“Mama! Can we go outside and play?” Josie asks, Max nodding eagerly.
“Yes, we can. Give me just a minute. Go wait by the door, but do not open it. Got it?”
“Yes, Mama!” Already halfway there, she hollers, and the giggling and chasing ensues.
“Sadie, can I have a moment with my beautiful wife?” Nick asks.
“Sure! I’ll go ahead and take them outside. See ya in a minute.” As she leaves us, I turn toward him.
“Yes?”
He eyes me over. “Kiss me. Tell me you love me.” He grabs my chin possessively, and my core clenches, rendering me weak. I can’t do anything but comply.
“I love you.” We lock lips, our tongues swiping over one another, his taste one I still crave as if it were the first kiss.
“Mmm. That’s my kitten. Damn you, woman.” He breaks our kiss.
“What was that for?” I ask, out of breath and riled up now.
“Because I just spent the last half hour listening to my kids laugh and, because you picked me, I get to have you and my little ones. I’m a proud man, you could say.”
I bite my lip, his words causing wild butterflies.
“I’ve said this many times over the past three years, but I would choose you every time. Each time. Over and over again. That’s because I love you.”
“I know you do.”
“I should be telling you thank you for loving me through all the highs and lows, and never giving up, and for catching me.”
He searches my eyes and chuckles, cupping my face again. Bringing his nose to mine as our foreheads touch, he whispers, “Fighting for you was never something I would have given up on. I would have followed you to the end. I will follow you to the end. You and me. Salvation and soul.”
“Salvation and soul, my love,” I repeat, bringing my lips to his. A love built from the ashes and wreckage, we made it.
“Loving you, Kate Beckett, is something else.”
“Right back at you, my love.”
