  I took it while eyeing the goofy look on his face, then opened it with care and pulled a rectangular paper free. My heart dropped into my stomach and I had to do a double, triple, and quadruple take to make sure I’d counted the digits right on the check made out to me. “Is this real? Are you playing a joke on me or something?”

  His grin was wider than humanly possible. “Nope. Trust me, it’s very real. The investment my aunt made returned over one million dollars. So as of today, you are two hundred and fifty thousand dollars richer.”

  I couldn’t move. My body was frozen in place with my mouth hanging open and my eyes undoubtedly as big as planets. “And Mr. Adams gave me this?”

  “Yeah. Because you’re one of us and you always will be.”

  Tears spilled from my eyes, one dropping onto the corner of the check.

  Benji took it and placed it back in the envelope then pulled me into his lap. “Happy tears again?”

  I nodded, resting my head on his chest. “This past year has been so surreal.”

  “Yeah, I know what you mean. It’s been rough, but we made it. Because of each other, we made it.”

  He tilted my chin and took my lips in a slow kiss, easing me down beside him. “So what do you say? Me, you, the world?”

  I tackled him with a hug and pecked his lips several times. “Yes, yes, yes. Hell yes.”

  Love. A crazy concept, or so I’d thought. That was until two lost souls had adhered, becoming one. A friendship so unlikely had developed into connection so deep it defied the laws of the universe. The man beside me could only ever be described as one thing. My soul mate.
