Baby Be Mine

“Master Silverton,” Winton pleaded again when he realized his boss was deviating from their current topic. “The fight?”

“All right.” Clinton grumpily agreed, not at all happy that he wouldn’t get another taste of those cream cupcakes until he sorted out this whole mess. And then with a clap of his hands and a booming shout, everyone froze and the whole commotion came to ceasefire.

Clarice, by that time, managed to wake from her reverie and ran out the door, with Hunter in close proximity behind her. The first thought that hit her once she got outside was, Dear heavens, it’s freezing.

“Clarice, wait,” Hunter shouted from behind.

When she realized she was being chased, Clarice ran even faster, trying to escape Hunter, but he was too quick for her and caught her, dragging her to a halt.

“Let me go, Hunter,” Clarice shouted and struggled to escape Hunter’s grasp.

  “No,” Hunter shouted.

“I said let me go,” Clarice repeated, struggling even harder, but Hunter was adamant and wouldn’t loosen his grip.

“Please, Clarice.” Hunter pulled her face forward and smashed her lips against his, hoping that would make her calm down. When he felt her relax, he pulled away from her and spoke, “When I said I wanted to sleep with you, I didn’t mean it that way.”

“Then what did you mean?” Clarice shouted back, angry with him for making her feel this way, this confusion, this wanting, this desire she didn’t realize she harbored. “All you do is sleep with women. That’s why I wanted Anton’s sperm, not yours. It was my mistake. But now I don’t care. I got my baby. I’ll teach him not to be a Casanova like you. So leave me alone and let me go, you jerk, you idiot, you Casanova!” Clarice yelled in anger and managed to struggle herself free from Hunter’s hold, then made her escape again.

“Wait, Clarice, that’s not what I mean. It just came out that way,” Hunter shouted, running after her again. “Clarice, wait for me. You got it all wrong. I want to explain everything.”

“What is there to explain?” Clarice shouted. “I’ve heard enough. I don’t want to have anything to do with you anymore. Get out of my life.” And then she ran, taking off her high heels and throwing them away so she could hasten her pace.

Hunter sprinted after her again, his fingers almost catching the flap of her scarf, but he somehow managed to stupidly trip on those heels Clarice had thrown away. He came tumbling down on the ground with an oomph sound, hitting his head on the ground, temporarily allowing Clarice to break free from his chase. But Hunter didn’t give up. He just got back up and raced after her again. But Clarice managed to escape his pursuit in the nick of time, as she climbed into the taxi, leaving Hunter in the dust.

  “Hello, my dear, where—”

“GO!” Clarice shouted, interrupting the driver’s greeting, as she saw Hunter approaching faster.

“Okay, my dear. But where to?” the taxi driver asked as if he had all the time in the world.

This wasn’t the time for slow, casual conversation. “Anywhere, just drive NOW.”

“All right, my dear.” The driver put the car into drive and it began to crawl slowly away from the curbside, until she yelled for him to go faster.

God, Hunter was fast approaching now. If the taxi didn’t pick up speed soon, she was sure Hunter would catch up. She could feel her heart pounding out of her chest and about to leap out of her throat too.

“You know, my dear, if you have a fight with your boyfriend, don’t go driving in your own car,” the driver chuckled and smiled a toothy grin at her. “Luckily, you have me. My speed limit is fifty-K so you’ll be safe with me.”

Ugh. Clarice shook and slumped her head in her hands. He’s not my boyfriend, Clarice wanted to say, but she was so tired and too overwhelmed with the whole situation to have the energy to explain to the taxi driver. Her heart was pounding so hard. This must be due to too much adrenaline. Now she felt so lethargic and exhausted.

Clarice turned back to stare out the window, seeing Hunter as he still raced after her, trying to catch up to the speeding taxi whisking her away. Once Hunter was nothing but a dot in the distance, she released a sigh of relief and closed her eyes.

What in heavens just happened there? How did one single sperm lead her to so much trouble?
