The Armored Wolf

Darian took out his phone and was about to dial Diane when he put his phone back away. He had to see Ellie. She was his number one priority. He changed back into an armored wolf and took off running towards the closest hospital where he knew Ellie would be.

At the Mercy Hospital off to the left of highway seventy-seven, there was quite a buzz. There were reporters who had been reporting on the warehouse fire who had heard about the girl who had been in a cage and had followed the ambulance to the hospital in the hopes of getting more of the story. There were police officers and F.B.I. agents by the entrance of the hospital, determined to protect the girl who had been nearly murdered by her stepfather and his associates until she recovered so they could question her. All of these humans though never saw the armored wolf sneak past them quietly before changing into a teenage boy and entering the hospital.

Darian looked around him. No doubt there were rumors and gossip being spread already about Ellie and why she was there. He didn’t really care though for those theories. The fact that he didn’t hear anything about her being dead brought a bit of comfort to him. Darian walked to the counter to the young nurse who was on the phone. Darian’s ears perked up. From what he heard, it sounded like the nurse was talking to her boyfriend about what was happening. Darian shook his head. This nurse wasn’t going to be much help to him.

“Hey kid!” Darian turned to see an F.B.I. agent walking towards him. Darian’s eyes flashed to the badge that the agent had. It read: Agent Simmons.

“Yes?” Darian asked Agent Simmons looked at Darian closely. It felt like minutes were passing by. Darian didn’t have time for this. He wanted to find Ellie. “You look like crap.” Agent Simmons finally said, reaching for his handcuffs. “Were you a part of the group responsible for setting that fire?”

Darian shook his head. He knew how to get suspicion off of him. “My mother is Officer Demeter.” He told Agent Simmons. “She told me that my girlfriend was here and that she had been in an accident.” Darian made sure that his voice sounded panicky. “Her name is Ellie Summers. I need to see her.” He went to push by Agent Simmons and, just as he expected, Agent Simmons held him back gently.

“Listen Son, your mother didn’t tell you the whole truth.” Agent Simmons told Darian. “Ellie Summers was the only victim we found from the warehouses that were set on fire. Her stepfather was found murdered down the road. We figured one of his partners killed him before making a getaway.” He shook his head. “The doctors aren’t sure if Ellie will survive.”

Darian looked past the agent towards the medical hallway. “I need to see Ellie.” He told Agent Simmons. “Please take me to her.” In Ellie’s room, Denthro and Demeter were sitting on both sides of Ellie’s bed. Neither of them could look away from Ellie. She was burned to the point it was impossible to recognize her. Her hair was completely gone. There was a life support machine attached to her. The heart monitor was showing a very slow heartbeat. Almost as if Ellie’s heart was on the verge of stopping.

There was a knock at the door. The two adults turned to see Darian standing there. Darian’s face was pale. He slowly went up to Ellie’s side and gently took Ellie’s hand in his. His ears perked up and he could hear Ellie’s heart beating slowly. He started shaking.

Denthro put a hand on Darian’s shoulder. “I’m sorry Darian.” Denthro said. “Ellie might not survive this.” There was only so much that armored wolf’s blood could do with healing armored wolves. It would be a miracle of Ellie’s armored wolf blood could save her.

Darian looked down at Ellie. He couldn’t lose her.

  Chapter Twenty Four

Weeks later…somewhere in the Black Forest in Germany Darian came out of his family’s large log cabin and went up to Denthro. Denthro was putting luggage in the back of his car. “Are you sure you have to go?” Darian asked. They had just arrived there after all. They should be settling down after leaving their lives behind in Dalton. Demeter and the rest of the family were in the nearby town buying more supplies. There was no telling how long they would be at the log cabin.

Denthro nodded and turned to Darian. “I know it’s not the best time but we don’t exactly have time to waste.” Denthro reminded his son. “The rest of the packs are sending their leaders to meet to talk about what happened in Dalton.” Denthro crossed his arms over his chest. It hadn’t taken much to convince the other packs to send their leaders to the meeting grounds. All of them had to know why Denthro had called for the meeting. “And since you’re busy here with our newest member, I’m the best choice to go to the meeting.” Denthro looked over Darian’s shoulder. “You know it was a miracle that she was able to recover from what happened to her.”

Darian turned to see Ellie sitting there. The girl was in a wheelchair looking out towards the lake that was by their cabin. Her hair was slowly growing back and her skin was still healing. She had dark shades over her eyes. Ellie was still recovering from what had happened to her. Burned skin and sensitive eyes.

It had been Darian’s idea to take Ellie from the hospital as soon as she was able to leave. Jared’s friends except for Cliff had been arrested and Darian didn’t want Ellie anywhere near Cliff. They had left everything behind and had fled that night, using fake names and taking different flights to Germany to avoid detection. Denthro had taken Darian and Ellie with him, using fake medical papers stating that Ellie was going to get surgery done in Europe.

“Who do you think the armored wolf was in her family?” Darian asked Denthro. They hadn’t talked about it but Darian needed to know who it was.

Denthro sighed. He had gone back through Ellie's blood work but this time, he looked for older possible dormant armored wolf blood cells. He had found them and they had been active since she had nearly died the first time Jared had harmed her. “That’s what I’m hoping to find out at this meeting as well.” He told Darian. “You know there aren’t that many packs left out there. There has to be another armored wolf pack that can answer that question.” Denthro hugged Darian. “When I come back, I’ll have more answers for you and Ellie.” He told Darian.

What neither of them said was that it was just a matter of time before whoever gave Jared and his friends the power to hurt armored wolves showed their faces. That was the other part that would be talked about at the meeting. None of the armored wolves who would be at the meeting would be happy that there was a force still trying to wipe them out.

Darian watched Denthro get into the car before driving away. Darian then turned around and went to Ellie. He took her hand and looked at Ellie. “I’m here for you Ellie.” He told her. Ellie didn’t turn to him. From what the doctors had told them, it sounded like it would be a while before Ellie could hear or see anything again. Darian gently squeezed Ellie’s hand. After a few seconds, Ellie squeezed Darian’s hand.
