Ghost Stories (Witch Woods Funeral Home Book 4): (Ghost Cozy Mystery series)
Page 12
My phone rang. It was still diverted. “Good morning, sorry, afternoon, Witch Woods Funeral Home. How may I help you?”
Basil and Ian were both looking at me expectantly after I hung up. “As you probably guessed from hearing one side of the conversation, that was the escort agency,” I told them. “Now that Mom’s been cleared of Frank’s murder, they want me to conduct a themed funeral for him.”
“And the theme is?” Basil asked.
“Casanova.” Ian looked puzzled, so I added, “The famous Casanova, you know, from Venice.”
“I’ll go as a gondola,” Ian said happily.
Mom emerged from a door, followed by Detectives Prescott and Wilkinson. Their faces were pale and slightly green. Both were clutching their heads.
“A funeral for Tom?” Mom clapped her hands with delight. “And you said a Casanova theme? Was Casanova a famous escort?”
I was at a loss how to explain it. “Not exactly, but sort of. Haven’t you heard of him? He lived in the eighteenth century.”
“I didn’t know they had escorts back in those times.” Mom shrugged and tapped her chin thoughtfully. “Yes, there were no electronic devices in the eighteenth century, so there must have been a need for escorts. I’ll help you with his funeral, Laurel.”
I scratched my forehead. “Thanks, Mom, but I didn’t think you’d want to go to a Casanova themed funeral. I think he was a polygamist.”
Mom pursed her lips in a gesture of disapproval. “We don’t get many of that denomination around here, but we all can’t be Pentecostal. I don’t condemn other denominations, even though they’re all going to hell. It’s not my place to condemn those heathens. You know I don’t judge, Laurel.”
Basil snatched my hand. “Let’s get out of here!”
I didn’t need telling twice. “Where are we going?”
“Does it matter?”
“No!”
We hurried from the police station and drove away from Mom as fast as we could, heading for sanity. “I’m trying to push the visions of Ian dressed as a gondola from my mind,” I said. “I don’t even want to think what Mom will wear.” I shuddered.
Basil rested his hand on my knee, causing my body to tremble. “Think about wine, chocolate, and ice cream instead. I know a great place, and it’s not far from here. And then we’ll go back to my home. I’ll cook you dinner, and…” His words hung on the air.
I smiled with delight and relief, and leaned back in my seat. This was a happy ending, after all. This whole adventure had started badly, but it was ending with wine, ice cream, chocolate—and Basil.
