“Iris died during the night. Overdose of curare,” Quintilius answered.

“She killed herself?” Lupo thought that the woman hadn’t looked like one who would take the easy way out. She was too mean.

“Her death is on Claudius, but with her out of the picture, it will be difficult to prove he was behind the assassination plot against his own nest. But, in any case, per vampire law, he had the right to kill the vampire, so who knows what it is all about.”

Lupo scratched his head. “Something else?”

“I demoted the angel who was after me, and since she is a fallen now, she decided to have her memories removed. The sentence was carried out early this morning. A full confession was recorded before she became a demon, but the Holy Nation will push to have the recording sealed. I’m afraid the Immortal Council will grant their wish. Politics.”

“You had a busy twenty-four hours,” Lupo said, trying to wrap his head around everything he had just heard.

“You have no idea.” Quintilius laughed.

They spent the rest of the time chatting about his father’s wedding plans.

When he went back to his cell, sadness filled his heart, because the hour had passed too soon, but he was also looking forward to Quintilius’s next visit, and that filled him with a happiness he hadn’t thought he would ever experience again.

Later, lying on the narrow cot, he thought of Jasmine, and instead of letting her memories overrun his mind in a destructive loop, he started talking to her and told her what had happened to him in the last few days.

“And next year, we’ll all travel to Seattle, where they will marry,” he finished his tale much later. Then, before closing his tired eyes, he said, “I love you, Jasmine.”

“I love you, my wolf,” she answered…

  Bio

Monica La Porta is an Italian who landed in Seattle several years ago. Despite popular feelings about the Northwest weather, she finds the mist and the rain the perfect conditions to write. Being a strong advocate of universal acceptance and against violence in any form and shape, she is also glad to have landed precisely in Washington State. She is the author of The Ginecean Chronicles, a dystopian/science fiction series set on the planet Ginecea where women rule over a race of enslaved men and heterosexual love is considered a sin. She also published two other series: the futuristic love story across the universe, Elios & Gaia, narrated in two books; and the paranormal romance/urban fantasy series The Immortals set in Rome. Stop by her blog to read about her miniatures, sculptures, paintings, and her beloved beagle, Nero. Sometimes, she also posts about her writing.
