectively defend herself. She went for speed, hoping to get as many hits on her opponents in a short time frame in an effort to cause major damage and win the fight. I also used to take short cuts, but since training Connor, I retrained myself from these.
If I had to guess, in the past, most of the opponents she’s faced haven’t been skillfully trained like me and Indy. I couldn’t work out why Indy couldn’t wipe the floor with her, I was now successfully blocking most of Bernie punches, waiting for the best time to attack. Any second now I was going to break through the fight and take control for myself.
Bernie was so sure of herself. I was about to deliver a hard combination to pull off, her eyes had followed my movements and kept with the blocking, but on the last fighting sequence she hesitated far too long. That was what I had been waiting for. I threw everything into the last two punches.
A small cut on her lip opened up and the more I concentrated on punching her face, the bigger it got, and the blood flowed freely. Punching a girl wasn’t something that I did easily, I had to push through the guilt and remember what she would do to Indy if I backed down. I had one thought only on my mind and that was putting her out of commission for a while, enough time to get away from town and get a good head start. Killing wasn’t an option anymore, I would never kill again.
In an attempt to scare the crap out of Bernie before I broke her legs, I pushed her up against the nearest car and placed my hands around her throat very tightly.
“Leave us alone or I’ll kill you next time.” I faked as much aggression as I could manage.
The most annoying screeching laughter pulsed from Bernie; Indy yelled something loudly. Before I could act, severe pain trembled through my body. My legs gave way. I fell to the ground, holding myself between the legs, that was the dirtiest move and a cowardly act to win a fight. I needed Indy to pull herself out of this state and engage Bernie just until I could stand.
Bernie pulled the biggest knife from her pocket I had seen in a long time. I don’t know how the heck she managed to fit it inside her pocket, but she had. Meaningless words came from her mouth, she was boasting about something I had no idea about. I replied back to Bernie, not really sure of what she was getting at, yes, one of our friends had been absent, but so what?
She had mentioned my father repeating some action he had performed before. I was totally lost. Both Indy and Bernie were absorbed with the conversation. What the hell was Bernie talking about my father for? What does he have to do with this exact moment except for sending Bernie here? More importantly, what the hell has he done?
Connor and Mark were running over to us, my attention had been on them, pulling my eyes away, I looked at Indy. Bernie’s words had triggered some change to take place in her—oh shit. Blackness started swirling inside her body, taking over every miniscule space that was this fallen angel. The goodness which was Indy became evil and unkind, standing this close to her, I had a sense of complete dread. The air around Indy felt suffocating and radiated death.
Bernie dropped the knife on the ground and started to run, the battle scream coming from Indy was terrifying, everything about Indy was chilling. I threw myself at her, the smell made me want to vomit, my adrenalin was toxic, I had to fight through it and not attack her.
This Indy I held onto was a different person, there was no angelic soul inside her, only a demonic presence, and I knew what she was going to do. I couldn’t hold her anymore. Breaking free of my hold, she sprinted after Bernie. I had tried so hard to hold onto Indy, to save any soul she had left from damnation, but she was far too powerful for me.
Somehow, the act of Indy opening herself up to the this pure evil had intensified her strength far beyond my own. That’s why Bernie had run, she sensed the change and was running for her life.
Connor and Mark came up to me.
“What the hell is going on? Why did Indy flip the switch?” I yelled to Connor.
“It’s Nessa—she’s—”
“Oh no, is this what my father had done?”
I left the boys and tore down the road as fast as I could go, they both followed me. The fact that they were both athletes gave them an advantage when it came to keeping up with me. This new Indy had caught up to Bernie and cornered her in an alley, the one we normally took to school.
Bernie now looked terrified. Her face had been the target of quite a few blows, blood dripped from her lips and a large gash was upon her cheek. Indy was screaming into her face, blackness surrounded her soul.
“Where is Nessa?”
“I don’t know, he has her.”
“Is she alive or dead? God help you if she is the latter.”
Connor was on his phone to someone now, he spoke frantically into the receiver, begging for help. I needed more answers, the boys hadn’t finished telling me what they knew before I took off.
“Mark, what’s going on?”
“Nessa
didn’t turn up to school today, she text her parents she was staying at Indy’s.”
Mark was calming himself down, trying to get the facts right. I gave him as much time as he needed.
“When she didn’t turn up for school today and you guys did, Brandon got a little worried and rang her parents.”
“She didn’t stay at our house.” I shook my head, worried.
Mark was near the point of hyperventilating. I placed my hand on his shoulder, trying to give him some strength. I wished I had powers like Max.
“Brandon, Nessa’s parents and the police all tried to ring her, but she didn’t answer. Then they tried to ring Indy, who wasn’t answering her phone.”
I tried to push Mark to speak the last few words, he took large intakes of air. Connor was still on his phone speaking to someone.
“Her dad went to the last place she was meant to be and there was blood all over the place. The police were called and Nessa is officially missing,” said Mark.
Oh my God, this is bad—Indy had already put all of the pieces together and was going to do anything to get the last piece.
“Where is she, Bernie?” yelled Indy.
Indy had her hands around Bernie’s neck and was squeezing her tightly, a blue tinge spread across her face, no answer came from her, so Indy squeezed tighter. I went up to Indy and tried to reason with her.
“Indy, you can’t kill her,” I said.
Indy looked at Bernie, her facial features were twisted with hatred. “Tell me everything NOW.”
Bernie opened her mouth, attempting to talk, but Indy was squeezing too tight. She loosened her grip slightly.
“He’s been following you for years, killing all those you become close to. He’s jealous of the relationships you make and wants to wreck everything you hold close.”
“Who is he and why is he doing this?”
Bernie looked even more scared now. “Just kill me, I can’t tell you why.”
“Fine, then,” replied Indy, increasing her tight hold on Bernie’s neck.
“STOP, he’s obsessed with you. He has been ever since the first moment he fell in love with you.”
“Mickher, the demon who made me fell from heaven.”
Bernie nodded her head.
Disgust radiated through Indy’s whole body, clean cut hatred darkened Indy’s beautiful eyes to a jet black. Gloomy pits of blackness erupted through Indy’s fingertips, her strength doubled. Without even thinking, she snapped Bernie’s neck and threw her into a pile on the ground.
Indy walked away from the three of us. I was in total shock. Connor was leaning over Mark, who had fainted and was lying face first in the dirt. Connor was barely keeping himself together, I was conflicted in what to do. Indy was on a killing spree but Mark and Connor needed me, also. Hell, I needed help right now. Dear God, please help me.
The end for Now.
