The Demon Beside Me

“Got it,” he said. They separated and he looked over to me. I returned the gaze and we both nodded to each other. At one time, we would have shaken hands. Now there was an invisible wall between us. Time would take it down. “Take care, Isaiah.”
“Good luck, Caleb,” I said.
His wings spread again, then beat the air as he lifted from the ground. He spiraled up into the air, then headed off in the direction that he had pointed out earlier. I suspected that he’d be flying in that direction for roughly six hours, give or take a few minutes.
Tink sighed. “Now we’re stuck.”
“What do you mean?”
“How are we supposed to get home?”
I jerked a thumb over my shoulder. The portal back to Purgatory still stood open. “We go there and flag down an imp. Unless you want to visit Hell first.”
“I’m curious about it,” she admitted. “But I’m more interested in getting home right now. I’m starving.”
“We’re standing here in a place that’s basically a legend to your entire race, and you’re moaning about being hungry?”
“I can’t help it!” she snapped. “A girl’s got to eat.”
“So do you do the cooking?” I asked. “Or does your sister?”
“Neither of us. We have a maid.”
“Seriously?”
“No. Fucking pervert. You were just imagining me dressed up like a maid, weren’t you?”
“I wasn’t until you mentioned it.”
She punched me in the shoulder. “We take turns cooking. Maybe I’ll have you do all the cooking since you’ll be freeloading for a while.”
“Now you’re imagining me in a maid outfit.”
“Shit! Now I can’t get it out of my mind!”
I grinned and offered her my hand. “How about it, partner? Let’s go home.”
“Home it is.” She put her hand in mine.
