All the King's Henchmen
Page 66
“What is it?” Chris asked.
Callen handed him the box.
“This is my answer,” Callen stated.
With shaking hands, Chris opened the box and pulled back the tissue paper. When he found it, he pulled it out.
It was a plaque.
He read the words, and they touched his heart on such a deep level.
‘Fort Leonard-Whitefox-Blackhawk’
Immediately, tears filled his eyes. That one piece of wood said it all.
“This is your home, too, Chris. Fill it with joy and love,” Callen stated. “You belong to us, and if that little girl is the one, then she belongs to us too.”
“This is the most beautiful gift I’ve ever been given—other than your unconditional love.”
“May I?” Ethan said, holding out his hand.
Chris handed it to him.
Ethan pulled a Sharpie out of the drawer and scribbled something on the sign. Then, he carried it out of the kitchen, not letting them see it.
Callen, Chris, and Elizabeth followed to see what he was doing.
When he placed it on the mantle, besides a picture of Timothy Blackhawk and Charlie LaRue, he stepped back.
‘Fort Leonard-Whitefox-Blackhawk
A Tribe founded in nothing but love.’
That said it all.
“It looks right,” Chris said, tears in his eyes. That one action spoke to his soul. He was home. This was the last part of his life, and he was taking the journey with the most important people.
His family.
His loves.
Elizabeth wrapped her arm around his waist, joining him to her, as Callen mimicked her actions. Ethan moved into place, following suit.
There they stood.
A family.
Again, they heard the windchimes—only, this time, so did Chris.
“Do you hear…?”
They laughed.
“Yeah, Timothy approves,” Ethan stated. “Get accustomed to it. It happens a lot. We’re haunted by a Shaman.”
And that was okay by him.
“Christopher?” she said, touching his cheek.
“Yes?”
“Bring Addison, our new daughter, home.”
And he would.
This twist in the plot was one they hadn’t seen coming or anticipated, but that changed nothing. Sometimes, the best story wasn’t one you expected, but the one that was written with the perfect twist to fate’s well-laid out plans.
Like this.
The Blackhawk, the Whitefox, and the Leonard families had so much more ahead of them.
Most importantly?
They had love.
Forever.

Two Weeks Later
Ethan’s Office
His wife and husband had met him for a little afternoon delight. Yes, Ethan had succumbed, yet again, to sex in his office. Only, that wasn’t the most shocking thing.
No, the day was about to get even weirder, and he had never seen it coming.
As they sat there, having something to eat post-sexiness, there was a knock on his door.
“Are you decent?” Gabe asked.
Elizabeth began laughing.
“Are we ever?” she asked.
Gabe opened the door, and looked in.
“Your new secretary isn’t at her desk, so I wanted to make sure before I came in. If I have to see Elizabeth naked, I’ll vomit.”
“GEE. Thanks. Seeing your dick gives me the willies too.”
Callen laughed.
“We’re having some lunch. Want half?” Ethan offered up part of his sandwich. He knew Gabe rarely got anything fun to eat with Livy prowling. If he was in town, she was policing his food.
“Well, maybe we can have that sandwich after we celebrate.”
Ethan lifted a brow.
“What are we celebrating exactly? Did something happen?” he asked, as Gabe walked over to his liquor cabinet and poured them three drinks.
“Uh oh,” Elizabeth whispered. “He’s possessed. He’s smiling and pouring whiskey at one in the afternoon on a Tuesday. He’s letting me have booze and a gun while he’s in the room. Run!”
He heard her and laughed.
“Actually, I’ve just spoken to my wife, and I need to talk to you about something.”
They still didn’t know what the hell was going on. As of the last week, Gabe had been missing work, acting weird, and they hoped his Cancer wasn’t back.
“Are you okay?” Callen asked. “I mean, healthy?”
“I just had my physical, and I’m incredibly healthy. That’s not why I’m happy.”
Ethan took the glass of whiskey he handed him, and then waited for whatever they were celebrating.
“Is Livy pregnant?” Elizabeth asked, still trying to figure it out. She couldn’t help it. It was a mystery.
She was a sucker for them.
Gabe laughed.
“No, but that would make me happy too. Maybe you can talk to her about that. It might help me out.”
They were confused.
“Help you out?” Callen asked.
“I’ve just been cleared by my doctor, and I’m telling you first, since you’re my family and best friend,” he said to Ethan.
“Uh oh,” she said again.
“What?” Ethan stated.
“I’m running for President of the United States of America.”
They stared at him.
“WHAT?” they all said at the same time.
“Are you kidding?” Ethan asked. “You love your job. You’re king of the world as head of the FBI. What do you mean you’re running for president?”
“I’ve decided that I can’t let Gordon Downing win a second term. I have to help save DC.”
They were flabbergasted.
No.
That was putting it mildly.
Elizabeth didn’t even have anything sarcastic or shitty to say. She was caught off guard.
“Well?” he asked.
“Congrats?” Elizabeth asked. “I’m happy for you and Livy?” she asked again, trying not to make it sound like a question, but that’s how it came out.
He laughed.
He held up his glass.
“To my campaign and all it brings, May I stay the course and not lose my damn mind. Thank you, Elizabeth, for all of the times you made my life hell. If I win, the terrorists have nothing on you!”
“HEY!”
They clinked glasses, still a little surprised. No one had seen this one coming.
NO ONE.
As they sipped, he dropped the second bomb, and that one was even bigger than the first.
“Ethan, I thought long and hard about this, and I want you to run as my running mate for Vice President of the United States!”
Elizabeth and Callen both choked on the amber liquid—and not because of the burn.
Ethan stared in shock. He hadn’t seen that one coming.
“WHAT?” they asked again.
“Be my running mate, Ethan. We can do so much good in the world.”
He looked at the man.
Then his wife.
Then at Callen.
“Gabe.”
“Help me clean it up! You love the power too. What do you say, Ethan?”
His wife stared at him.
“Yeah, what do you say?” she asked.
Callen held his breath and prayed.
Ethan didn’t answer. Instead, he chugged the rest of his drink.
Yeah, what the hell did he say?
