Crossroads with Half the Information

Eleni stepped away from the screen. Timotey became visible. Leaning against the wall, holding his head, as if it hurt.
“Timotey. Are you all right?”, asked Lisbeth.
He nodded shortly.
“Captain I am very sorry about me not recognizing you instantly”, said Timotey before Lisbeth could even ask him to do so.
She turned to her sister.
“See? He didn’t want to insult you. Please allow us to connect”, said Lisbeth and stretched out her hands to emphasize her request.
“Yes, please”, Timotey followed suit, supporting her plea.
Eleni looked from one to the other.
“You know, I hate it to lose my little sister, but, well, fine. The contract allows it, there are enough spare boxes available at the moment. Go to Abelit, head of the resources and hand over all your ids Lisbeth. He'll hand you new ones you can use as a customer from now on. I'll the day in ten years to say good-morning to you.”
Eleni bent forward, kissed Lisbeth on her forehead and left without another word.
Did she see a shimmer of a tear in the eyes of her holder sister?
“Thank you”, whispered Lisbeth to the already closed door.
Lisbeth didn’t know what else to say. Maybe she would find the right words in ten years.
Timotey watched and listened to the good-bye of the sisters. He still couldn’t believe the captain allowed their marriage but was very happy she did. But that farewell kiss. It had been so intimate. Maybe his mother was right. Lisbeth would need to say good-bye to her family. Seeing them maybe five or six more times and then loosing them forever.
He gulped.
Could he steal her away from her life and expect her to give everything up for him? Was he worth the trouble?
The door of his narrow room opened. The noise of steps and chatter from the others floated into his silent cell.
“Let’s meet at Abelits office”, said Lisbeth. She smiled at him through the visual connection.
She was so brave. He would make sure, that she never regretted choosing him.
Lisbeth closed the storage room door behind her. For three years that had been the place where she ate lunch and wandered through the rooms back to the front room. Everyone was back to shopping. As if nothing had changed. Afternoon customers stood before the shelves with the wine and beer and other alcohol. The shelves with the books were empty.
Her world had turned upside down.
At the scanner, to check out the customers, stood a young guy, waving at her. He smiled. Eleni had quickly found her a replacement.
Lisbeth waved back and walked to the front door. Outside people walked in both directions. Chatter filled the hallway. In ten years, she would walk among them, but for now, she would walk through the crew aisles for the last time.
She smiled.
Timotey was waiting for her.
Lisbeth left the starship shop and turned towards Abelit’s office to get her new life and marry Timotey. The doors closed behind her.
