Dark Deceit

Sweat had beaded on Bryn’s face, her eyes squeezed shut. Korvain could taste her pain, but Bryn wouldn’t stop. Her mouth parted a little, her tongue darting out to sweep along her bottom lip. She was rocking and grinding against him. He could feel her inner walls clenching around his cock, squeezing. He clutched the top of her thighs suddenly, his knuckles turning white.
‘I’m coming, Sh’mai. I’m coming.’
Bryn threw her head back and rode him harder. He came within the well of her body, jetting his seed deep inside her. There wasn’t a better feeling for a man than that, knowing that he had marked his woman inside and out. Bryn cried out his name as she, too, came again.
He felt her inner muscles clenching down onto his cock, drawing yet another orgasm out of him. His hands went to her hips, fingers digging in. He threw his head back into the pillow, his back arching while Bryn held on.
His breath was beating out of him. Bryn’s was matching his. He looked up at her and Bryn’s dual-ringed eyes looked back into his. Leaning forward, with their bodies still connected so intimately, she placed a gentle kiss on his lips.
Chapter Thirty-seven
Taer stared at Korvain sitting in front of her and tried to make sense of the words he was saying.
‘Tay? Adrian’s de—’
‘Yeah,’ she interrupted. ‘I heard you the first time.’
Adrian’s dead. Adrian’s dead. Adrian’s dead.
Yep, she got that message loud and clear. But why was she still here? She must have asked the question out loud because Korvain began speaking again.
‘When I went home, I found you both in the garage. Adrian...’
She winced over his name.
Korvain sighed. ‘Your brother was dead. You had had your throat slashed, but you still had a weak pulse. I brought you here to be healed.’
She eyed the room she’d woken up in again. It was plain, eggshell-white with more plain and functional furniture. She was lying in one single bed while another identical bed was set on the opposite wall. The sheets were still rumpled as if it had not long ago been slept in.
‘Who healed me?’
‘A Valkyrie named Eir mainly, but another called Kara helped to stabilise you first.’
‘Where’s Darrion?’
Korvain shook his head. ‘I don’t know. I’ve searched his safe houses, even the ones he doesn’t think I know about. He’s nowhere to be found.’
‘Yeah? Well, I’m going to find him,’ she snapped, her anger started to cloud her mind. She was going to find him and return the fucking favor he’d bestowed upon her and...her brother.
Taer felt the first tear begin to swell, but she blinked it away. She would not cry—not in front of Korvain or anyone. She had to be stronger than that. Ad...her brother had told her life was tough, and she had to be tougher. Well, guess what? She was going to be tougher. She would avenge her brother and she would make sure Darrion’s death was a long and slow process. That bastard had just hurt the wrong Mare.
Revenge was coming.
Retribution was near.

Darrion watched the house burn, watched the humans swarm like flies to cow shit. He waited until the very end, until Korvain emerged. He watched as the Mare shrugged the shadows from his shoulders.
‘Well, fuck me.’ He had no idea the bastard was capable of that. He knew he was powerful, but to be able to manipulate the shadows like that...well he hadn’t seen that happen since before he was an apprentice. The Mare moved silently though the burned remains of his house.
Adrian’s body had been taken away in an ambulance, but there was no way they’d be able to ID the body without dentals, and Adrian didn’t have any. Darrion shoved his hand into the front pocket of his cargoes and ran his fingers through the collection of teeth that were so fresh the blood was still drying on them.
He should have had double the number, but he had discovered Taer’s body was gone, which could have meant one of two things. Either she was still alive, or Korvain had taken her body away first before coming back for Adrian.
Yeah, Korvain was just that chivalrous.
Bastard.
He faded back to his safe house in South Boston. He knew he had to get out of there. Korvain would be coming for him. Besides, what more could Darrion do? Bryn was still breathing, which meant Odin was still breathing. He could try to strike again, but he needed time to rally himself, to arm himself. This particular mission had failed, but the next one wouldn’t.
Opening up his safe, he took out his collection of weapons and enough cash to see him through to the next move. He had to get out of the city. Darrion threw a bag of clothes together, hastily shoving them in along with the cash.
He didn’t know where he would go. All he knew was who he had to go to. Closing his eyes, he felt the vibration of his old master. At long last, his deceit had paid off. He faded away from Boston on his way to plot his revenge.

Prologue
Loki watched from his dark, dank corner of the room. Whiskers twitching, his beady eyes followed the demi-god as he fell to the ground. The Mare spun around, staring down at Bryn who was clutching her golden blade in her fingers.
Loki didn’t know the true power of her blade until that very moment. One little cut was all it took to cut the strings of his puppet, to cut his strings and send him spilling out onto the floor—his last breath puffing out in front of his mouth.
After freeing the Valkyrie, Korvain scooped Bryn into his arms and led the only other living thing in the subterranean room out through the metal door. In this form, Loki’s sensitive nose drew in the scent of the decaying bodies of the Valkyries who had perished at his hand. They lay in a pile in one corner, the ground littered with their bloodied feathers.
No doubt Bryn would come back for them as soon as she was able which meant he had to get out of there. With a single thought, he reformed into his true form, running a hand through his pale hair and stretching out his neck.
With one final look at the first battle in his war against Odin, Loki faded from the tunnel...
