Bottom of the Ninth: Seattle Skookums Baseball (Game On in Seattle Book 6)
Page 27
Epilogue
Zeke lived for baseball in October. He loved the energy and electricity of the playoffs. Sadly, the Skookums missed the wild card by a mere game. But that loss didn’t sting nearly as much as it should’ve. After all, he had Paisley, three kids, and a huge old house to remodel. Side by side, Paisley and he worked to return the grand old lady to her former glory.
Virgil was back in jail awaiting trial for the murder of his wife, along with assault and battery and attempted kidnapping charges. Despite being a slow-as-hell process, the adoption of all three children was moving along. The kids seemed happy and healthy, but Zeke knew better than anyone that they would have their moments.
Paisley and Zeke were married in the backyard with only a handful of their closest family and friends.
Fernando had long ago dumped the fake girlfriend, but he still wasn’t interested in coming out. Uncle Nando and Uncle Mick were regular dinner guests at the house. Paisley and Mick loved to exchange recipes and argue about ingredients while Fernando and Zeke talked baseball.
Hockey and football season had started. Zeke and Paisley attended as many games as they could. Afterward, they’d go out with the brothers and their wives. They weren’t exactly a family yet, but they were working on it.
Zeke’s father had been arrested for the fourteen-year-old murder of Zeke’s mother. Zeke knew he’d be required to testify, but he was prepared to do so, even relieved. The story of the three brothers’ traumatic childhoods made a big splash in the news with multiple offers for movie and book deals. Zeke wasn’t ready for that kind of exposure yet. Neither were Isaac and Tanner.
He preferred to lie low with Paisley, just as they were tonight. The kids were safely tucked into their newly remodeled rooms; Brayden’s was decorated with a baseball theme, Sophie’s with pink princess stuff everywhere, and Sadie’s with ponies and horses galloping across her walls and ceilings.
Zeke had built a fire in the fireplace as a hearty Seattle rain beat against the windows. Paisley leaned her head on his shoulder and sighed happily. Zeke turned his head to kiss her.
“I love you.”
“Of course you do,” she shot back with a sassy smile.
“Yeah, I might be stubborn and slow, but I’m not stupid.”
“No, you’re not. Not at all, and neither am I. I know a good man when I see him, even if I’m covered with water and freezing my ass off.”
“So you knew then?”
“Didn’t you?”
“I think I did.” Zeke’s admission surprised them both.
“You don’t seem like the type who’d believe in love at first sight.”
“I’m not sure I do, but I do believe in forever love, and you’re mine.” He leaned in and gave her another kiss. Not only had he found forever, but he’d found family.
