Jessie's Promise

Page 28

by Rosie Clarke

‘Well, perhaps,’ Jessie said and laughed. She knew that she might not have been accepted so easily if the family hadn’t needed her, but she was too happy to question, knowing that however it had begun she was a much loved part of the family now. ‘But we have to get these off the ground first.’

‘First of all, we have to see you safely delivered of our son,’ Harry said, because Jessie’s surety had grown in his heart and like her he believed the child was a boy, and looked at her lovingly. ‘Though I dare say you’ll manage that as easily as you do all the rest.’

‘I can’t guarantee that,’ she said giving him a look full of love. ‘But I’ll do my best.’

Jessie smiled as she looked at the faces of the people grouped around the room. Aunt Elizabeth who had been so good to her, doing well with her teashop in London; it was her success that had given Jessie the idea she had cherished since her return to Kendlebury. Then Priscilla, her children and husband, looking relieved that things had apparently settled down after all the traumas. Anne Kendle, surprised but pleased, and Sir Joshua clearly relishing the idea of being closely involved in the new ventures – and Harry, her darling Harry, Catherine sitting happily on his knee, almost asleep after her busy day being petted by all the guests at the wedding.

It was a comfortable scene of family life, a good place to be – and there was always tomorrow.
