He gave this long consideration. Then he shook his head. “He is too valuable on many fronts to harm. Not on account of his involvement with you. As long as they don’t know his role in all this, I think he’s safe.”

“But it will all come out, and it will be all-out war.”

He raised one arrogant eyebrow. “Yes. I’ll be ready for it.”

“You will?” I turned my face to him. “What? I look like the running-and-hiding type to you?”

His gaze was heavy with so much as he caressed my cheek. “The running-into-a-minefield type. That’s what worries me. There’ll be no room for confrontations here. This is stealth and preemptive strikes territory. We must go deep undercover.” His eyes added, in every sense.

Seemed hormones really made the world go round. Battered and broken, my body still wagged its every cell in agreement.

“We must regroup,” he added. “Reassess, gather intel, plan counterstrikes, cleanups—”

“Hey, hey, wait a minute. Who’s ‘we’?”

  “Me and you. Our teams.”

“I have a team, buddy. On the last count, you don’t.”

“I bet I salvage one yet. But you’re right, until I reroute my career, I’m out of a job.”

His mock-mournful expression tickled me. I found myself smiling full at him. Bliss, to just have him to smile at.

“Maybe I can offer you a job. I can use someone with your—skills. If it’s okay with you to have me as absolute boss that is…”

You’d never think anything was wrong with him from the way he pounced. “Where do I sign for my first submission course?”

Ha. And I was born an hour and ten minutes ago. “On the dotted lie, where else?”

His eyes went dead. “You’ll never forgive me.” Statement.

“I’ll never forget. Your actions cost me a lot, Damian. No idea how much they’ll still cost my closest people.”

His voice when he recovered enough to talk was monotone, tight. Determined. “I—understand. But let me make amends, offer all I have dealing with the fallout, and as we start over.”

  “You mean work-wise, or you-and-me-wise?”

  “Every way. Whatever it takes.”

Start over. Seemed like a good idea.

And whom was I kidding? It was the only idea.

What else was there with my operation’s cover most probably blown, and my friends’ futures, on every count, uncertain? With the world getting darker, crazier by the hour and trust becoming one of the dirtiest words around?

Add a global-scale intrigue, and a man I loved, had faith in, but would never fully trust or fathom, and you had your basic highest-stakes mess.

This called for a clean slate, no tracks, new rules, extreme measures.

I turned to him. “Let’s wipe everything out then, and start from scratch. Whatever it takes.”

He laced his fingers with mine, met my pledge with his. “Whatever it takes.”

As I finally nestled my head over his steadily beating heart, I wondered if we would succeed, or even survive.

One thing I knew. Whatever happened, it would be a rollercoaster. Probably one gone off the trails.

Oh, well. At least it would be just what I needed. To renew my resolve. To conquer all I . To survive. To win.

And with Damian by my side, always at my back, I would.

  We would.

If you enjoyed the books, I’d truly appreciate it if you spread the word!

As an indie author, reviews mean everything to my success, as they’re how other readers consider giving my books a try. Even a one-line review on the book’s page on Amazon especially, and also Goodreads and Bookbub would be amazing.

Although the books can be read as standalone, I’m sure your enjoyment will be maximized if you read the series in order. If you haven’t yet, please read LETHAL TREATMENT, the first book in the series, and LETHAL REACTION, the third book.
