The journey back to the house took no time at all, at least to little Beth. She was utterly exhausted after her ordeal, drifting in and out of consciousness, though never losing grip of Sir Doyle, her arms wrapped around him as he urged Brutus along.
When they made it home, she was carried gently into the house, set down on the chaise longue in the drawing room. The morning passed her by in a daze. She was bathed, dressed in a night shirt and then laid down in the cot, the blankets tucked around her, a dummy in her mouth. She was asleep within moments, not awakening until the sun had set. She sat bolt upright when she awoke, afraid for a second that she was back with Glossop.
But then she saw her dollhouse in the corner of the room and her fears fell away from her. She was safe at last. She got to her feet, reaching up to take the scripture quotation from the wall. As she did so, it slipped from her fingers, falling to the floor next to the cot with a cracking sound coming from it that made her heart sink. She climbed out of the cot, kneeling down to pick up the frame, frowning as she saw something sticking out behind the fabric.
It was a folded piece of paper and as she pulled it free, she saw another slip of paper and then another. Looking at each in turn, her eyes widened as she realised what was contained within them.
She ran downstairs, finding Sir Doyle in his bedroom, laid on his bed fully clothed, staring into the distance. “You are awake,” he said as she ran in. “What’s the matter? Are you all right?”
“Do you remember how we could not be together because I was a pauper?”
“Oh, that does not matter now. That is an issue to discuss another time. For now, we must make sure you are quite recovered from your ordeal.”
“We must discuss it now. Look what I found.”
She passed the papers to Sir Doyle and he read through them, a bewildered smile crossing his lips as he did so. “Where did you get these?” he asked, passing them back to her.
“They were in the frame on my wall.”
“The scripture quotation? But how?”
“She must have hidden them there for safekeeping.”
“I see. Do you realise what they mean?”
She nodded. “I know where I was born. I know when I was born. Best of all, I know who my grandfather was.”
“To think you were part of the Pilkington-Smyth family. It is incredible.”
“From grand house to poor house in a generation. All because my grandfather was a gambler.”
“Oh, little Beth, I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am.”
“As am I,” she replied, climbing onto the bed and planting a kiss on him. “Happier than I have ever been.”
She went to kiss him again and as she did so, he leaned forwards, taking her in his arms. “I love you, little Beth,” he said, staring into her eyes.
“And I you, Sir,” she replied with a grin. “I never want to leave you again.”
He pulled her onto him, lying back on the blankets as he did so. “You never shall.”
And she never did.
