‘Mum, Dad, horsie win. Horsie win!’ Chas yelled and Maya opened her eyes in time to see Material Girl flash past the finishing post to win her second Melbourne Cup in succession.
‘Yay! Yay!’ Chas clapped his hands excitedly, Riley enveloped them in a group hug and Maya battled tears as sheer unadulterated joy swept through her.
‘She won,’ Maya murmured, her tear-filled gaze locking on Riley’s tender one.
‘We’re all winners, my love,’ he said, slanting a slow burning kiss across her lips, the type of kiss that Maya loved and savoured and treasured every day she was lucky enough to have with this incredible man.
‘We sure are.’
She smiled at her husband, her son and caressed her swollen belly.
Winners were grinners and, with a family like theirs, she would never stop smiling.
