by Black, Joslyn

His mind was full of thoughts of Sara, what she must have seen, how badly she must have hurt and how now she probably doesn’t trust him; she probably put him in the same classification of her dick husband, cheaters. He tried her phone once again and got no answer. He decided to just rinse off get into bed and go to sleep; he would straighten this out tomorrow.

  Chapter 33

“Jo Ann, do you mind if we stop at my place so I can get a change of clothes?” Sara’s face was blank her voice void of any feeling.

“Yeah that’s no problem at all.” Jo Ann felt so bad for Sara and she was pissed at Gio for lying to her. “What a prick, so much for I would even break the bro code because Sara’s so nice blah blah blah next time I see him he’s getting a kick to the balls.”

Jo Anna pulled into Sara’s parking lot and parking in the visitors spot; placing the car in park she turned to Sara. “Do you want me to walk in with you?”

“No I’ll be right back five minutes.” With that she opened the car door and got out. Jo Ann watched Sara walk to her apartment through her rear view mirror. Ten minutes later Sara came back to the car wearing black yoga pants and a plain black t-shirt; she was carrying a black and white checkered tote. She opened the back door threw in her tote, shut the door then got in the passenger side.

  “Ready?”

“Yeah, I know I said just tonight but would you mind if I stayed the weekend?”

  “Of course not.”

  “Thanks.”

“Do you want to hit up a 7/11 and get some ice cream and comfort food or just head in?”

“Just head in tonight, but I will want warm donuts in the morning.”

  “Deal.”

Pulling into her driveway Jo Ann hit her clicker for her garage door to open. Pulling inside she shut the door behind them and then turned the car engine off. She turned to Sara and let out a big sigh.

“I’m sorry this was such a shitty night for you.”

Sara let out a sarcastic chuckle. “Yeah here I was wearing a skirt expecting to get taking up against the wall again; not walking to the bathroom and watching my boyfriend make-out with his so called ex-hook up.”

“Yeah I know let's get upstairs. Do you know I even told Gio what that bitch was saying in the car on the ride down and he assured me that there was nothing going on between them; he even said if there was he'd brake the bro code because you're too nice to be messed with. What a fucking liar.”

As they reached the top of the stairs Jo Ann fished her keys back out to unlock her door. As they entered Sara looked around the garage door came through the kitchen her first floor was basically an open floor plan it made it look bigger than what it was. And she didn't have carpet she had hard wood throughout. Jo Ann's decorating was very eclectic lots of bold colors. Sara expected nothing less with Jo Ann's personality.

“Your condo is beautiful Jo Ann.”

“Thanks there's a half bath there under the stairs the bedrooms are up stairs. You want something to snack on or drink?”

“No I'd just like to lay down.”

“Ok I'll show you to my guest room slash office.”

Up the stairs they went Jo Ann stopped at the first door.

“Ok so this is your room there is a connecting door to the bathroom which also has a connecting door to my bedroom so when you're using the bathroom just lock my door and unlock when you're done. Easy peasy since I use this as my office as you can see I don't have a bed but that is a futon, I know doesn't look like a regular futon that's why I liked it so much it really looks like a blocked couch. Anyway it is very comfortable to sleep on. In that closet you’ll find sheets and pillows.” Jo Ann pulled Sara in for a hug. “I'm really sorry honey.”

“Do all men cheat or is it just my luck?”

“Not all men cheat but I'm not gonna lie dating is hard; for every five bad fish you catch and throw back you fish out one good one. And even then it might not last. Ok I'm going to rinse off and go to bed night sweetie.”

  “Night Jo and thank you.”

“There's nothing to thank me for I'm a friend I'm here for you.”

When Jo Ann left the room Sara just stood there for a moment processing everything that had happened, her mind churning out random thoughts as she started to make her bed.

“I got over Michael and I was with him ten years.”

“I'll get over Eric it's been two weeks with him.”

“But in those two weeks I experienced more passion and love than I did in ten years with Michael.”

“I didn't know I was such a sensual person or that I would actually enjoy being a little dominated. Eric brought that out showed me that.”

“And he's probably shown plenty of other women too. He lied to me even knowing why I was divorced.”

“He used me because I was venerable weak. I said I wasn't gonna be a door mat any more yet I just let him plow right over me.”

As her thoughts got more toxic she shook her head to clear it. She wasn't going to think about it she was going to lock it away and move on. Finished with making the bed Sara turned out the lights and went to sleep. She tossed and turned most of the night but around 4 am she fell into a fitful sleep.

Eric woke early considering how late he went to bed. But he wasn't really able to sleep so he got out of bed showered and dressed ready to go to Sara's to fix this mess. Walking into his living room he saw his two cousins were still sleeping, they hadn't even used the blankets and pillows he'd taken out for them. He went to his kitchen to make some coffee before he left he needed some very strong coffee to keep him up and alert. The aroma of his dark roast coffee wafted into the living room. Matt slowly began to wake. He stretched out his arms and legs twisting his back. In a gruff voice still full of sleep he called to Eric in the kitchen.

“Hey man pour me a cup.”

He got up and shuffled his way to the kitchen where Eric was pouring them both a cup. Taking a tentative sip Matt saw the clock in the microwave behind Eric.

“Seriously man it's. 6 am. Why are you up so early and why'd you wake me up so early we just went to sleep a few hours ago.”

“1st I did not wake you , you woke to the smell of the coffee. 2nd. I couldn't sleep so I'm going over to Sara's.”

Matt set his cup done and looked Eric straight in the eye “You're joking right”

  “No”

Matt shook his head “Why is it a man such as yourself who is so accomplished with women can't think straight with this one?”

Eric looked at Matt confused not understanding his meaning. “What are you talking about?”

Matt pointing to his head and started to reason with Eric “Ok let's think for a moment. She had a long emotional night, she most likely cried herself to sleep like most women do. So she's tired and upset. And you're gonna go knocking at her door at six in the morning. Most likely waking her up from what little sleep she's gotten. You think she's going to be receptive to hearing you. Or do you think she'll be even more cranky and pissed?”

Eric thought on that for a moment. “Alright fine I won't go now.”

“If it were me, I wouldn't go over till she responded to at least one of my texts. ‘Cause that tells me she's ready to talk. If she's ignoring them then she's still either too pissed or too hurt to talk.”

“I can't just wait for that. I'll go over at lunch. And since I'm up and don't think I can relax and wait patiently I'm going over to the store I'll get some paperwork done.”

  Chapter 34

Sara was awakened by the sound of a blender. Her mind hazy from a fitful sleep, it took her a minute to remember where she was and why she was there. She sat up and went for her phone to see what time it was. When she picked up her phone it was off so she hit the top button to turn it on. Her screen display showed that she had 10 missed calls from Eric 10 new voice messages and 15 text messages all from Eric. Without even looking at them she deleted them all and she deleted the voice messages without listening to a single o
ne. There is no excuse that he could give her that she hadn't heard in her 10 years of marriage with Michael. After she cleared the messages and texts her screen showed that I was 10:48. Still tired she wished she could lie back down and sleep for another 10 hours.

But she was going to be a grown-up and not wallow in self-pity so she got up and grabbed her tote and headed for the bathroom to shower and dress. There's something about a long hot shower that just helps relax and ease the stress in your body as she got out she felt a lot better, dressing in her jeans and a tank top she walked downstairs to find Jo Ann. Jo Ann was in the kitchen drinking a smoothie, she must have used the blender to make it because that was the sound that woke Sara up. Lifting her glass toward Sara Jo Ann greeted her.

“Good morning sleepyhead would you like a banana strawberry protein shake to start the day?”

  “No I want hot donuts”

“I know you said that last night but having a protein shake will make up for the empty calories you're gonna eat when you have your donuts.”

JoAnn didn't wanna bring up the sore subject but she was curious and she wanted to know what Sara’s next move was so she asked.

  “Have you heard from him?”

Sara took in a deep breath and let it out with a huff. “I had 15 texts 10 miss calls and 10 messages from him on my phone I deleted them all without looking at them.”

“I know what he did and I know you can't forgive him but do you think you might need to talk to him one more time to get closure to move on?”

“No I'm gonna do everything to erase the last two weeks and just forget that it ever happened.”

“Do you think that's possible Sara I mean you fell in love with him?”

“I was in love with Michael too, look where that got me; no I think I'm just going to erase it all. In fact I wanna go to the AT&T store and change my number I need a local number anyway.”

“Alright I am your friend and I am going to support you and any decision you make. Let me finish up my shake and we could go get our donuts and then head to the AT&T store.”

Eric got into the shop early and he buried himself in paperwork, back work, paperwork that needed to be filed just anything and everything to keep his mind busy and off of Sara. When he finally stopped he looked at the time and saw that is just after 1p.m. He thought that she should defiantly be awake by now so he pulled out his cellphone to call her. Eric was completely shocked and dumbfounded when the number he dialed came up as being disconnected. There must be some mistake he must have dialed the wrong number, he redialed again. But again the automated voice told him that the number he is calling was no longer in service. Eric threw this phone down onto the table. “What the fuck?!”

He couldn't believe it, she must've change her number, she must've changed her number this morning. He knew he shouldn't have listened to Matt; he should've gone over there first thing and straightened all this out.

Eric kept running his hands through his hair frustrated.

  “What should I do now?”

Well there is only one thing he could do, go to her apartment he wasn't gonna let her get away he wasn't gonna let this misunderstanding ruin the best thing that ever had happened to him. She was his dammit she belong to him. With a scowl so big and so mean on his face that not anyone in the shop dare approach or even greet him; he left the store in a storm jumping into his truck one destination in mind Sara's apartment. Upon arrival at her apartment he saw her car was still parked in her spot.

  “Good she’s home.”

He jumped out of his truck and stomped his way to her apartment. The first couple knocks were normal but when she didn't come to the door he began to pound on it calling out her name. Thump thump thump thump “Sara I know you're in there.” Thump thump thump “Open this damn door now.” He carried on like this for a few minutes. But stopped when a man got his attention.

  “Excuse me sir”

Eric turned around to see a nice older gentleman with silvery hair and a weathered face wearing khaki shorts and a polo top holding a ring of keys.

“Yes” Eric said in a very harsh tone.

“My name is Mark Brown I’m the apartment manager here; I've received some complaints from the other residents.

  “Complaints?”

“Yes they're complaining about your pounding on Miss Stevens door.”

“Well if she opened the door I wouldn't be pounding on it.” His voice was in a very sarcastic tone.

“Sir if she hasn’t opened the door and if she's in there she can hear you because the rest of the apartment complex does; so then it stands to reason that she does not want to talk to you.”

“Well she's going to talk to me.” Turning his back to Mr. Brown he once again began to thump on Sara's door.

  “Sir, sir excuse me sir.”

Eric stopped to face the old man again.

“I'm afraid you're causing too much of a disturbance and I'm going to have to ask you to leave the premises. And I suggest that you don't come back until you are invited. Now you can leave quietly or I can call security.”

Eric's top was about to blow, he was already upset, pissed off and just a hairs breath away from exploding and here was this old man kicking him off the property the only way he could get to Sara. With a look that would kill any man standing, he answered.

“Fine.” His voice was clipped and sharp.

He looked to Sara's door one more time before he looked to the old man and left. Full of rage almost to the point of feeling violent, he knew he should not be around anybody so he drove home to calm down relax and rethink of a way to get touch with Sara.

Walking out of the AT&T store Jo Ann was surprise at how little of a wait there was.

“Ok mission one accomplished where to next?”

Sara thought about it for a moment she was craving sweets, comfort food. “I know let’s go the Cheesecake factory.”

Jo Ann’s eyes widened and she smiled and clapped her hands in excitement. “I love The Cheesecake Factory!”

They climbed into Jo Ann’s Kia and took off; talking about all the different flavors to choose from which ones were their favorites and how many pieces they should take home to freeze to eat at a later date.

  Chapter 35

Driving up his driveway he sees that his two cousins are still there; he quickly debates whether he should go in or just drive around till he cooled off because no doubt his cousins were going to rattle his cage. But then he thought of how much traffic he may run into around town and the fact that he might get road rage which would just tip him over the edge. He was already balancing on. Decision made he got out of his truck and went inside his house. When he walked in both his cousins were kicking back on his couch with a beer in hand watching TV.

“What are you two still doing here?” Eric asked and not very politely.

Gio answered him “We wanted to see how things turned out.”

“Well because I listen to shithead (he pointed to Matt) everything is fucked up. I wanted to go this morning but no Matt said give her time. So I waited to after 1pm to call her.”

Gesturing with his hands in a come on fashion Gio was asking him to continue. “And?”

“And (he spit the word at them with venom in his tone ) She changed her damn cell number.”

Matt and Gio both spoke at once. “What?”

“Yeah so I went to her apartment and she won’t open the door. Then the manager came and kicked me off the property for causing a disturbance. Now what the hell I am supposed to do?”

“Question (Gio raised his hand as if he were in school) how do you know she was ignoring you at her apartment?”

“Because her car was in her parking spot and I all but kicked that door down an she never answered” Eric’s voice became increasingly loud as he spoke.

Gio was trying to hold back the sarcasm because he knew Eric was on edge. “Ok let’s think about this, she left last night with Jo Ann in her ca
r, she was upset and crying. Do you really think Jo Ann is just going to drop her off at her apartment at 2am when she was a wreck? No she would have either stayed with her or taken her to her house to try and comfort her.”

Matt was nodding his head in agreement thumbing at Gio. “True women do that kind of stuff, men just want to be alone but women want someone to cry to or cry with.”

Eric threw himself in his recliner, covering his face with his hands. “Shit I got myself banned from her apartments and she wasn’t even there.”

“It’s like I told you this morning for some reason your brain just doesn’t work with this girl.”

Eric shot Matt a scathing look for that comment. Gio just leaned back and put his feet up on the recliner. “If this is what love does to you than you can keep it I don’t want it mama will just have to be happy with Matt and Bri getting married and giving her grandkids.”

Sitting forward resting his elbows on his knees he looked to both of his cousins. “What do I do now.”

Matt just shrugged with an “I don’t know.”

Gio just sat there staring, not at him but through him; he was in deep thought. Then he began nodding his head as if he was talking to himself in his head and agreeing. He then gave Eric his options. “Well, the way I see it you can wait for her at work or call her at work. You can try to get in touch through Jo Ann or you can go old school sending flowers and letters.”

Matt chimed in with his two cents. “I wouldn’t wait for her at her work to stalker like and if you call her at work when she’s busy you’ll just piss her off more.”

“I don’t even know Jo Ann’s last name so I can’t go through her and she probably hates me same as Sara.”

Gio cut in. “No Sara doesn’t hate you she’s just hurt, so she’s cut you out trying to protect herself women do it all the time. And I doubt Jo Ann hates you she probably hates me more.”
