  “I’m getting a promotion?”

I ignored him and turned to the grumpy eavesdropper at the next table. “Sir, would you please tell me your rank?”

Anger warred with pride, then he answered, “I hold the rank of major in Her Majesty’s Royal Marines.”

“Thank you,” I said warmly, then turned back to Mike and Manny.

“What’s two ranks higher than major?”

Mike leaned back with an amused smile. “Colonel is two ranks above the rank of major.”

“Well, it’s settled then,” I said brightly. “I’ll ask them to bump you up to colonel.”

The grumpy, newly-outranked major seemed to be having trouble breathing. “Preposterous, impossible,” he gasped.

“You can do that?” asked Derrick.

Mike answered for me. “We were given wide latitude in what inducements we could offer to get you back, once Luna insisted you were the man for the job.”

“It’s not like we give a crap about rank,” said Manny. “Like Special Forces, everyone works, and everyone fights. We got no use for REMFs.”

  “REMFs?” I asked.

  “Rear echelon mother—”

“Manny!” said Mike. “I think Luna gets it.”

I turned back to Derrick. “You know the risks, and you’ve seen the rewards.” I nodded at the BITCHCoin on the table. “Are you interested?”

“I would be subject to your orders?” asked Derrick.

“Well, yes,” I said. “Everyone has to obey—”

Derrick shook his head, but before I could ruin the deal, Mike interrupted, looking at me in disapproval. “Only on field missions. You’d still report to your chain of command, would still be a subject of your government. We won’t demand your loyalty, just your assistance in matters where our interests overlap.”

“Frankly, it sounds too good to be true,” said Derrick.

“Well, we could sweeten the deal,” I said, and turned to Mike. “What was that bit about garters and the queen having a birthday coming up?”

Derrick froze, then said stiffly, “You shouldn’t joke about knighthood. You don’t realize how seriously we take that honor.”

The grumbles from the next table turned to angry words, which I ignored.

“Well, Her Majesty seemed insistent, and I wouldn’t want to disappoint her.”

Derrick suppressed a grin, “Well, if Her Majesty insists, what can I do but accept?”

I stroked his hand, “Also, I would be honored if you would accept an equal commission in my fiefdom’s government.”

“A knighthood in the Dark Fae military?”

“Purely ceremonial,” I said. “We know your allegiance is to your country.”

Derrick took a sip of his drink as he thought, and finally said, “In that case, I would be honored to accept your offer.” He shook his head in disbelief and laughed. “Imagine—me, a knight for the Dark Fae!”

“There’s one tiny detail,” I said. “We don’t use the term ‘knight’ in our language.”

“So what is the correct term?”

“It doesn’t translate well,” I said, “and most humans can’t pronounce it. In fact, I couldn’t think of the perfect word in English for that title until just recently.”

“And what is the perfect word?”

  “Paladin.”

  Dear Reader,

Thank you for reading. There are a lot more adventures in store for everyone’s favorite werewolf.

In our next adventure, Luna’s first mission is to capture a bear with a taste for human flesh. No problem for a highly trained werewolf with a smidgen of magic skills, right?

But this bear is special. He’s smarter than your average bear, faster than your average bear, and much, much more deadly than your average bear.

But that’s only the beginning of Luna’s adventures. In an attempt to procure the services of the one magical healer who can repair the damage to Alisha’s face, body, and soul, Luna has to beat the alpha that this healer works for.

Luna is tough, but is she tougher than the world’s champion alpha?

See how Luna fares in this contest when she has to fight the toughest werewolf in the world under a total eclipse, with no magic to help her.

The title for the next book is Lycan Legacy - Penumbra and is scheduled for publication in June, 2021.
